2003 svr updating looping using windows update/microsoft update

Jason Blake

I am trying to run Windows Update/ microsoft update on a 2003 server SP2
member server with exchange2003 on.
The website wants to install the following activX add-on: 'Windows Update'
from
'Microsoft Windows Component Publisher'

If I try to install the add-on, but I am placed in a loop where I am
continually asked to install the add-on.
IVe tried disabling antivirius etc...
 
Please post your windowsupdate.log file here. (last 30 lines would be
enough).

Jason,

Have you attempted to install this update manually ?
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

Perhaps stopping the Automatic Update service prior to installing the
WUA will get it to install properly.
If no joy, suspect that either the AV or other security software is
preventing the updates installation.
If at all possible, you'll need to COMPLETELY disable the installed AV
temporarily, install the update, and then reenable the AV.

thanks for all your help guys...

I fixed it by opening up microsoft update.
Tools/Manage Addons

in the Addon list currently loaded into IE there was one entry relating to
the wuweb.dll file being
WUWebControl Class. I selected this and hit the update activ X button.

This then updated the wuweb.dll file to the later version and then this
allowed the Updated WU client file to be downloaded and installed as part of
the normal Process update process.
