14.04 on older hardware

Hello to all its been a while since I checked in. I am a long time Ubuntu user but have been traveling in South America for the last 2 years with only a laptop- a Mac- so.

Currently I am living in Quito Ecuador. A friend has a late 2008 IMac that I can probably pick up for $200. It runs the Intel 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 6GB of RAM, the Radeon ATI 2400 HD graphics solution with 128 MB SDRAM.

Was reading over at The Register today about 14.04, see the betas are available and have been itching to get off this laptop for quite some time.

My question is- and I know this is going to be very subjective- how might 14.04 run on such old hardware. Everything here is 30-50% more expensive than in the US. Absent that I would simply build a new machine from scratch. However since future plans are a little vague and since this IMac is all-in one (gee I REALLY would rather build something newer/faster with a single Xeon and 16GB of RAM and.....well you get the idea) it seems like a way to get me back to Ubuntu.

Any comments deeply appreciated.

Regards from Quito
