posted this in the 'mobile computers' thread also but found this section
that might better suit my question so here goes:

I have a problem with my computer in the form of a BSOD stop error msg.
Most of the time on system reboots I get the stop error, but I just keep
restarting and after a few tries the computer will boot up normally.
Here's the 411:

****STOP:0X0000008E (OXC0000005, OX804FF19C, OXF7063468, 0X00000000)

The computer also prompts me with this:

CHECK W/ HARDWARE VENDOR FOR BIOS UPDATES DISABLE BIOS MEMORY OPTIONS
CACHING OR SHADOWING. IF SAFE MODE, REMOVE OR DISABLE COMPONENTS,
RESTART COMPUTER

Any ideas on what is going on? I've googled around and have concurred
that this is a driver problem but I haven't had any luck figuring out
which driver it is or how to get rid of it ! I've tried utilizing
a few system restore points that date back further than when the
problem initially started... plus I even went to the extent of backing
up the data on my VAIO to an external hard drive and rebooting the C:
drive through the VAIO system restore option AND after no resolution,
executing an entire restoration of the windows XP system via backup
restore disks... still to no luck I am continually receiving the BSOD
message. fyi I am running on Win XP version SP2. Please help! Thanks!

you like

to that folder.%systemroot% is normally c:\windows. They are numbered by
date. You can paste that address in address bar to get there.
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed
(zipped) Folder.
4 > Upload the Minidumps to any free web hosting and give us the link

Background information on Stop Error message 8E
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms794023.aspx

http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm
With the last link look at the general advice as the Knowledge Base
references can often refer to problems fixed by later updates.

Have you made any recent hardware changes? How many RAM sticks make up
your installed memory?

Have you backed up important data files? This needs to be done before
you start trying to fix the problem. Do you have access to a second
computer where you might be able to install the drive from the problem
computer as a second slave drive?

What is the computer make and model?

What precisely is your system CD?

If booting is a problem disconnect all hardware, except keyboard, mouse
and monitor, and then try to boot into safe mode.

i am running windows xp sp2 on a sony vaio vgn-n110g notebook. the
system cd I am referring to is actually TWO reboot cds that I had made
from the recovery partition of the hard drive for recovery/backup
purposes. i havent made any kind of hardware changes or changed out my
ram. but I do remember using the poweriso program and using that
program to set up a virtual drive on my computer for program "mounting"
purposes. that's really all i can think of.. let me know what's up!
