As described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980399 I have exactly this problem:
If I ever dial a L2TP VPN connection and disconnect the computer will crash on attempting to go to standby/sleep or hibernate.
There will be no crashdump written. However, if I deactivate the network connection before going into sleep I may get a crashdump.
WinDBG shows rasl2tp.sys as the culprit.
I tried to install the provided Hotfix Fix304233 but it does not install. On further investigation it appears this fix is included in SP1 which I have installed. Nice to have me searching another 10min for the cause of the apparent Hotfix-installation error. Rather than telling me this fix is already installed or included in SP1.
Anyway, the exact problem persists. Any ideas or workarounds or maybe a Hotfix that actually fixes the issue and can be installed?
Thanks a lot for real help!

- Consider the following scenario:
You have a client computer is running Windows 7
You use a Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) over IPsec tunnel to initialize a virtual private network (VPN) connection to a corporate network from the client computer.
You disconnect the VPN connection.
You put the client computer into Hibernate or Standby mode.
In this scenario, the computer takes several minutes when it tries to enter Hibernate mode. Then the computer crashes.
