  1. You are a star! That is exactly the kind of thing i was looking for! I had a feeling you might know something about that. Cheers again. Chris.
  2. hello folks, sorry its been such a long time visiting. I am doing a project for uni which will mean making a router do some unusual things like talking to other types of network. I need to find a wireless router (speed is irrelevant) which can be reprogrammed. It will need a nice big buffer because i intend to change the way the routing tables are structured and i intend to have a large store and forward memory. My question is, has anyone here ever tried such a thing and if so would they recommend a company which makes routers which may be good for reprogramming? I would prefer to buy a router and change it but if no-one has any ideas, i will try asking belkin or cisco (probably without a reply) and then decide to use a pc as a router. but like i said i think for this project, having something that isnt as expensive as a computer and not too much more expensive than a normal wireless router, would be ideal. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Chris. PS. I have a belkin 802.11b Access point. Will this be possible. I know its a really odd subject but if anyone at all has any comments...
  3. Ok i think i had best explain a little better what it is i have done. First of all, i dislike xp immensly (one big version of ms clippy from office!!) anyway lol, The computer normally uses dialup and has worked for ages with it. I connected it to my lan with net access. i checked all tcp/ip settings using the normal properties and ipconfig from cmd. it has dhcp enabled and i have tried it by giving it all of the info it needs instead to check. the net card is installed properly, the firewall is disabled and i have checked for silly little things like possible browser problems etc. its not a happy computer! anything else i might have missed?
  4. Hiya, i have been asked to fix a problem with a friends xp machine. The problem is that even tho everything seems to be fine, it wont connect to the internet. It was on dialup but to test it i connected it to my lan The tcp/ip settings are fine, everything appears to be setup correctly but it cant seem to get ip details from the dhcp server. I cant see anything wrong with it at all. This is exactly the reason why i dont use XP!!! Does anyone have any ideas or should i just format and reinstall? i would prefer to fix it but unless anyone has had this problem before, i have not other option. Cheers for any comment, please state the obvious because i do forget things now and then. Chris.
  5. I think your right, im not sure the download i got was particularly good, never mind, i downloaded mandrake 10. I am so impressed. People said it would be easy, i didnt realise it would be that easy. Its easier than setting up windows. It comes with everything you couldn need including softwre which can burn DVD's. PDF writing, everything. Its nearly at the stage where we dont need windows any more. Its a nice thought at least.
  6. Thanks for that. I tried using the --fix-broken switch which made it a little better. Seeing as dselect wasnt being too helpful with the dependencies. So i put the bear minimum on with tasksel and went forward. Now i try to start it all up with startx and it cant connect to the X Server. hmm, thinking probably mandrake 10 is worth a little look.
  7. Hi, I decided to have a go at installing debian. All went well apart from when I tried to install KDE onto it. DSelect is just beyond a joke. Its just such a mess! I admit I havent installed linux before but still. So i think I have selected everything for KDE with Dselect but when I go to install, the first odd thing is that it keeps on trying to read past the end of the CDROM so pages of errors come up there. Secondly it displays a list of the dependencies. It says to "Add a solution". How seriously useful... So after my rant (sorry) does anyone have any tips for getting round this? Cheers Chris.
  8. Hello, Just wondering what people thought of the different versions of linux which are available. I plan to install one soon so any thoughts?
  9. didnt think there was. ok, do you know if there is one I can download? The idea of making one doesnt seem too hard but why reinvent the wheel. Cheers.
  10. Sorry, must have missed that post lol. I agree but it normally uninstalls hapily, plus its easier to sort the problems out with netscape than it is to format a drive and install everything from scratch. alternatively, go for opera or something.
  11. Have you tried installing netscape to see what happens?
  12. I have no idea about the program but you can go to symantec.com and download the fix tool which includes the patch to block the port.
  13. Hello peops, I havent built a normal PC in a while and i will be doing it this weekend. I bought all of the parts and found a reasonable motherboard for only 20 quid. I was impressed and thought for that price i might as well. Anyway, I looked at the spec afterwards and looked at the grafix speed (4x) and then at the graphics card speeds of new ones. I dont go in for graphics much and so i dont really know but how much difference do you all think it would make if I stuck an 8x graphics card on a 4x board? Im not a big gamer but some of the people who will be using this computer are so any thoughts will be appreciated. Cheers Chris.
  14. Marvelous. Nice one! There was a few questions I planned to ask so I look forward to it.
  15. Hi folks, just thought i would ask but is there any chance of networking section in the forums?
