What do you think?
I did a major upgrade to the site. I bought a skin and modified a bit to get the look just right. There are still a few tweaks to do to it, but, for the most part it's done. I also redid the frontpage and removed virtuanews and replaced it with vbadvanced homepage. The site is now controlled fully by vbulletin. One set of templates to edit. I added a rss news feed hack and all I have to do now is set up users and feeds to post news. This makes my job easier since everything will be done automatically. Tell me what you think.

How much for this hardware
The last box I built was a Shuttle XPC SB61G2 barebones. It has eveything you listed above except for monitor andvideo card and the processor is a 3.2Ghz@800Mhz. It has one WD 200 Gig HD. Total cost was $859 Add in vid card, extra hd and monitor and it would be about $1400 or more.

XP SP2 Beta Out
It's configurable. If a program tries to access the internet it will prompt you to ask for permissions. It has really come a long way.

It's a bug I introduced when I fixed the counter. It didn't work at all at one time and now it looks like it works too good.

Looking for a new sound card
I'll defer this one to my son. I'm happy with my onboard 5.1 sound. I'm sure he'll have some tips on what to get.

Delayed Write Failure
This very well could be a problem with the motherboard chipset. Does the computer giving you the problem have a Via chipset?

Introduce Yourself
Heathkits. I know them well. Built a few Ham receivers and transmitters in my younger days. Part of the learning experience when I was studying to get my Amatuer Radio and class A licenses. Welcome to the forum.

which motherboard is better
Intel chipsets are better than SIS. Most new motherboards now have gig ethernet builtin so go for that.

Two OSes on one partiton
He is putting them on seperate partitions so won't have a problem with them installing in the same dir.

trying to choose a mother board
The motherboard itself doesn't limit the amount of add on components you can add. Off course you can only add the components if you have the slots, so in that regard I guess the motherboard does limit you some. The power supply is the main factor dictate that. I like the Intel i875 based boards. They can take p4 533Mhz and 800Mhz processors. Most of them have sound builtin and it is quality sound at that. You should go with 800Mhz. In fact I don't think there is a 3.2Ghz 533Mhz processor. The socket for P4s is socket 478. Everything you listed above can be run on the i875.

Two OSes on one partiton
Install 98 first into C or the first partition. Then install XP. XP will take care of adding 98 to the boot loader. You'll have an option at boot to switch from 98 or XP.

Spontaneous rebooting
I see that now in your original post. My mistake for missing that. This could be a heat issue, but, I highly doubt that it is heat related. The old p2s don't get hot. It could be a power issue. Have you upgraded the video card lately? If you did is this when the problem started?

Spontaneous rebooting
Check under Performance. What OS are you using?

Upgrading (Win ME to WinXP pro)
You won't have a problem. XP will install the drivers for the wireless adapter. Worst case is you'll have to go to Linksys site and download the card driver. Shouldn't have to however.

Upgrading (Win ME to WinXP pro)
You shouldn't have a problem. XP has excellent driver support. All your hardware should be recognized and installed correctly.

Spontaneous rebooting
Right click my computer. Select the advanced tab at top. Look for: "Start up system, system failure and debugging information". Click settings and make sure "automaticaly restart" is unchecked. Once you change that setting the next time the box goes down it will give you an error. Once you catch the error post it here. It is more than likely a driver problem.
