  1. Keep XP. Make sure you are using current drivers. The XP drivers for the most part are OK, but, it is always better to install the drivers supplied with the computer. Download the driver cd from Dells site for your model and install them. It should clear up any problems you are having.
  2. Once you create a new raid config the controller will format the drives. I don't know if your controller has hotswap capabilities. If it does you could swap out one drive for the other and the controller will rebuild the array without losing data. Another option, if the controller can do this, is to rebuild the array. No data lost this way either. Removing the current array and creating a new one will mean format and total data loss.
  3. I'm at a loss here. If it tries to boot and then dies it could either be a dying or dead HD, cdrom or the XP cd is bad. I would tend to think it is a bad XP cd. Try going into the bios and see if the hd and cdrom are there. If they are then try another XP cd. To ask the obvious, is your battery fully charged or running on ac power?
  4. Can you get into XP? If you can use system restore to restore the files.
  5. You might want to try reseating it in the slot. Sometimes they need an extra push to get them to seat properly.
  6. You could use MaxBlast available at Maxtors site or the format tool available at Western Digital to do a low level format of the disk before you install XP. That way XP would see the disk as being completely empty and you'd be able to create as many partitions as you need.
  7. I think I'll try that. I don't like having a box sitting in dmz.
  8. Are you booting from the XP cd to do the install? There is an option to remove the partitions. When you get to the partition screen you highlight the partition and select delete. It will ask you to confirm and after you confirm it the partition will show one big unformatted partitions. Create the partition and after you do you should see 2 partitions. One 8 megs in size and the other the size of the rest of the disk. Hit enter to install. The next step will instruct you to format the disk. Select quick format (ntfs). Once the format is done you''ll get a screen saying Windows Install will reboot your computer in 15 seconds. Hit enter to reboot right away. On reboot the OS will install.
  9. Give a little more info on the system and we might be able to help.
  10. I just got this error. I'm setting up file sharing between my wifes box and mine so That I can grab pictures of my new grandson. I have workgroup set the same and folders to be shared have correct permissions. She had NIS and Zone Alarm Pro installed. I shut them down and got the error again. I went into my wireless router config and set her box in DMZ and I was able to access the files and from her box could access my shares. My problem had to do with something in the router. I can't check if this related to being hooked up wireless since I don't have any way to run a cable from her box to the router to hardwire it. Are you by chance using a wireless router?
  11. When installing XP from CD there is an option to delete partitions. If you don't use the option to format the disk you will end up with what you have. 2 instances of the OS. Start the install again and this time let Windows format the disk before install to remove the other 2 installs.
  12. I've see that error on my wifes Dell when trying to view shared files. It turned out that the Dell had the workgroup game set as DELLHOME or something like that.
  13. Try this: Open cmd.exe type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew Try the connection again. If it still doesn't work try ipconfig /all and post the results.
  14. Re: lsass.exe - Unable to Locate Component That file is is hit by a couple virus. You can try booting from the XP CD and go into the recovery console and then use the extract command to place a fresh copy of lsass.exe into c:\windows\system32. This will replace the current file and if it is infected with a virus will fix the problem. If that doesn't work then about the only thing you could do is reformat and fresh install.
  15. Could be a bad cd drive. I've had the same error beofre a cd drive went completely bad.
  16. It could be bad ram or graphics card. Try to boot it with a different stick of ram. If that don't work try another graphics card. If you have another P4 board or have a friend that has one you can use to test then put the cpu in and see if it works. Also put another cpu in your board and see if it works.
  17. Best way to do would be to connect it as slave on a Win2K system and copy files over the master drive. You could then format the drive and copy the files back, hook back up in new system and everything should be fine.
  18. Just remove all the files or format the hard drive.
  19. Go in to bios advanced settings and look for an option to power off on system stop.
  20. Linksys WRT54G uses open source firmware so you would be able to modify the source to do anything you want. It is the only wireless router that I know of that is open source.
  21. Windows FTP doesn't handle passv mode very well. If you sre trying to send files trough a firewalled box with only port 21 open then you might have problems. Better to use an ftp client rather than built in ftp of XP.
  22. Make sure the vid car is properly seated. Make sure cpu and memory is properly seated and are not dead. Put in one stick of ram and vid card and try to boot. Once it successfully boots add the other periphs.
  23. With XP you can copy files to a cd without any burning software. XP uses a modified version of InCD. The procedure is the same as copying files from hd to hd. As far as editing them from cd you would have to use a rewritable disk. I do this often. I frequently copy my documents and program folder to cd. If I ever have to format and re-install XP I can copy my stuff back and rerun the programs setup. This lets me keep my settings in each program and lets me keep all documents.
