  1. I use it. Find it a bit annoying, but, it does simplify things.
  2. Welcome to you triggs.
  3. Am I correct in assuming you want to boot msdos from the USB drive?
  4. I would run one of the online virus scanners. Sounds like you are infected with something.
  5. Have you tried another known working keyboard? Maybe the mouse port on the motherboard is bad. Could have a couple loose solder points.
  6. In a word, yes. Unless the card you're using has an audio channel which I doubt it does.
  7. That is error is almost always caused by a driver conflict. Have you installed or uninstalled any drivers for any devices lately?
  8. This might help. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297185
  9. Did you make sure the keyboard is fully plugged in and if it is are you sure the motherboard connection works?
  10. Start > Administrative Tools > Computer Management. In the left column expnad storage and select disk management. You'll be able to activate and assign drive letters to the drive and then it will be available to use.
  11. Open a command box and run these 2 commands. regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll regsvr32 dfrgui.dll If you still have problems then reinstall the disk defrag software. To do that go to C:\WINDOWS\INF directory, right click the DFRG.INF file and select INSTALL.
  12. You can try this. Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery : Settings > uncheck Automatically Restart. Reboot. You should get a Blue Screen stop error with a code like this STOP 0x0000007F and a driver name. If the disk is causing the problem which it looks like from the error you may have a bad sector or corruption. If it is the in the file system then you can run chkdsk from command box, reinstall the drivers or use disk utilty software to try and fix it. If that don't work then a new disk might be needed. Do a search here. There was someone having a similiar problem and it turned out to be a driver problem.
  13. Windows will install the drivers needed. Once you get the install done and updated you can download any of the new drivers. Formating a drive will clean everything.
  14. Make sure the box is set to boot from cdrom. Put the XP cd in the drive and reboot. You'll get a message to hit any key to boot from cd. Hit spacebar and the Windows installer will start. Once you agree to the EULA you'll get to a screen that will ask where you want to install. You'll see your current install. Select that partition and after it is selected choose format. It is important at this step to format the partition otherwise you'll get a second install of the OS. At this step I always delete any existing partitions and then create a new one and format it. That way I am sure no remants of the old OS are left. After the partition is formatted then continue on with the install. Once it's done you'll have a clean OS and you can install your apps. First thing after install you should update at Windows Update and then install your apps. You'll have no problems doing this and once the box is running you'll notice improved response and it will be much faster.
  15. Download The cleaner from http://www.moosoft.com/products/cleaner/download/ and see if it detects and cleans it. You can also try this link http://www.spyware-removal-guideline.com/spyfalcon-removal
  16. Assign a DNS server to the tcp/ip properties and you should be good. You can use 4.1.1.1 or 4.1.1.2.
  17. If you know what kind of soundcard it is you can download drivers for it. Check device manager and see if there are any unrecognized devices.
  18. Sounds like it might be dead or might have a bad power cord. Send it in and they should send you a replacement. Maxtor warranty is 3 years I think.
  19. I don't understand why you have to throw it out. Install a clean copy of XP or win98 or Win 2000. You can move disks from one box to another. Most of the time with OS still installed if you prepped it before hand. Removed the devices before you shutdown the old box. If you can't get an OS to install fresh then it is possible the disk is bad. Put another disk in and install. If I understand you the computer boots past bios, but, doesn't boot to oS because the disk and OS was installed on another box. This does happen. Wipe the drive and start fresh. If you want to throw away that box then I'll give you my address and send you shipping cost and you can ship it to me.
  20. Windows 98 is very picky when it comes to USB support. If you install the wrong driver, which is what it looks like happened, you'll be in blue screen hell. The only thing I can think of is to boot to dos prompt and remove the driver.
  21. Make sure that bios is set to boot from the the hard drive. The boot order should be, cdrom > hd > floppy. Also make sure that the drive is seen by the bios. I doubt that your bios is infected by a virus. The last virus to do that was Chernoble aka win95.cih and even it only infected older motherboards. I mean older at the time the virus was released to the wild which was in 1996 or so. As far as I know the only way to boot from floppy with a virus scanner is if you created the floppies on the system you want to scan.
  22. Is the usb device unplugged or is it still plugged in? Sorry, by OS I mean operating system. If the device is plugged in try unplugging it and then booting up. If it isn't plgged in try booting with it plugged in. If neither option works then disable USB support in the bios. Hit the delete key to get into bios during reboot.
  23. They are supposed to sit dead center on the core. I take it off and put it on the right way.
  24. I would suggest you boot in safe mode and remove the driver for the usb stick. What OS are you running?
