  1. Posted on Less than an hour later, I and the rest of the world learned about Microsoft’s new tablet computer. It looks amazing. If Apple made a device with these specs and features, I’d be vibrating with excitement.[/b] – ANDY IHNATKO, Chicago Sun Times Here it is, Microsoft Surface, the all new, Microsoft-made tablet. We just had our hands on the sleek new device, and we must say — it does feel incredibly well designed. – JOSHUA TOPOLSKY, The Verge Microsoft just pulled off a showy, big-time event…That’s a hell of an achievement, and even more impressively, that hardware looks good. Really good. But, things aren’t perfect. – TIM STEVENSs, Engadget Microsoft should be applauded for making many big bets with Windows 8. The Surface tablet is just the latest of these bets. And it’s certainly pretty to look at. – PAUL THURROTT, WinSuperSite Microsoft’s new Surface tablets are exquisitely engineered, and no one can accuse them of being me-too products. Yesterday’s launch was impressive, but it also left many questions unanswered. – ED BOTT, ZDNet Microsoft’s introduction of its Surface tablet engendered buzz like no other we’ve seen from Microsoft. The big question is, does it stand up to the hype? The answer, succinctly, is yes. – MELISSA J. PERENSON, PCWorld Microsoft has done the best job that I have seen to date to combine a tablet and a laptop into a hybrid. Hybrids traditionally have a checkered history. – NIGAM ARORA, Forbes First and foremost, the new Surface tablet, which was announced Monday in Los Angeles, is clearly designed for the creator in mind. – NICK BILTON, New York Times Obviously, I’ve had to pick out some quotes from each of these writers and bloggers to generally sum up their impressions of the device. The main theme I came across is that Microsoft has possibly something great on their hands. However, price, availability and the impact on their partners remains to be seen, so a final verdict will have to wait. If I update my system to 16 gig of ddr3 ram instead of the 6 gig that is installed does this mean that my system will speed up accordingly? View the thread
  5. hi, i have windows home basic and have started having a problem getting my updates [ error code 641 ] there were 7 now there are 9 that i cant get to download . i have been in contact with microsoft and have bunches of solutions but nothing has worked . i see that a lot of people are having the same problem and they have tried the same things i have tried to no advail . i searched thru all of my updates and found on 9-19-09 it tried to download the service pack 2 and it was cancelled so i tried to reinstall and it tells me it is already installed . i have tried fix it several times and it says the problem has been corrected, when i check on windows installer it says it is not installed correctly but when i try to reinstall it says i have corrupt files and cant install . in april this year i did get system machanic and i have read that this could be causing part of the problem so i talked to them and they tried to fix the problem and couldnt they say it has something to do with the service pack 2 not being installed , i am really not so concerned as to whose fault it is as i am getting it fixed. as i said i have tried everything microsoft has sent and nothing has worked i am not sure where to go or what to do next --- please help !!!!! thanks judy View this thread

  8. Posted on Surface for Windows RT[/b] and Surface for Windows 8 Pro. So what’s the difference between these two tablets? Well on the outside they look pretty much identical, except that Surface for Windows 8 Pro is slightly thicker and heavier. But it’s on the inside where these tablets differ. This is most likely because they are still working on the finalising the exact specifications of the tablets but also because Microsoft are looking to focus more on the users experience rather than on pure specifications. Of course it’s in Microsoft’s interest to have these tablets running as smooth as possible since they want to showcase Windows 8 more so than anything else. Throughout the conference Microsoft stressed that the focus was on Windows 8 experience here and not the actual hardware it’s running on. It’s worth nothing that the Windows RT based tablet is noticeable slimmer and lighter than the Windows 8 Pro version. I’m assuming that’s because of the increased battery size needed to cope with the increased processor power and drain from the Full HD display as opposed to the standard HD display on the RT tablet. Microsoft also haven’t made any of these tablets available for pre-order as of yet. They can’t really without giving us full specifications, but they might also be trying to keep their OEM partners somewhat satisfied by not trying to blow their products out of the water with a full blown marketing and sales campaign…just yet. Overall, Microsoft have had a pretty good go at making some great devices here, and early hands on seem to agree. What do you think of Microsoft’s Surface Tablets? 10. Posted on A New Road to Manufacturing[/b] Microsoft has stayed away from PC manufacturing. It was content to design software, and let PC manufacturers look at the hardware business as their own. Not any more. Manufacturing a tablet represents a departure from Microsoft’s successful strategy in the PC market. Now, with PC design in its track, Microsoft will have to deal with other companies, such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo and Acer, that licensed the Windows operating system and other software applications. The more hands-on approach may upset some. But it doesn’t look like they can do much about that. Will this plan work? Well nothing is guaranteed. Microsoft did try with other devices. Microsoft made its own music player, the Zune, and a line of phones, the Kin. In both cases, it produced these products after hardware partners had failed to produce competitive products with Microsoft’s software. But neither succeeded. The Xbox, on the other hand has been a big success. You hook up the Xbox to a TV to play video games. So will the Surface succeed beyond more than just lying on the surface. We should know in a few months. I now have a program that will only install & run on W7(32bit) but not on W7(64bit). For more than this reason, I want to downgrade to W7(32bit) and keep XPMode as it is. (I.e. I do not want to reinstall all my XPMode apps.) How can I do this? Cheers, Ross. View the thread

Can anyone help identify my problem. When I use the quotation and apostrophy characters it is transposed to some illegible characters - for instance here I have typed quotation marks before and after the word quote i.e. “quote I have typed the apostrophe s after Jean i.e. Jean’s. Also when I go into the body of the e-mail and use the delete key to correct this problem it deletes the entire e-mail without putting it into the deleted folder or the recycle bin, I just lost a 4 page e-mail when trying to fix a tiny error. 23. is that upgrade to vista home premium still available ? is it worth it ? how much would it cost ?or should i go to windows 7 and just deal with the incompatible programs ?or just forget it and leave it as it is till i can afford a new one ?* i just did a full factory restore, which helped. but when i re-installed the operating system, it would not let me put it in the same primary spot on C drive ?i had to put it in a secondary partition and it saved a lot of old stuff and labeled it "windows old" ?i don't understand why it did that. is there something in the old system files that i need ?cause the whole purpose of the restore was to get rid of all that. now i basically have 2 copies taking up room.because it saved so much of the old system files, there wasn't enough room in the primary spot.do you think i can manually delete the "windows old" copy from C drive without doing any harm to computer ?i did go in and remove all the pics and docs & downloads that it saved, that i didn't want, with no negative aftereffects.but it's still got a lot of system/program files i'm afraid to remove.i shouldn't need them...right ?all i need should be there from the re-installed operating system i just did ???HELP ?Marc Zanyk View this thread
