Once you’ve selected the picture that you want to use you can now start drawing your pattern. Windows 8 will require you to enter in your pattern twice to learn it. Your password must have 3 gestures in it. You can choose a combination of drawing shapes, lines or tapping the screen. It does matter what order and direction these gestures are performed in so be sure that you remember it. However if you do forget it, you’ll always have a back up option to log in by entering your password. You can see a sample gesture that I drew below [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/24/set-picture-password-windows-8re/sshot-7/" rel="attachment wp-att-94755">http://cdn7.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/sshot-7-650x412.png?9d7bd4 7. 3. Asking this question is almost embarrassing for me, but I forgot something that should be obvious to me. I had to reinstall Windows 7 so Explorer (My Documents for example) does not have the Tools/Folder Options drop down menu. I want to show file extensions, plus use Tools/Folder Options for other purposes as well. Ok, you most likely already have guessed my question....where is it? When I open My Documents or My Computer the options available are: My Documents show the following available options: Organize Include in library Share with Burn New folder My Computer has: Organize System properties Unintstall or change a program Map network drive Open Control Panel And if I doubleclick C:: Organize Include in library Share with Burn New folder I am running generic Microsoft Windows 7 Professional and NOT an OEM copy. The OS installed was purchased from the Microsoft Company Store generic MS. Someone please refresh my memory. Thanks, EB View the thread
  4. How do I get the "safely remove hardware" icon to stop making it's sounds? It makes the bonk sound that tells you can remove your device. It slows down the PC games and is just plain annoying. I used the Troubleshooter, and checked all the USB options that were listed under my "device drivers" and the message I get says they are enabled and working properly. When it makes its tone, the icon in the tray disappears and then reappears. It doesn't seem to be doing any damage or impacting anything else except the PC games that we play on our computer. Any help is greatly appreciated. View this thread
  5. My laptop stopped working recently when I had to finish a project, so after a visit to a repair people (off-warranty, told me motherboard burned out) I promptly bought another machine. In my country (Latvia) it's almost impossible to buy pre-installed windows OS, so they just sell OEM box together with the computer. On my old machine I had Windows 7 OEM 32-bit, bought together with a laptop. The technician had refused to give me back the sticker with the key, saying he'll sell it to someone else! My questions are: 1) If in this case license key can be re-used for another computer (being OEM and all), I'd like to recover it to use on my old desktop that is running XP now (I've bought another version of Win7 for my new laptop) 2) Regardless of the answer to 1, how can I block my key so that **** can't sell it? I have purchase documents complete with receipt, box, installation disc - everything except the sticker. I've bought my Windows OEM in retail store, so there is no e-mail containing the key. I have a hard drive from that computer though, with Windows still installed. Best regards, Pavels P.S. Who had the bright idea of writing activation key on the case of computer - in our country it gets stolen the moment someone sees it. View the thread

  12. It appears that I have a virus but Norton techs (after 6 hours) say that what I am experiencing is not a virus and that I should ask Microsoft what is happening: Beginning 3 days ago, each time I open a Folder, close that Folder and then reopen it, a small blue image is placed on the file symbol. The image is in the lower left corner of the file symbol (such as the Word “W” or the Excel “E”) and covers approximately 25% in the symbol. What is causing this to happen? Is this a virus? 17. Original title: Sudden poor sound quality. Hello, Well, I am not a computer wiz, so sorry if this is poorly formulated.... Long story short, from one day to the other one, the sound quality on my laptop is coming in very poor quality (can barely understand). The strange thing is that it is only happening for sounds coming from the internet (i.e, Youtube, CNBC... etc), the sound quality is just fine when playing music from DVD or music CD. I also tested the speakers in the troubleshooting and you can record your voice and play it back and again comes just fine. So again, only from sounds streamed from the internet? Thanks again for your help. Glen View this thread
  18. Dell Dimension E310. Windows XP. "Media Center". 5 years old. Originally, part of a 'network' situation for a local restaurant. I purchased one of the machines. I was online when I saw unsolicited 'request' come across my screen for remote assistance". At bottom of screen, next to clock, I could see that someone was downloading a file (game related). "Accelerator" is all I remember. Called my internet provider. They do not deal with Virtual Private Networks. They tell me it looks like there is more than one device connected to my computer. I discovered that a Network Interface Card is installed on my machine. Direct Quote: "Integrated "NIC" needed only when booting to server. You do not need a "NIC" if booting to OS on hard disk." Accessed "Computer Management" and deleted all except myself as User and the Administrator. However, I must have done that too late. Other party managed to become something called an "NT AuthorityAuthenticated User" and an "AuthorityInteractive". Other party downloaded something called "Intel Pro 100 Network Connection" file. I lost my user credentials and computer was "locked" to my requests and would not recognize my password. My disk was formatted yesterday and new Windows installed. I lost all my personal files. My computer working again. I was told that the person who has "taken over" my computer still "owns" it even tho I may format my disk and start over multiple times! Is this true? Does he still have 'access'. And what can I do about it? Thank you very much for a response. My technical knowledge is very limited. View this thread
  19. Posted on What is the Cloud’s effect on software? [/b] Well many survey participants believe that the Cloud is Changing Software. [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/23/cloud-effect-business/thecloudischangingsoftware/" rel="attachment wp-att-94728">http://cdn8.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/TheCloudIsChangingSoftware-400x268.jpg?9d7bd4 The Cloud Drivers There are a variety of features that are making the cloud a SaaS choice. Scalability, business agility, costs, mobility, and competitive advantage are just some of the items that are driving the growth of the cloud. [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/23/cloud-effect-business/clouddrivers/" rel="attachment wp-att-94729">http://cdn8.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/CloudDrivers-400x253.jpg?9d7bd4 How many business plan on deploying SaaS applications? [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/23/cloud-effect-business/saas-deployment/" rel="attachment wp-att-94731">http://cdn6.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/SaaS-Deployment.jpg?9d7bd4 From the results, there are plenty companies that work with Cloud services already, and more are planning to deploy. What is interesting is the 19%, because it says more about their own business structure where they don’t feel that computers or networking are making an impact. Where they will be in a year from now is critical, because it is estimated that 84% of new software will be SaaS. And 75% of the software built by 2017 will be PaaS. The Hybrid Cloud will be growing where in five years it will be significant. The hybrid will be a combination of private cloud and public cloud operations. [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/23/cloud-effect-business/hybridcloud/" rel="attachment wp-att-94734">http://cdn7.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/HybridCloud-400x242.jpg?9d7bd4 At this time then, what is keeping business from adopting the cloud? Two things. Complexity and Pricing. Either the businesses don’t have the technical staff to adopt the cloud, or the pricing may be higher than they expect or can afford. Some businesses see a lack of transparency in the operations as holding them back. The standards for operations may not be clear, and a there is the perception of a lack of integration tying the base technology with the Cloud technology. [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/23/cloud-effect-business/inhibition/" rel="attachment wp-att-94739">http://cdn6.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Inhibition-400x275.jpg?9d7bd4 The results of the survey tend to support the main points of cloud computing. It will continue to grow and software will change significantly in the future because of it. Right now there are multiple reasons that are keeping more business from adding to the Cloud base. But as more companies integrate their services, those reasons will fall by the way side. After all, not every business believed that the internet would be important. 23. Don't know if this specific question has been asked before on this forum site. There appears to be similar questions regarding Websites and Intranet on WHS. I have a WHS server, with WHIIST already installed on it. This WHS server has remote access configured and remote access is working fine. Now, there isn't a lot of documentation on WHIIST other than installing it and basically minor configuration. Also, there isn't a lot of documentation or articles on building a Webserver on WHS. At least in my searches, I could not come up with good information. Question: I would like to create/maintain an Intranet site on my WHS. How do I do this task? My intentions are to have webpages (HTM/HTML) and PDF's on my Intranet site for viewing purposes ONLY. Any thoughts or documentation would be helpful. View this thread
  24. Posted on [*]On-demand self-service, [*]measured service, [*]broad network access, [*]resource pooling, [*]elasticity or network access While working with these you can see that virtualization and solid WAN engineering will provide three supporting features: broad network access, resource pooling, and elasticity. However, on-demand self-service and measured service are not part of standard virtualization management suites. For these, automation is required. [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/22/cloud-automation/cloudtypes/" rel="attachment wp-att-94720">http://cdn10.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/cloudtypes.bmp?9d7bd4 So how does automation service work? At this time, the results are not that well designed. Looking at different cloud services, at the most basic level, cloud automation packages take preprogrammed actions when a trigger event occurs. But preprogrammed event operations are just the beginning. In addition, what needs to happen is that new products with enhanced innovation need to take management to a new level by enabling policy-based automation. These products use multiple management engines to stay in touch with all aspects of the infrastructure and make policy decisions based on specific scenarios and self-service requests. So when a user-customer makes a request for an operation to take place, the request is acknowledged and acted on. [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/22/cloud-automation/cloud-computing/" rel="attachment wp-att-94719">http://cdn10.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/cloud-computing-400x265.jpg?9d7bd4 But this brings up another aspect of automation that can’t be avoided. One must maximize the software components for efficiency. Because if demand spikes jeopardize the performance of mission-critical business services by starving application servers, that can be a problem. So the system must segregate workloads into resource pools and assign priorities to them–as self-service requests come in, critical servers must be given priority access to underlying physical resources. How do you select an automation management system? Look for the ability to manage resource loads in cloud environments. It must be fast and reliable. In the end, the automation operations can only benefit the user-customer, because it will be seen as a fast way to work with a system that must be solid and reliable.
