  2. Posted on An Opening?[/b] So does this portend an opening in the desktop operating system world? Is this a possible opening for Linux? How, well if the partners are unhappy with Microsoft, will they be able to design their own PC’s to put a new operating system, Linux style. So which Linux software can be considered at this time if a company did want to make the break? Ubuntu and Google Chrome. Ubuntu Ubuntu, not only has been courting OEMs for a long time, it’s actually been shipping [url=http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/dell-readies-ubuntu-linux-laptop-for-developers/10958">Ubuntu-powered laptops and desktops from companies like Dell for years. Red Hat and SUSE, are more server oriented, than desktop. They will have a smaller desktop impact. So you have an existing powerhouse already working with Linux. How much harder is it to stretch it to the PC, or the laptop? But there is one drawback here, that is that Chrome needs to connect to the Internet in order to run. So if there will be a PC — Chrome Linux OS it will have to be available in a non-Internet mode. Because Windows 8 can be a new dimension in PC operating systems, where consumers don’t want to go. 3. Hello folks, I bought Acer machine in early days of Windows 7. It came with pre-installed 64-bit Home Premium edition. Until now, I had no issues whatsoever when about 3 months ago, it gave me this error for the first time that my copy of Windows is not Genuine. I searched up on the internet and reactivated windows using following directions. ** 1) Click Start button. 2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field 3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator 4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes) Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok. 5) Type: cd %windir%ServiceProfilesNetworkServiceAppDataRoamingMicrosoftSoftwareProtectionPlatform 6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar 7) Type: cd %windir%system32 8) Type: net start sppsvc 9) Type: slui.exe 10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. Reactivate your copy of Windows. ** Problem solved. It appeared again yesterday and since then working on the computer has become a ****. These pop-up windows and MS security essential warning is driving me nuts. The previous trick of reactivation did not work. Pasting here MGA Diagnosis Report. Will be glad if anyone can help me solving this problem. To note, I have already checked tons of posts on the internet with the same problem and ended up with no results, so please do not paste a 'call center' answer. Many thanks in advance. ***** Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0): ----------------------------------------- Windows Validation Data-- Validation Code: 50 Cached Online Validation Code: 0x0 Windows Product Key: Removed Windows Product Key Hash: Removed Windows Product ID: 00359-OEM- Removed -00006 Windows Product ID Type: 2 Windows License Type: OEM SLP Windows OS version: 6.1.7601.2.00010300.1.0.003 ID: {371ADE82-0BFB-4B2D- Removed -6D8A0DE26F56}(1) Is Admin: Yes TestCab: 0x0 LegitcheckControl ActiveX: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Product Name: Windows 7 Home Premium Architecture: 0x00000009 Build lab: 7601.win7sp1_gdr.120503-2030 TTS Error: Validation Diagnostic: Resolution Status: N/A Vista WgaER Data-- ThreatID(s): N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Windows XP Notifications Data-- Cached Result: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 File Exists: No Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 WgaTray.exe Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 WgaLogon.dll Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGA Notifications Data-- Cached Result: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGAExec.exe Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGAAddin.dll Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGA Data-- Office Status: 100 Genuine Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 - 100 Genuine OGA Version: N/A, 0x80070002 Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Office Diagnostics: B4D0AA8B-604-645_025D1FF3-364-80041010_025D1FF3-229-80041010_025D1FF3-230-1_025D1FF3-517-80040154_025D1FF3-237-80040154_025D1FF3-238-2_025D1FF3-244-80070002_025D1FF3-258-3_E2AD56EA-765-d003_E2AD56EA-766-0_E2AD56EA-134-80004005 Browser Data-- Proxy settings: N/A User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible MSIE 8.0 Win32) Default Browser: C:UsersUserAppDataLocalGoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe Download signed ActiveX controls: Prompt Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disabled Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Allowed Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disabled Allow scripting of Internet Explorer Webbrowser control: Disabled Active scripting: Allowed Script ActiveX controls marked as safe for scripting: Allowed File Scan Data-- Other data-- Office Details: GenuineResultsMachineDataUGUID{371ADE82-0BFB-4B2D-9648-6D8A0DE26F56}/UGUIDVersion1.9.0027.0/VersionOS6.1.7601.2.00010300.1.0.003/OSArchitecturex64/ArchitecturePKey*****-*****-*****-*****-7QJB7/PKeyPID00359-OEM-8992687-00006/PIDPIDType2/PIDTypeSIDS-1-5-21-3046942826-2376710390-198022040/SIDSYSTEMManufacturerAcer /ManufacturerModelAspire 5740 /Model/SYSTEMBIOSManufacturerPhoenix Technologies LTD/ManufacturerVersionV1.09 /VersionSMBIOSVersion major="2" minor="6"/Date20091126000000.000000+000/Date/BIOSHWID82CC3107018400FC/HWIDUserLCID0409/UserLCIDSystemLCID0409/SystemLCIDTimeZoneEastern Standard Time(GMT-05:00)/TimeZoneiJoin0/iJoinSBIDstat3/statmsppid/msppidname/namemodel/model/SBIDOEMOEMIDACRSYS/OEMIDOEMTableIDACRPRDCT/OEMTableID/OEMGANotification//MachineDataSoftwareOfficeResult100/ResultProductsProduct GUID="{91120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}"LegitResult100/LegitResultNameMicrosoft Office Enterprise 2007/NameVer12/VerVal87B94227EEE56D4/ValHashQbPFQWQQgufOz+a+2CtfnVAOP3g=/HashPid81599-874-5519636-65091/PidPidType1/PidType/Product/ProductsApplicationsApp Id="15" Version="12" Result="100"/App Id="16" Version="12" Result="100"/App Id="18" Version="12" Result="100"/App Id="19" Version="12" Result="100"/App Id="1A" Version="12" Result="100"/App Id="1B" Version="12" Result="100"/App Id="44" Version="12" Result="100"/App Id="A1" Version="12" Result="100"/App Id="BA" Version="12" Result="100"//Applications/Office/Software/GenuineResults Spsys.log Content: 0x80070002 Licensing Data-- Software licensing service version: 6.1.7601.17514 Name: Windows® 7, HomePremium edition Description: Windows Operating System - Windows® 7, OEM_SLP channel Activation ID: d2c04e90-c3dd-4260-b0f3-f845f5d27d64 Application ID: 55c92734-d682-4d71-983e-d6ec3f16059f Extended PID: 00359-00178-926-800006-02-1033-7601.0000-1452012 Installation ID: 015434794825936824618221408625937242908543003933287063 Processor Certificate URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88338 Machine Certificate URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88339 Use License URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88341 Product Key Certificate URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88340 Partial Product Key: 7QJB7 License Status: Notification Notification Reason: 0xC004F063. 7. I simply do not understand it, I don't recall anything similar happening with Windows XP. It happens when I open my National Geographic Program with a CD and today it happened when I added the gadget that I plug in to my computer to back up my files with. I think that is called a 'drive' although it stays still and doesn't travel anywhere or appear to have any moving parts and is nothing like the 'drive' in the front of some big houses round here. Why use all this geeky language, when something more conventional must exist and the geek words are so easy to confuse with more established meanings for the same word? View the thread

All I had to do was download Microsoft Security essentials and they would remove the threat. I was forced to download and scan my computer, and they still didn't find any threat. 14. Yesterday Windows 7 stopped responding and I had to restore my system because I don't have a Windows 7 CD with which I might have tried to repair the OS. The restore apparently did more than restore. All of the subfolders in Windows LIie Mail vanished. They're still somewhere, because when I try to recreate them, I'm told a folder by that name already exists. I can't get them to show up using the Expand/Collapse option because it's grayed out. There are no arrows next to the main folders which means I have no access to saved mail. The main folders are just things like Family and Friends. The subfolders are where the mail goes, and when I get new mail, it goes directly to those folders. I can read it in Unread Mail, but I really would like to be able to see my folders again. How do I get them back? Jade View the thread

  16. Installed MSE yesterday and cleaned system. Today I am unable to run Blizzard Launcher for Mists of Pandaria beta. Error msg says MSE might be blocking. How do I change MSE to allow this program to run? I play both Diablo III & Mists of Pandaria (beta) and need all necessary programs to run without interference. I would prefer to not disable my firewall for extended periods of time as this defeats the purpose of having it. I have done all of the suggested steps except disabling my firewall. Exact msg is 'Failed to run a required program (Agent). Wait one minute and try again and if that doesn't work please restart your computer and try again. Please click the link below for more information or contract Customer support if the problem persists.' Error code: BLZPTS00007 links to Blizzard forum Failed to Run a Required Program (Agent) Keywords: failed to run, required program, required, failed, agent, failed to run agent… Failed to run a required program (Agent). This error means the Blizzard support program known as Agent was unable to properly run. As the error message indicates, try waiting one minute, then reattempt. If that fails, restart your computer and start the game again. If a restart does not resolve the issue, follow the troubleshooting steps on the Battle.net Update Agent support article. If the above solutions do not help, submit a ticket and include the full text of any error messages you are receiving and when they occur. Attach your system files to the ticket with a detailed description of the problem you are experiencing, when it happens, and the steps you have tried so far to resolve the issue. From the Battle.net Update Agent article: Blizzard Agent Troubleshooting Keywords:Agent, agent.exe, agent process, agent service,d3 agent, updating setup files… The Battle.net Update Agent is designed to make game launching and patching more efficient, especially if you have multiple Blizzard titles running on your computer. Currently, Agent is required for Diablo III and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, and must run in order for those titles to play properly. Agent should shut itself down ten seconds after closing supported Blizzard games. If the Agent process continues running after you shut down any supported titles, restart your computer. You can also end the process manually in Windows Task Manager. Troubleshooting Anything on your computer that interferes with or shuts down Agent may cause issues, including the inability to install or patch our games that require it. It’s also possible that your network is configured in a way that prevents Agent from operating. Security Software Security software (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm) is designed to protect your computer from perceived threats. Many security programs are not game-friendly and will frequently perceive a game installation or update as a threat and shut it down. Security software is the most common cause behind Agent issues. Disabling or temporarily uninstalling these programs will often allow Agent to install or patch properly. Be advised that some security programs will continue to partially run and block Agent even when they are disabled. If you are not comfortable modifying your security software settings, we recommend contacting the software publisher for assistance. View this thread
  17. I am not sure if MSE was on at the time I may have contracted it. I downloaded MSE today and did a full scan. It found some malware and said it would fix. Seemed to go fine. Is my computer likely to be OK, or do I need to do something else? I read that if you download MSE on an infected computer it will make it worse. Is this true. If so is there something I can do on my own. I have little to no $ to spend. I do have start up discs. Will that work or is there something I can do to save my computer without losing everything. If not, can I save photos safely? They are the main thing I don't want to lose. Also, how do I know if I have it or some other virus? View this thread

  19. I have Windows Vista 7 Home Premium and have noted that for several years ANY update for Silverlight will fail: it will download but not install. I understand that a non Windows vendor installed it, looks like mine done in '05.There is something about part of Silverlight not being digitally signed. My registry of updates shows NOTHING for Silverlight. There is one entry, 'Microsoft Silverlight' in both the Update registry and the Program registry. I cannot uninstall them, even per Microsoft'sIlverlight Home Page about an install and/or uninstall. Been through the web, don't want to spend $ on something I know nothing about. What I was able to to was disable Silverlight at the add on menu under Internet Options.Anyone know how to get rid of anything to do with Silverlight? With thanks...LarryWX. View this thread

Now once you’ve successfully entered your gesture twice, Windows 8 will have learnt it and it’s now been set as your password. Next time you go to log in, you’ll be asked to draw your password. 23. Asking this question is almost embarrassing for me, but I forgot something that should be obvious to me. I had to reinstall Windows 7 so Explorer (My Documents for example) does not have the Tools/Folder Options drop down menu. I want to show file extensions, plus use Tools/Folder Options for other purposes as well. Ok, you most likely already have guessed my question....where is it? When I open My Documents or My Computer the options available are: My Documents show the following available options: Organize Include in library Share with Burn New folder My Computer has: Organize System properties Unintstall or change a program Map network drive Open Control Panel And if I doubleclick C:: Organize Include in library Share with Burn New folder I am running generic Microsoft Windows 7 Professional and NOT an OEM copy. The OS installed was purchased from the Microsoft Company Store generic MS. Someone please refresh my memory. Thanks, EB View the thread
  24. How do I get the "safely remove hardware" icon to stop making it's sounds? It makes the bonk sound that tells you can remove your device. It slows down the PC games and is just plain annoying. I used the Troubleshooter, and checked all the USB options that were listed under my "device drivers" and the message I get says they are enabled and working properly. When it makes its tone, the icon in the tray disappears and then reappears. It doesn't seem to be doing any damage or impacting anything else except the PC games that we play on our computer. Any help is greatly appreciated. View this thread
  25. My laptop stopped working recently when I had to finish a project, so after a visit to a repair people (off-warranty, told me motherboard burned out) I promptly bought another machine. In my country (Latvia) it's almost impossible to buy pre-installed windows OS, so they just sell OEM box together with the computer. On my old machine I had Windows 7 OEM 32-bit, bought together with a laptop. The technician had refused to give me back the sticker with the key, saying he'll sell it to someone else! My questions are: 1) If in this case license key can be re-used for another computer (being OEM and all), I'd like to recover it to use on my old desktop that is running XP now (I've bought another version of Win7 for my new laptop) 2) Regardless of the answer to 1, how can I block my key so that **** can't sell it? I have purchase documents complete with receipt, box, installation disc - everything except the sticker. I've bought my Windows OEM in retail store, so there is no e-mail containing the key. I have a hard drive from that computer though, with Windows still installed. Best regards, Pavels P.S. Who had the bright idea of writing activation key on the case of computer - in our country it gets stolen the moment someone sees it. View the thread
