Windows 8 and Malware Protection
Posted on really[/b] wants to kill you, they will kill you. That said, if someone wants to hack into your computer then … well you know the rest. But, is this true about Windows 8? Is it hack proof? Will it be more difficult for malware to become a vibrant node in the Windows 8 establishment? According to some [url=http://thehackernews.com/2012/06/windows-8-will-be-challenge-for-malware.html">recent [url=http://www.itworld.com/security/282947/5-ways-windows-8-beats-windows-7-security">reports, Windows 8 will have more security features built in, which will make the system less vulnerable. For instance, one difference between Windows 7 and 8 is including more exploit-mitigation technologies. In that regard, two programs, the Windows Heap Manager and Windows Kernel Pool Allocator will make it far harder for attackers to exploit buffer-overflow vulnerabilities. Security Sandbox There will also be a “security sandbox” for applications for Windows 8. This more restrictive security sandbox will contain the new Windows 8 Apps. This is a mechanism to prevent programs from performing disruptive actions. [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/29/windows-8-malware-protection/windows8securityfeatures/" rel="attachment wp-att-94825">http://cdn6.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/windows8securityfeatures-400x184.jpg?9d7bd4 App Container The new App Container provides the operating system with a way to make more fine-grained decisions on what actions certain applications can perform. All apps run with extremely low privileges and have limited access to resources. [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/29/windows-8-malware-protection/win8security/" rel="attachment wp-att-94817">http://cdn7.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/win8security-400x300.png?9d7bd4 Measured Boot There will be a measured boot. In Windows 8, Microsoft will put in a new boot process signature whereby there is a signature of the entire boot process and stored in the TPM chip in order to prevent malware from infecting the system. [url=http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/06/29/windows-8-malware-protection/measuredboot/" rel="attachment wp-att-94823">http://cdn9.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/MeasuredBoot-400x301.jpg?9d7bd4 Windows Defender An update to Windows Defender comes with the Windows 8 system and it is a full-blown anti-malware program. It no longer just tries to fight adware or spyware but it also goes after malware and offering real-time protection. Internet Explorer 10 The new version of IE 10 will be put into Windows 8. All tabs and IE processes are isolated from one another. Something in tab 1 couldn’t tamper with tab 2 or capture any of the data. If they really want to get in then …. When I mark text in a Word document it doesn’t always “stay” long enough for me to copy or cut it. When I try to move a small window it makes it full screen, etc. In addition, when I recently ran the windows update, several updates appeared to work but I received the following error message: Automatic Updates Some updates could not be installed The following updates were not installed: Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (KB2597086) Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB2539581) Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008 x86 (KB2657424) Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008 x86 (KB2604111) Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB2584052) I appreciate any help! uninstalling 32-bit version of Security Essentials on laptop w/64-bit CPU
I have a new laptop and transferred programs and files from my old laptop using PCMover. It transferred everything, even things I told it not to transfer, so now I have a 32-bit version of Security Essentials on my laptop which has a 64-bit CPU. When I try to UNinstall Security Essentials so I can download a compatible version, it identifies Security Essentials as a program I have to delete first. But when I try to uninstall it, I get the following message: "You're trying to run a 32-bit version of the Security Essentials Setup Wizard on a computer that has a 64-bit microprocessor (CPU). To learn how to run the Security Essentials Setup Wizard on a 64-bit computer, click http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials/support?mkt=en-us. Error code: 0x8004FF2E." I find a lot of information about identifying what version I have/need but I can't find anything that tells me how to UNinstall the 32-bit version so I can reinstall the 64-bit version. Any advice as to how I can uninstall my 32-bit version would be appreciated. Thanks. View this thread
