Hi Guys, I have upgraded my Lenovo Desktop Pc from windows 7 Pro to Windows 8 Pro which worked without any issue for couple of days. But it all went wrong after downloading and installing the new updates. I restarted the PC and it got stuck on configuring updates on 13%. I waited for half an hour, PC restarted and stuck again on 13%. To try to troubleshoot the issue. I turned it off and then press shift+F8 and did the system restore from advanced option and it worked. I ran Windows update troubleshooter which showed me that problem has been found but its been fixed and the problem was with "potential windows update database error detected 0*80070490". I checked for the updates again, downloaded and installed them then restarted the machine with a hope that updates will be configured without any issue but encountered the same problem. I am continuously trying to find the solution for it and any help will be appreciated. Thanks View the full article

Hi, I am not very computer literate, so please bear with me. On my old laptop which had Windows XP, I used to be able to have open and could view several pages of the internet (by reducing the size of the pages) at the same time, now that I have Windows 7, I can't seem to have several pages open on the screen at the same time. I have to send messages with hotmail to multiple contacts every week on bbc (hidden mail) but when i use the copy paste system as there are around 30 addresses most of the addresses are repeated 2 or 3 times and nobody wants to receive the same message 3 times !!! I am running Security Essentials. It is detecting Trojan:Win32/Puzlice.A and putting in Quarantine. But it keeps coming back - I think when I use Internjet Explorer and it is indicated by reduced speed. View this thread

After my computer crashed (able to move the mouse, but not change windows or open task manager), I restarted it and checked my security settings, only to find that Windows Defender had turned itself off. On opening Windows Defender, I get the error code 0x8050800d with the message "Some history items could not be displayed. Please wait a few minutes and try again. If that doesn't work, clear the history and try again". I have waited quite some time, tried restarting the computer, and searched the help files (no article on the problem was present), and I can't see a way to clear the history from the Windows Defender menus. When I try to turn the real-time protection on, I get the message "Windows Defender couldn't turn on real-time protection. This operation returned because the timeout period expired" and the error code 0x800705b4. According to the bottom of the Windows Defender window, it did a scan about the time that my computer crashed. I tried what was suggested in the Windows 7 forums (I know that Windows Defender is very different between Windows 7 and 8), starting the Services program, and it says that Windows Defender Service is running, and has an automatic trigger start. I tried restarting the program from there, but to no avail. I do not have any other virus scanners or security software installed, and have only installed windows just over a week ago. Hello. I have essensials, but last weekend I suddenly got a message, filling my screen, and blocking my computer use totally, saying it was from the Metroplitan Police, and that I should pay £100 to release the block!! I did not, and did a restore, and all was well, until yesterday, when it happened again. So now I'm concerned it will return. Why didnt essentials stop this getting to my computer, and what can I do to further protect my computer against this type of thing? I've heard one can set up a type of "watch" program, which "ticks" good websites, and warns of a dodgy one, before one opens it. Any help there too please. Lastly, on the essentials web page, I clicked on "contact" (as I wished to send and email to Microsoft, but it went to a page with lots of weird info on, and said basically, unavailable! I am running Vista Home Premium. I recently asked about Widows Defender and Services to improve the computer's performance. I received a satisfactory answer but decided to "go it alone" and have a look at the System Configuration because my computer (laptop) always sounds very business and is prone to slowing right down when I go on line. I tried disabling some of start up and services which went ok initially but I think I got too carried away and things started going wrong such as being unable to connect with the internet so I had to do a system restore. Where I live doesn't have a strong signal for wireless broadband which is not very helpful but that's why I'm trying to optimise my computer to make the most of what I've got. Which brings me to the question whether I should install the Optimiser, I'm a little wary about downloading such things but need some advice on which services I could disable to give a little more performance strength. I get very confused about on that matter, don't understand the terminology. Can somebody help please? View this thread

I'm using windows mail, vista64, have my tools-options-compose-mail font set to 11 pt. calibri. I'm not using any stationary and sending mail in HTML format. When composing email, my font settings default to 10 pt. calibri. as soon as I click into the compose area (according to the font drop down box above the email body). If I access that drop down box, my options are only 8, 10, 12, 14 pt....etc. How can I compose using the font size I want? Hello. Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I've discovered my system resets my speaker configuration to Stereo rather than 5.1, seemingly at random. I have a Creative X-Fi card and in Windows XP and 7, speaker configuration was always able to be modified within their Volume Panel app. In Windows 8, however, I have to use the Windows Speaker Setup configuration box to change to 5.1.. so I figure Windows 8 is managing the amount of speakers now. It seems to be doing a terrible job at it, though. What could be causing it to forget the setting? My sound card software is not forgetting any of my sound cards settings in the volume panel, but Windows keeps forgetting the number of speakers. What is Windows doing different than it used to? Can this be stopped? It's a pain to have to check and change the setting every time I go to watch a movie or do something with audio. :P View the full article
