Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit SP2 is getting error 80070490 on windows update
I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit SP2. Getting the 80070490 error on Windows update installs. The following solutions recommended by what have been able to find have not worked: I have tried Microsoft Readiness tool several time with no success. I have tried using my Vista system disk with using the UPGRADE option also several time and still no success. The upgrade option is always grayed out. I have done a new INSTALL 2 different times. I then run the Windows Update, over and over with each levels reboot. I always get back to the same level and get the 80070490 error on the following 9 updates: Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB2564958) Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB970430) Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 for x64 (KB2604094) Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB2378111) Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 for x64 (KB2686833) Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB2345886) Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 for x64 (KB2656374) Security Update for Windows Vista for x6 How do I get past this 80070490 error? Dual Monitors - Same Background on Both Monitors ?
I have 2 monitors on my Win8 Enterprise PC. I like to have the same background picture displayed on both screens. It would seem in Windows 8, the default is to have 2 *different* backgrounds displayed on the 2 monitors. That's fine, but how do you get Win8 to use the same background on both monitors, and at the same time use all the backgrounds in your desktop background list (Personalize > Desktop Backgrounds). The only way I can find to have the same background on both displays is to right click *one* of the thumbnails in the desktop backgrounds list, and choose "set for all monitors". However, when you do this, you disable all the other chosen thumbnails, and are stuck with just the one background. Uggg. So how I do I get it back to the old Win7 way? View the full article

Voosk worm
Has anyone had this problem...I opened an email from a friend inviting me to see photographs on his Facebook, and the link took me instead to a site called Voosk, which I stupidly opened, because it then sent the same invitation to everyone in my contacts (who are pretty annoyed). It is still happening (one friend has gotten three "invitations" from me!) I don't know how to email my entire contacts list to warm them not to open further emails. Thanks! View this thread

(Various) Ways to get back the Start Menu/Button in Win8. . .
The following may be of interest to people who either prefer to or have to use the Desktop UI (not the new Metro or Modern UI) in Windows 8 for their work or play whatever the reason, a growing list can be foundhere on the MSFN Forum: And presently, as of Nov. 17, 2012, 6:49 PM AST time, for those who'd prefer to have a quick look, the list contains the following: Tihiy's Windows 7 Explorer for Windows 8 Tihiy's StartIsBack (implements the original Windows 7 Start Menu on Win8) Classic Shell Classic Shell skin featuring Windows 7-look Start Menu Boot directly to desktop Hack Windows 8 Metro How to boot to the desktop in Windows 8 Skip Metro Suite Start8 (now providing a Windows 7-style Start Menu) Spesoft Windows 8 Start Menu Start Menu X related toStart Menu 7 (page providing additional information) Start Button 8 (designed to work with Start Menu X) ViStart andViStart 8 Start Buttons (designed to work with ViStart) Power8 Win8StartButton (new link available in English and German) IObit StartMenu8 Win+X Menu Editor (not exactly a Start Menu, but can be used to easily add functionality to the right-click "Power User" menu) Win8 Charms Gesture + Start to Desktop (bypasses Metro Start Screen, adjusts mouse action for Charms) Wentutu Start Menu (pin frequently used programs to Start Menu boot directly to Desktop) -- but seebug report in this thread Pokki Menu (boot straight to the Desktop and disable the hot corners) Bypass Modern UI boots natively to the Desktop without pausing on the Start Screen BringBack (the Windows Start Menu) by Revel (but see the advisoryhere in item 6) RetroUI provides a Metrofied Start Menu and can bypass the Metro Start Screen, but also provides a Start Button and a taskbar for the Metro screen and allows for running Windows Store apps in a Desktop window ExtremeTech has published a method using the Task Scheduler to automatically bypass the Metro screen and go to the Desktop upon boot StartMenuPlus8 features extensive customization choices, including a "Recent Items" button Boot to Desktop for Windows 8 andStart for Windows 8, both by tech author Steve Sinchak, can work together for a complete button+menu solution (although the menu is Metro-based) HP Quick Start -- a major PC maker gets in the act of reviving the Start Menu 8StartButton (in free and paid versions) StartOnDesktop bypasses the Windows 8 Start Screen Viva Start Menu (includes a custom Start Button) Will Microsoft return the Start Button/Start Menu to the Windows 8 Desktop UI. . . I wonder. regards, Laurence View the full article

Random explorer.exe crash when I'm using Windows 8 Style Apps on SAMSUNG XQ700T
Hi I bought Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro just 2 days ago in S.Korea. Everything looks fine, but the only problem is that when I use several Windows 8 style Apps, "explorer.exe" crashes occur randomly. There are also crashes when I just handle Windows 8 style UI even I don't use Windows 8 style apps, such as just touching some buttons on Charm bar. It does not happen when I use x86 or x64 desktop mode apps. Anyway, So I decided re-installing Windows 8 x64(Samsung OEM version) to Windows 8 Pro x64(TechNet version). After then same problem have been occurring, re-installing wasn't solution of this problem. I'm a system security developer, so I'm using several critical apps that can affect to OS, like Ollydbg, WinDbg, IDA, Process Monitor, Process Hacker and several apps that are related to reverse engineering. I already took a look at if there were suspicious module which can make crash in explorer.exe , but there weren't. And I also tried to test System stability test by using AIDA64 stressing CPU,FPU,RAM and GPU for 20 minutes. But it looks that there is no problem. So my conclusion is that Windows 8 style UI is still unstable. Anyone has same problem? Thanks for reading. ps. UAC is turned ON, Using Windows Live account, ALREADY installed all of latest Windows updates from Nov 18. 2012 s0ne View the full article

This system is supposed to have a built in hidden partition to reload it's factory settings, but my Restoration Wizard will not open (states it cannot find the path). My system works great, but a bit slow on boot up. Like to get this thing back to factory settings, but reload my Microsoft Office 2007, Windows Media Player 11, but I understand you have to backup the licensing keys to, and I do not know how to do this. Upgrading to Windows 8
I have Windows XP Recently, I have been notified by Pogo.com (of which I'm a member) that I need to upgrade to Windows 8 for better service. I ignored this notification and did not initiate any change. However, when I play in Pogo now they show that I have upgraded to Windows 8. I am sure this is going to cost me and I do not want to spend this extra in my computer. Please tell me what I can do about this situation to correct it? View this thread

windows 8 lock screen hangs on samsung 700t slate
I have a Samsung 700t slate that I upgraded to win8 pro. once in a while, i.e. every other day or so the lock screen appears to be hung in that it wont slide up. the computer still seems to be alive as the cursor is visible on the screen when I have a mouse plugged in, the volume slider appears when I adjust the volume, and the autorotate button displays the message when its button is toggled. I haven't tried an rdp connection to the machine yet when its in this state. I've installed all updates from winupdate and have all the Samsung drivers installed through the Samsung driver tool. I've seen people report similar issues, but in those cases they seem to indicate that the machine is completely frozen. from what I can tell, i'm at least partially alive. anyone seen anything similar?to recover, I need to do a hard reset, but even then it takes at least a couple of times of full power cycling to recover to the point where the lock screen will work again. Password: xxxxxxx : How did a password get assigned? What is going on here, I delete it out and when I start an app on the web the user names and password is assigned automatically. Why is Microsoft Word 2010 gone once I upgraded to Windows 8?
After finally upgrading to Windows 8 with a lot of trouble, I finally have it on my laptop. It looks beautiful, I love the feel of it and it seems like it will do very well. However, when I upgraded I only chose the option of keeping personal files, as it wouldn't let me upgrade if I did it along with files and settings. Now Microsoft Word 2010 is gone. Also, many other programs are gone as well. To add to the troubles, the app store won't let me download apps. Whenever I try to it says that something went wrong and my purchase couldn't be completed. I have all my information in and all the correct billing information in, but it still won't let me.
