Can't Boot Vista Laptop - How to Recover without Recovery CD?
I have a Vista laptop. I believe it may have a virus or some problem. It does not boot properly. I was going to use the Recovery CDs that came with it to re-install the system back to how it was delivered. But when I went to find the CDs, I discoered that I had discarded the wrong ones. My previous laptop was the same brand. My question is this. How can I reinstall Windows Vista or even upgrade to Win 8 if I can't boot my PC? A second question - if I were able to get Windows to start properly, can I make my own Recovery CD? TIA View this thread

prepairing your desktop, instead of welcome
When I shut or restart I get a message Preparing your desktop, I get my desktop but my files have disappeared If instead of above message I get Welcome, then everything is correct. It may take quite a few times of shutting and starting my computer, before I get the Welcome message. Thanks for any assistance. Michael View the thread

Windows 7 Build 7601 this copy of windows is not genuine
I have had a ASUS laptop for over a year now, which I bought from Best Buy. Recently, I was trying to do some preventative maintenance on my computer, which included downloading 3 or 4 windows updates which were waiting for me. I also deleted a few different anti virus programs which I had installed piecemeal over the last year and installed McAfee total protection. Finally, I uninstalled some other programs that I installed and never use, and adjusted some power settings to ensure that I was getting the best performance I could. After doing all of this, the next time I booted the computer, I got the notification that my version was not valid. When I tried to reenter the key, I received an error code: 0x80070424 Description: The specified service does not exist as an installed service. I tried to connect to the internet via WiFi as well as by LAN and it won't detect the connection at all. If I look in the devices and printers folder, it won't locate any devices. I connected an external hard drive to start moving my important files, and windows won't recognize the USB drive. Volume control doesn't work. Restore gives me an error. I'm paralyzed at this point. I don't think I was given a CD copy of Windows 7 when I bought the computer, so how do I do a complete reinstall? What can I do? View the thread

Can't activate windows 7
I recently had a new lap top supplied to me from work because my laptop at home has broken beyond repair. I didnt like all the extra software that toshiba had installed on the computer and as I was 2 days away from travelling out from UK to Asutralia i decided it would be quicker to reformat myself. I did a clean install of windows 7, using the disc I had for my home PC. I thought that the windows key that came with the laptop would be ok to use but it refused the key, so i decided to install from my own disc being as it is not being run on my home computer anymore. I now have the activation window counting down the days I have left to activate and I am in australia, and cannot get back to the UK for 3 weeks. I am worried sick that my laptop will stop working and that I will not be able to communicate with home or do any work. I do not have the product key from the disc with me, I only have the key on the back of the lap-top. Is it possble for microsoft to reassign the activation key in my windows to the one which is current andd was initially installed on my lap top. Any help or feedback will be very much aappreciated. I rely on my laptop for everything from famly communications to work diary, repot writing etc. At the moment i don' dare to try doing anything myself incase I make a mistake and lose the days left before it freezes from not being activated. nVidia - Graphics Adaptor Update failing to install
On 10/18/12 I received an automatic Windows update of my nVidia drivers. They apparently failed to install and caused me to have to restore my system to an earlier version. I went to the nVidia web site and tried manually updating the graphics drivers. They failed there as well. Anyone else experiencing this problem? View the thread

Scam Emails: The Benin Republic/Ghana Scam
Lately, like a number of other posters, I have been deluged with scam solicitations from, purportedly, the Benin Republic or Ghana stating that I have won a fortune, or that a trunk is waiting to be delivered to me, or that I am the recipient of an ATM card worth millions. All I need do is supply name, address, phone number, email address, profession, etc. Of course, I know this is a scam/phishing, but have become so frustrated with their audacity that I have composed a threatening and cryptic "reply." I do not, however, open any attachments. This approach seems to have no effect, and these lowlifes, losers and criminals continue their emails, sometimes 7-8 a day at a clip. These morons also have a terrible command of the English language, which is amusing, because some of them pose as solicitors, barrister, and priests. They are fearless and are not intimidated, probably because they are half-way around the globe and believe themselves to be impervious. Interestingly, as soon as I turn on my computer in the morning, I receive at least one of these emails within a matter of minutes, leading me to believe there is a cookie deposited on my computer that tips them off, but I don't know which cookie, and I am not even sure about that. I have pretty good anti-virus software and malware: Norton 360, Webroot Secure Anywhere, and East-Tec Eraser. This, unfortunately, is not enough to run the interference I need for this type of scam/phishing. There must be a way to pre-empt these emails, but I am at a loss to know how. I'm surprised the authorities are not on this more than they are. Any suggestions? View this thread

Windows 8 image restore cannot find my very existing system image backup?
Hi, What are prerequisites for Windows 8 system images to be "found" by the system image restore facility? Any way to force Windows 8 to find a specific backup that is for some reason invisible to the restore facility? I made a system image of my Windows 8 Pro installation (using Control Panel -> Windows 7 File Recovery -> System image), then installed another OS on my main drive for a while, and now I'm trying to revert to the Windows 8 image I have. The problem is that the system image restore function does not find any images on my machine. I don't think this is an issue with missing drivers, because the hard drive and the system image files themselves can be seen by launching the command prompt right from the the Windows 8 recovery mode (which can be reached either by using the installation media, or by going to Settings -> PC Settings -> General -> Advanced startup). For some reason, the system image restore fails to recognize the backups. At the same time, it is able to see some older (Windows 7 related) images that I have on a separate drive. I'm pretty much clueless as to the reason, but for what it's worth, here are some random thoughts that have crossed my mind: Can the new VHDX backup format be somehow messing up discovery? It would seem kind of far fetched to even suspect Microsoft of releasing a product which does not recognize its own new backup format? Does recovery of a system image require that the same Windows 8 installation that made the image is still installed (i.e. is the use somehow limited strictly to recovery from disasters, as opposed to recovery after installing a totally different OS in between installations? Any ideas are very welcome! View the full article

To whom it may concern at Microsoft.
To whom it may concern at Microsoft. Today I received a phone call from someone who claimed to be a technician from Microsoft. He called me from 1(651)420-1786. He had me push the "windows" key next to the "Ctrl" key and at the same time, push the "r" key. this brought up a window which he had me type in "eventvwr" and push enter. this brought up a screen and he had me click on the "custom views" folder and then the "administrative events" within that folder. this showed me some error problems. then he had me close that window, and again he had me push the "windows" key next to the "Ctrl" key and at the same time, push the "r" key. then he had me type in "iexplore support.me" which brought up an internet window that wanted a 6 digit code. He then wanted to provide me with that code, a code for a year would cost $100.00, and he offered a code that would be good for 2 years or I could purchase a code good for life. I did not trust him, so I am trying to send you this email to inform you about this. View this thread

Start button disappearing problem
Will Microsoft be fixing the issue with start button, where if one is using a mouse and moves to the bottom left side of screen to make the Start button appear (why? One can't help but ask... the taskbar is there, so why not just have a permanent button on it like the last 20+yrs of GUI usability has proven works!!? BAD decision that one!!) ... why the start button disappears even though I haven't yet moved my mouse off of it. I'm still hovering my mouse pointer over it, but yet it still disappears and more often than not I end up clicking the program underneath it instead. Would it be possible to make the Start button NOT disappear until the user makes the decision to move their mouse pointer from it completely. If my pointer is hovering over it, I don't understand why it is disappearing. This goes against ALL usability practices!! This is a deal-breaker. If this isn't repaired within the next month I shall be uninstalling Windows 8 from my own machine and recommending that all of my clients DO NOT upgrade to it. I shall also be actively promoting alternatives to Windows 8. This is such a shame! You had the chance to make something great, but instead you gave us Windows 8. Umm catchy...!! (unlike Windows 8 uptake!) View the full article
