Hi All, I have an issue with the Windows Log In Screen unfortunately it does not happen everytime. The issue is this: When I wake up my laptop from sleep it displays my Windows 8 Log in background but does not show the clock or the notification and clicking on the background it does not go to the password prompt. I have to restart my laptop and then it works fine. This has happened often enough to become a nuisance especially when I have an urgent matter to take care of and I end up restarting the laptop instead. View the full article

Hello, I have a bunch of old computer lying around and I want to sell them. I have the xp home install cd that came with one of them so i am wondering if it would be illegal to use that cd on all the computers. From my research I learned that my cd has a built in product key and then on some forums it said it was illegal to use the same product key on more than one computer. If it is illegal then can I just change the product key to the one on the side of the computer? Please help View this thread

I have a pavilion g6 AMD 64x processor. I purchased this computer on October 16th, 2012. I upgraded to Windows 8 about two weeks ago. I deeply regret upgrading to Windows 8 and would not recommend it to anyone with this laptop until they fix the issues. My computer is seriously screwed up now and it is all because of Windows 8. I have contacted Microsoft 4 times about my updates stalling at 13%. Each time the updates are forced through and I am able to restart my computer without problems until a few days later when my computer tries to update again and then I am back to the original problem of not being able to update and stalling at 13%. This process takes HOURS until finally I get a message saying update failed, reverting changes.I have an error code - 800F0920. I am extremely frustrated and this is going to end up costing me a lot of money. The only reason I upgraded is because I had a promo code to upgrade free when I bought my computer. Now, this is going to cost because I am afraid I am going to have to purchase windows 7 and go back to that unless there is something someone can do to help. Here is what I have done so far to try and fix this problem: Uninstalled Norton, installed windows defender. Contacted Microsoft 4x, gained remote access and used command prompt to install updates and fix computer health Uninstalled AMD High definition audio devices, manually installed updates successfully audio devices re-installed on their own after updates. Refreshed my PC, re-downloaded all necessary software that was taken off of my computer after refreshing Attempted to manually install updates, but when computer needs to restart it again stalls at 13% Some of these solutions have worked for that time, but like I said, once the update comes up again in a couple days or even the next day the issues start all over. Got a new HP laptop with windows 8. It's been running great.. very fast start up time. The last auto Windows update (yesterday) took about a half hour to install and restart. My laptop was very slow after that.. almost like dial up (I have Hi Speed wireless.. 20mbps) I changed the settings and un-installed the latest update. That took just as long. But after that it has been running great again. But windows keeps giving me messages to change my settings back to keep up to date. Says it is very important to do this. What happens if I don't? I like the speed I have now.. and it does everything I need as is. Advice? View this thread

Windows 8 Pro X64 In Windows 7 Ultimate x64 if I start Task Manager by right clicking on the taskbar and selecting it it starts without any UAC prompt running in my security context. It is only if I click on show processes from all users that I get an UAC prompt for an administrator password. Windows 8 Pro X64 Internet Explorer 10 For security reasons I have turned off the automatic search from the address bar feature in IE 10. Is there some key combination to manually trigger a search from the address bar? IOW, I want to be able to type in a phrase and then trigger a search manually. I cannot have IE 10 automatically trigger a search if a mistype a URL. By the way, Ctrl-e does not work. With automatic search turned of try typing "Internet Explorer 10" into the address bar and pressing Ctrl-e. All it does is put a question mark followed by a space in front of the phrase. I loaded Windows updates 2 days ago and now I can't open Word or Excel in Office Starter 2010 package, tells me to try again or repair using Control Panel. I have tried going back to a restore point before the error occurred but still get the same message. I have a Vista laptop. I believe it may have a virus or some problem. It does not boot properly. I was going to use the Recovery CDs that came with it to re-install the system back to how it was delivered. But when I went to find the CDs, I discoered that I had discarded the wrong ones. My previous laptop was the same brand. My question is this. How can I reinstall Windows Vista or even upgrade to Win 8 if I can't boot my PC? Have reloaded XP from a DVD back-up prepared on purchase of an Advent8111 laptop approx 6 years ago. The Advent now works ok with the original version of XP but attemps to upgrade to the current version fail with the message "Error number 0x80240036 The web site cannot display the page you are trying to view" . When I shut or restart I get a message Preparing your desktop, I get my desktop but my files have disappeared If instead of above message I get Welcome, then everything is correct. I have had a ASUS laptop for over a year now, which I bought from Best Buy. Recently, I was trying to do some preventative maintenance on my computer, which included downloading 3 or 4 windows updates which were waiting for me. I also deleted a few different anti virus programs which I had installed piecemeal over the last year and installed McAfee total protection. Finally, I uninstalled some other programs that I installed and never use, and adjusted some power settings to ensure that I was getting the best performance I could. After doing all of this, the next time I booted the computer, I got the notification that my version was not valid. When I tried to reenter the key, I received an error code: 0x80070424 Description: The specified service does not exist as an installed service. I tried to connect to the internet via WiFi as well as by LAN and it won't detect the connection at all. If I look in the devices and printers folder, it won't locate any devices. I connected an external hard drive to start moving my important files, and windows won't recognize the USB drive. Volume control doesn't work. Restore gives me an error. I'm paralyzed at this point. I don't think I was given a CD copy of Windows 7 when I bought the computer, so how do I do a complete reinstall? What can I do? View the thread
