This particular update will not install, been to site and tried manually instead of automatic and still wont download. Now it asked me to download a tool for auto update and the page keeps recurring three times and the page wont load at the "checking your computer for latest updates" page. now what? any suggestions? Hello, I have recently purchased a HP Pavillion DM1 Laptop, and tried to update after registering windows, there were a number of updates to be installed. It automatically restarted and reached 12% of the updates completed, I managed to get it to stop and restart windows, used control panel and tried to update one at a time. It got about halfway through and crashed again and got stuck at about 13% complete. I have eventually got back in and are having to do a system restore, which is ongoing at the moment. how can i put on all the updates. the computer is a netbook and does not have a CD/DVD drive and there was no program disc supplied. Hi - this is sort of two questions and an answer in one post. Answer first for those who don't want to read the technical stuff:DNS Client Service needs to be at least in a manual (not disabled) setting to indirectly launch a url in Metro IE in a reasonable amount of time due to what a appears to be a near-infinite loop. Technical stuff: I did the in-place upgrade from Windows 7 a couple weeks ago, and there were a few hiccups - but most were pretty common and I found a solution to pretty easily (Windows Store and others requiring Windows Firewall service, wiping the windows update history folder so built-in metro apps could update etc.). However, I had a very odd issue that hours of searching didn't find: Internet Explorer worked fine in all aspects in "desktop mode", and when launched directly in Metro. The problem came when using another metro app such as bing search that opens a URL from an app. It would take literally an entire minute every time - even if IE is already open. Sometimes IE wouldn't launch at all. For example, in Bing Search you could search for something OK, but click on a tile - or multiple! - and nothing "appears" to happen. Event Viewer did document it as an "Application Hang" with binary data as follows: ----- In Words 0000: 006E0055 006E006B 0077006F 0000006E 0008: 0000 In Bytes 0000: 55 00 6E 00 6B 00 6E 00 U.n.k.n. 0008: 6F 00 77 00 6E 00 00 00 o.w.n... 0010: 00 00 ----- Not that helpful. So I got down and dirty with SysInternal's Process Monitor and after some digging found out iexplore.exe kept going back and forth between the HOSTS file and dnscache registry keys (DNS Client) in what appears to be an infinite loop, though as mentioned it does usually _eventually_ launch after about 45 seconds due to some sort of "give up" mechanism. i have 4 hardrives in my P.C. all with independant win 7 or vista OS accessible by using the boot menu at startup . I decided to put win 8 on a spare hardrive and connect it up . win 8 works fine, i can see the other drives eventually and with a bit of luck move files around but it isnt as easy to as win 7 however the big problem occurs when i want to go back to a win 7 or vista drive as each time they startup they go into the check disk routine , which takes ages as it always finds faults on the win 8 drive, if i let it correct these issues win 8 starts to start up but hangs and there is no picture or anything on the screens. strangely enough if you leave it alone it will go into sleep mode but still no picture. I have now had to re-install win 8 3 times and have resigned myself to either making a win 8 p.c. or manually disconnecting the drive cables inside the p.c. each time i use win 8 not a good solution. A friend of mine has been called by "Microsoft". To cut a long story short: as result of some social engineering she has provided a bogus company access to her computer for several hours. Obviously I would like to reinstall Windows on her computer. She has a genuine Windows 7 version, but probably a reinstall should be done using a recovery partition. I am planning on erasing the entire HDD and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 7. Now I have an MSDN subscribers account. Can I just download Windows 7 there, install it and use the key that my friend has received with her copy of Windows 7? Or will that key fail? View the thread

I have scheduled MSE to run a full scan 1/week on Monday at 2:00am. Why is MSE not performing this scan? My pc at work is always turned on through the week but I do turn off the monitorat the end of each day. Is this due to the pc being in the sleep mode? View this thread

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)--When this update is installed, upon re-starting my display adapters & a network adapter (Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller) no longer work. Upon uninstalling them, I have not been able to re-install these devices. The network adapter problem stops me from using the internet. I have had to use my Restore feature to get back to normal. When I click on the "add gadgets" it takes me to a microsoft site http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows/downloads/personalize/gadgets that says they are no longer being offfered and there is a security issue. I just got this computer in October and was able to d'load them then, unfortunately the security release was from July. Would have been nice to know that first. They are still shown as a feature on the Windows 7 microsoft pages, that is how I found out about them. Also the Fix it for me page for the security issue is unclear, I don't know whether I am supposed to be enabling or disabling. I have 2 failed windows 7 intalls taking up 35 gig of hard drive space. but I cannot find any windows.old files? The first instal failed as I had a counterfeit copy of windows 7. I bought another copy and installed. I then got a horrible virus/worm that disabled all .exe files and the fix was just beyond me! I installed again but did not realise that the previous installations where still there. I have tried the disk clean up but i never get 'previous versions of windows' to clean up. I cannot find any windows.old files. (Enabled the hidden files) I only have a 60gig ssd hard drive and would like the missing 35gig kindly returned for use. Can any one help? View the thread

Hi, I started this process because my OHs computer was getting an error when Windows checked for updates. So I was following the Microsoft steps to try and resolve it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968003?ppud=4&wa=wsignin1.0#top First I did a full scan with the anti-virus on the PC, Kaspersky Internet Security, which found nothing. Then I ran the Microsoft Safety Scanner which found 3 threats: Exploit:java/CVE-2009-3867.CA - Removed Exploit:java/CVE-2009-3869.O - Removed Exploit:java/CVE-2008-5353.CG - Partially removed I've looked at the encyclopedia page for the exploit but it doesn't say how to get rid of it completely.
