  6. What do I do to repair it as cannot do so with Fix It. I have several updates pending, have lost Windows Live, my AVG is out of date. Tried various things but nothing at all works... Even my Restore program seems affected as can only go back a few days instead of going back weeks to restore points. I run Windows 7 64 bit op.system.. 4GB RAM and plenty of capacity available. 7. All other updates installed without any problem, only this one fails to install. My computer is properly connected to Internet. "Enable/Disable Windows Features" dialog works properly(I can add/remove functions to/from windows without problem). I've tried the following fixes without success: run "sfc /scannow" : it found some minor irrelevant problems and successfully fixed them all run the "windows update trouble-shooter": it reports that it found some problems("detected potential windows update database error 0x80073712" and "must repair windows update componets", both were marked as "fixed") and fixed them all, but all it actually did was clearing-out my "installed update" list without doing anything helpful disabling all non-MS services using MSConfig.exe run "dism /online /clearup-image /restorehealth": this one gives error 0x800f081f "Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired.", I've tried to use the "/source" switch to point it to a install source([extracted ISO]sourcessxs) but didn't help either. 10. Hi, I did an upgrade install of Win8x64 Pro (final) from Win7x64 Pro. It all went very well and everything appears to work, however... I typically backed up in Win7 every Thu lunchtime using the Win7 built-in backup software (which I was very happy with) and I noticed yesterday that it failed. It says: 'A shadow copy could not be created. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information. Details: Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data.' I checked the application event log but there isn't anything VSS or SPP relevant. I have four HDDs. The boot/Windows disk is a 256Gb SSD (C:). The next two disks are in RAID Mirror configuration and form a single 1Tb fault-tolerant disk where data is stored (D:). Finally I have another 512Gb disk for backups (U:). I use the Win7 backup system to backup a system image and files on the SSD to U:. This is primarily in case of SSD failure as the D: drive is already fault tolerant. As the SSD is the boot volume creating a system image is very important to me, hence why I am not using the new Win8 'File History' backup system. I even tried reformatting the backup (U:) drive to make sure it had all space available for the backup, but that didn't help. I was searching for issues relating to this when I came across these threads: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/fce6950d-c06d-4dd0-a850-67022db4fe04 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/ace0faac-a0af-4740-a331-2b14d604a846 Which seems to be very much the same sort of issue(s) on Win7. I ran "vssadmin list writers" as advised in one of the posts and it produced this output (I am only showing errors here): Writer name: 'System Writer' Writer Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220} Writer Instance Id: {fe25ff29-c773-4265-a663-f13eab503010} State: [7] Failed Last error: Timed out Writer name: 'MSSearch Service Writer' Writer Id: {cd3f2362-8bef-46c7-9181-d62844cdc0b2} Writer Instance Id: {12940831-5c84-4a78-ab98-b8a6a37ff214} State: [7] Failed Last error: Timed out I also checked my System partition (on the SSD) using the Disk Management service. It seems to contain two extra hidden small OEM partitions, one on the SSD and the other on the backup drive. All disks/partitions are healthy. The System 'RECOVERY' partition on the SSD is 752Mb in size and 327Mb (43.5%) is free. I did try unchecking the "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" box on the RECOVERY drive, but it complained about permissions for some files and in any event it didn't help with the backup problem. I do have one other outstanding issue, which might be related as the search service is one of the vss problems above: If I go to the Indexing Options ("Change how Windows Searches") control panel and click "Modify" then I get a message box which says: "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfil the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client." I have Office 2007 Pro on the machine. I have tried setting Outlook as the default mail client, but this does not help with this issue. However, the searching of email seems to work fine within Outlook, although it seems to have been removed from the Win8 interface search (shame!). Anyway, the backup problem is the main issue and I am not exactly sure where to go next on this, so I would appreciate any help or advice. There are a lot of things that I could try in the threads I have pasted above, but they all seem quite risky (e.g. moving/recreating boot partitions) and they relate to Win7 not Win8 so I would like to be sure that whatever I try next is safe and likely to work, particularly as I don't have a backup to restore to if it all goes wrong. Anyone have any ideas please? Thanks, Phil View the full article
  11. Everything on my screen is super-magnified: wallpaer, icons, etc.. even everything on AOL. I don't know what I hit, but it is making things difficult for games, going online, etc. Magnifier is at 1x. How can I shrink everything back to normal? View this thread
  12. OK...so, when the updates start installing on shut down are they actually being installed or just downloaded for me to install. And if they're being installed and I don't have to do anything with them, why do they include a setup application in the folders. (Found in the Software Distribution Folder) I see so many questions about others having trouble installing updates and started wondering if I am supposed to run these setups. I'm running XP with SP3 I think this is probably a 'duh' type question but if nothing else you got a moment of LOL. Thanks, Julie View this thread

  14. If anyone can help...the game was offered by a trusted game site I have used for three years...only have had problems is their 'trademark' game offered once a year at thanksgiving...the original size stated from what I read would be o.k. for my computer to handle...but when game came out I honestly did not check the release size...so I downloaded...played a while...could not figure why the screenshots looked different...got stuck...game had lots of use of video moments...well at the time they worked well...but thats not the end...I went back to my regular webpage and found there were many members 'upset' at how this game somehow had black borders on top and to the right...THEN...I uninstalled both the game and the 'game manager', messed with the settings (not working) so set back to original, did the ratio aspect check, ran chkdsk diagdx, changed page sizes, turned off computer (it did work last time when this happened)...now still have the toolbar at bottom showing a 'squeezed up' status and my REGULAR games are WAY OUT of size when I try to play, cannot read the bottom at all...just had the puter fixed and updated august 2012 and EVERYTHING about this game site WORKED!...now am in a living '****' b/c I have over 400+ plus games I cannot play, unless I guess what the heck is needed per screenshot...I have notified this game site with a 'fix it' report...but I cannot afford to change up anything in puter at this time to 'just run' their 'game of the year'...I am so dissappointed as I told myself 'do not try this year' as last year was a 'warning' when that 2011 game did not play, at least it told me 'up front' that I did not have the updated 'video card'....will not spend the money on a card just for ONE GAME!...sorry to vent but its the four day holiday and my gaming is now limited to just about a 'no play status'...I am thankful it has not messed with the regular functions I use daily...but the boders are still showing when I open my system...not good! I have a acer monitor that does an 'auto adjust' ... I am wondering if its a problem?...cannot believe one game can do this problem with the regular screen display??? thanks, if u any suggestions I may have overlooked let me know...just plain flustrated!....vk View this thread
  15. As you can tell from my screen name, I'm a Quaker and we don't celebrate holidays because no day is any more holy than any other. So instead I devote the day to service by doing a major good deed. My good deed for today is to take this old computer that's been passed around among a set of elderly sisters, clean it up, and give it back to her. My labor is my gift to her. But I'm stuck. I've got it running, checked it out, removed some unneccessary programs and hardware, and got it connected to the internet. But now I'm stuck. Someone has moved the original hard drive (orignally C:, now F:), installed a new bigger HD, and then restored Windows XP Home Version to the brand-new C: drive. Howsomever, when I try to run Microsoft Update, it complains that I need to update Windows Update. When I try to do that, I get an error message that the update log is not in the expected location. I can't find the old log on the old drive, because I don't know what the file name is supposed to be. There IS a log of automatic updates going all the way back to 2009 (no, I'm not joking), all of which have failed with the same error message. So, what I need to know is how to get around this. I need to find, first, the original license file on the old hard drive, the one with the registration key, and move it to its proper location. Next, I need to either find the old log on the old drive and move it to the new drive, or to recreate it. I'm hoping that some super-expert out there is willing to help me with this good deed, as his/her good deed for Thanksgiving, so if someone out there is willing to devote a little time instead of watching football today, would you please reply soon. I really need to get this machine updated, so I can start stripping the built-up garbage. Please? Judy in Idaho Falls View this thread

  24. Hi all, My computer automatically installed an update last night. Now the computer won't load Windows properly. It takes a long time to get to the password screen, then when I enter my password it takes a very long time to load and then does not load all the startup programmes, won't connect to the internet and won't really let me do anything. It works fine in safe mode although I tried to do a system restore and it said there was no restore point. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2 Any help would be much appreciated! :) Many thanks Samuel View this thread
  25. Every morning when I start my laptop I get a Windows Defender Warning - I have a "Severe" problem. Worm:Win32/Phorpiex.B It will not allow me to remove it so I tried downloading Malware protection - I ran the Full scan and it identified 7 objects (none which seemed to be this worm) - I deleted those and ran the Quick scan and it gave me a green light - no maliscious software. So I ran the Windows Defender scan and that said the same thing - no problem. But I still keep getting this pop up warning every morning when I log on ? Any help greatly appreciated, Regards, Shane PS. Not sure how this forum works so my e-mail if anyone can help is *** Email address is removed for privacy *** View this thread
