I'm a new Windows user, having crossed over from Macintosh. I have everything up and running on my new laptop (email, network, apps, etc.) and I installed virus protection. My only problem so far is trying to update Windows. I'm getting an error message, 80240440. I ran a checked and two items were identified and corrected, but it didn't resolve the problem. I've tried several times during the past few hours and still can't seem to get Windows updated. Can anyone offer a little help? What might be preventing the update? View this thread

I turned on laptop + got message 'installing update 1 of 4, do not turn off etc'.An hour+ later exactly the same message is showing. Surely it shouldn't take so long? Any ideas pls? View this thread

Hi all, I have a Sony laptop with windows 8 which has just forced me to restart because of an update. When it started back up I noticed that my Dropbox and other notifications were not starting up. When I went to power setting it said "update and restart" so I assumed it needed to apply further updates. Clicking this or "update and shutdown" did nothing, I could not restart the laptop Having no choice I held down the power button and when it turned off I started it back up. When starting up it said there was an error and it is fixing it, stating it could take over an hour. About 10 minutes later the screen had lines all over it and it automatically restarted, then it said a problem was encountered and have me the option to restore which I chose. It is now, and has been for over an half an hour (at time of writing), stuck on the loading screen (black screen with blue windows logo), but no loading icon. But the hard drive light has been on all this time! Anyone else having this problem? Is it actually doing anything? Any tips on how to get my laptop working again? When I try to UPDATE the program & definitions, it then displays: " Virus and spyware definitions: Created 30 days ago " How can I UPDATE in REALTIME ?...OR, is it, and it just DOESN'T SHOW that it is...As I just TODAY installed it.. I have the Microsoft Security Essentials as my security on my computer. I noticed this morning that the sheild at the bottom of the page stayed red, and I got a message the the Virus Protection was turned off. I manually turned it on but it does not say it is on and the shield is still red. I am scared to do anything till it comes up green. I tried the security essential fix system but it did not find anything wrong. View this thread

I had a call from a tech from this company about errors and virus's on my computer. He stated Mircosoft generated a report to them about the number of errors. In the end he tried to sell me Mirosoft antivrus for life. Has anyone used this company? Is there a antivirus that is recommended by mircosoft that is less than $200. thanks for any input. I'm trying to play videos on my Windows 8 and all I can see is a black screen and I can only hear the sound. This happens when i watch video from my hard drive.but if i watch any video on Mozilla Firefox that's works fine. I can't understand why. I've installed already the K-Lite Codec pack and I've upgraded my AMD video card. But still no luck. Only sound , no video. Also, if it helps, I have a Vaio LAPTOP MODEL VPCEB1S0E. Windows then tells you that there are no drivers for this printer! This is a standard bubble jet printer, Canon only supported them up to XP. Any ideas how to work around this? I know somwone is going to tell me to buy a new printer, well that should not be the solution everytime Microsoft decides to come out with a new version of it's software. I have not been able to find any drivers for this, any ideas? A little compatibility would go a long way. Jeff View the thread

When I hook up camera to computer it instantly says locating and importing pictures. After 10 minutes of loading and importing the computer screen says cannot locate new pictures or videos. Camera has pictures needing to download. I tryed second camera with same results. Nothing is being downloaded to computer. View the thread

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 7. I saved many important files from the old computer but can't access them from the disk in E drive to put back in C. The dialogue box says to drag files to save I want to open the files on the disk. How does Windows 7 do that? Thanks. View the thread

Four days ago my daughter was doing her homework and downloaded a picture. Immediatly MSE detected PWS:Win32/zbot, quarantined it and told me to re-start my computer in order to apply the actions. However every time I re-started the computer the virus reappeared so I decided to do a system restore and re set the computer to a previous date. After doing this the virus is not showing, although mse history is showing that it was quarantined several times. I have run the microsoft security scanner and the virus is not showing, but has it really gone? I have changed all my passwords to my online accounts using another computer. I am now unsure if it is safe to access these accounts from this computer. View this thread

I have downloaded my photos & videos from my phone over the last year & this week transferred the majority of my photos onto disc. However, I have now looked at my videos and they are jumpy - the sound & pictures are jumping on all videos - videos from last year right up to the videos that I put on this month.
