Can't Get Windows Defender To Update
I'm running Windows 8 with Windows Defender as the primary anti-virus program. I've been using it and updating it since launch without problems. Recently I got a popup saying I need to update my Defender. Whenever I click on update it loads for a bit and then says the update failed and that I need to check my network or internet connections. Error code: 0x80240022 Description mentions that Defender couldn't download definition updates. Might be caused by missing system file or an incorrect setting or a problem with the registry file. I haven't touched any of the settings on Defender since I upgraded from Windows 7 to 8. View this thread

Windows 7 will not operate with MP Navigator Ex 2.12
I have a Canon Scanner LiDE 700F which was working fine until a couple months ago after an update from Microsoft. Now the program that is to be used with the scanner - MP Navigator Ex 2.12 does not work & I keep getting an error message advising that the program does not respond and will close down and Windows sends an error report and will advise if they find a solution. What I would like to know is there another program that I can use with this scanner instead of the MP Navigator Ex 2.12 as Microsoft has not come up with a solution? I am very annoyed with Microsoft and all the so-called updates that I receive and then interferes with other equipment or programs already installed. Windows 7 OS - Canon LiDE 700F Scanner - MP Navigator Ex 2.12 which came with the scanner. View the thread

Repair Cure?
I had to take my computer in to have the Trojan:32/alueron removed at office depot because I could not get the windows defender offline that I had downloaded to work. Office depot made quite a few changes to my computer including adding, it seems, a team viewer. I have not given them permission to share anything on my computer, and I would like to remove the team viewer. However, I can't find it in my programs, I can only find changes made to my computer using it after my repair. Also, since the repair when I browse around 15 times an hour I am hit with Trojan:JSMedfos.B severe. Can you help me with this? I don't think this was a cure. My computer never got virus' like this before the repair. View this thread

Java/CVE-2011-3544.NF
Hello, A few weeks ago MSE picked up Exploit: java /CVE- 2010-0094.BL Exploit: java/CVE-2010-084.AJ Trojan:Java/MESDE. Upon researching the virus found that best idea was to delete Java from my system which I have done. Last night upon completing a full scan of my computer MSE again picked up Java/CVE-2011-3544.NF. Then ran Microsoft Safety Scanner to ensure that it was gone. Did more research and it seems that this strain of virus can also be picked up just by visiting a site and not clicking on a link. Big clue that something was wrong yesterday was the blacking out of web pages when mouse scrolling. Scroll up and page view would return. Questions: -- Is it possible that this virus is not being completely removed from my system and is hiding a small packet in my memory as is suggested by some in the numerous articles about this virus. If so, outside of doing a reinstall, is there a way to detect pieces of stowaways such as this? -- And, besides keeping my temp files cleaned and deleting history when I close my browser, what else can I do? What kind of damage is this virus doing to my computer? Can it spread to my back-up drive and thumb-drives? Thank you! View this thread

Ayogi Windows Tech Support Scam
I just nearly fell for a Technical Service scam by Indian operators under the guise of Ayogi, a reputable company. They call on the pretense that your computer has been sending error messages to Microsoft for 2 weeks and is therefore company policy to investigate the incidence. They first attempt to prove to you that they are genuine by getting you to access your windows internal error log file and showing you a large amount of error messages. In this case it was 18000 corruption errors in MsiInstall.exe. They will further attempt to prove themselves by supplying you with the real BSB Number of Ayogi, intimate details of the company, and reciting your CSLID number, even when your internet is disconnected. They get you to run a hardware check on your computer and if it returns as being out of warranty they will offer 4 different warranty options (1 year, 2 year, 3 year and lifetime warranty ($400). This includes 6 years of anti-virus for up to 5 computers They will then request access to your computer via a remote access program and scan your system for viruses and errors using programs such as Advanced System Care and Deep Care. They will take pains to show you what they are doing during their operation to complete the illusion of transparency. They have access to license codes for AVG anti-virus program that will extend its duration for up to 6 six years. they also have access to license keys for Windows 7, which they used to to fix a siblings computer who had let his license lapse. They will also offer licenses for Security programs which you have installed ($50 for 6 years) if they see you are currently using a !legal! free trail version of the product It is also apparent that they had many codes for most other security programs. At the end they will direct the victim to Western Union money exchange website (the real deal) and will not turn off the remote viewing program unless asked. They will get the victim to send money to a man, last name Pal to West Bengal. refuses use of Paypal due to apparent security issues. THEY ARE WILLING TO SPENT UP TO 3 HOURS PROVING THEIR VERACITY AND APPEAR TO BE VERY PROFESSIONAL, TRANSPARENT AND FRIENDLY. They will hand out good computer advice, such as backing up files to a external hard drive while they scam you. I did not send any money to them in the end. However I still have the 6 year AVG subscription and Windows License that they gave me. I need information on how to purge any malware which may have accumulated on my PC's during this experience. I am not willing to reconnect my computers to the internet until i am sure that they are safe again. Also need advice on what to do with the license keys they activated on my programs. They did not install them again and therefore I think that they are still safe, but now fully licensed though. Should I delete these programs? MsiInstall.exe is still erroring out as well, how can I fix this? I have also been locked out of my personal PC and need help on how to re-access it. View the thread

How do I fix an error "0x80070490" for Windows 8
I have no idea what happened. I just bought this laptop from Wal Mart on Monday the 18th. I get home and everything is running just fine. Until I was trying to make sure that it was all up to date. I looked for updates in the HP help center, which of course I did find about three. So I installed the updates. I didn't really notice anything wrong until my Internet Explorer started acting up. So I went ahead and told the computer to check for any Windows Updates, and then I got the message that I needed to "Repair Windows Update Database Corruption"... It says: *Potential Windows Update Database Error Detected 0x80070490 *Error 1 -Access to the Path 'C:\Windowssoftwaredistribution' is Denied I was just recently robbed, otherwise I wouldn't have even had to go and blow money that I didn't have in the first place, just to buy another computer. So I am not very happy with what I am having to go through with this "NEW" Laptop from HP... I cant barely get it started up sometimes before I get a warning about the system using almost all the memory! PLEASE help me someone. I REALLY do not have the money to take this damn thing somewhere and have it fixed. Knowing my luck it wouldn't be covered in the warranty that came with it. Even so, I really need to have it with me, and not out somewhere getting fixed! Thank You James View this thread

Any reason why KB932349 is unavailable from Microsoft Catalog ?
Hello Community, after upgrading from Windows ME (Millennium Edition), I just found that my Windows XP SP3 still has some unupdated components that so far Microsoft Update has never identified nor fixed (notably inside %windir%SYSTEM32 for now I only identified MSCOMCTL.OCX and MSCOMCT2.OCX). Since I'd like to at least manually fix both files ASAP, is there any reason why KB932349 (MS08-070) is unavailable from Microsoft Catalog in any language ? If no reasons really exist, could you please kindly ensure this is fixed ASAP and let me know once KB932349 is on Microsoft Catalog ? P.S. JFYI even without any detection from Microsoft Update, I already found that KB2597112 (MS12-027) already exist on Microsoft Catalog so at least for now I'll manually update MSCOMCTL.OCX . Post submission Editing: Unluckily I just found that MSCOMCTL.msp from KB2597112 (MS12-027) won't install because I don't have Office 2003. So any more suggestions to overcome this is welcome too... -) Thanks in advance for any collaboration. Best Regards Rob View this thread
