Any help in resolving would be appreciated. My computer knowledge is pretty basic as you may have gathered and I would need step by step instructions I am afraid. Thanks. View this thread

  6. I'm using a Toshiba Equium laptop on Vista, an HP F4180 printer. None is new (obviously) and the printer has worked fine in the past. It's been causing problems over the last few months and I've updated drivers when the HP website has said to do so. It worked OK for basic printing but sometimes took a while if there were heavy graphics. Suddenly, it decided to take about 5 minutes from 'print' to any action on the printer and then it would do one pass in about 5 minutes - so it is taking quite a long time to print anything. I swopped printers to my old HP 3920 and it was exactly the same. I've been through the troubleshooting procedure, print spooler is exactly as it should be so can only assume that it's not the printer at fault. What to try next? Any ideas? Is the print spooler file corrupted? How to re-install? Will it help? Any assistance would be appreciated. View this thread
  7. Media Player needs help badly. 11 worked far better and with less frustration. Media Player 12 will not Sync to anything except an audio player. SD cards USB sticks mass storage of any kind are not seen by the player. No issues with windows seing them and recognized for what they are. why such problems for simple normal everyday use items. Even to editing the files so they are in the right place in the library is near to impossible. I can't believe microsoft would change a functional system for something that should be scrapped. I've some coments about unistalling and re installing why so labour intensive there has to be an easier answer.....does anyone have one?? except for gett WMP 11 to work on Windows 7 & 8 View the full article

  15. Original title: lost downloaded file. As my AVG is about to expire, I, following my computer man's advice to download, uninstall and then install. took the following steps. went to Avg free. downloaded it, and lowered it to the task bar. then I went the control panel, opened add/remove programs and proceeded to uninstal the old AVG. Now comes the crux of the matter, when I tried to pick the downloaded file (AVG free), it wasn't there. I do not have enough computer savvy to figure this out, and if you choose to reply, would you Please be very specific--I am not smarter than a 5th grader. Thank you View this thread
  16. Basically the Start Screens layout will mess up a lot when you install some program that is already a member of group, but that group had been automatically hidden because it was empty. Reconfirmation: Start Screen fails (messes up) if a group is initally &quotvirtualized&quot away - and after that a program is installed that would have belonged in that group. Problem: The Start Screen never rediscovers the group membership of that program on i.e. PC2. However, that program formally has a group membership on the Start Screen web service i.e. originating from i.e. PC1. Symptom: The effect of the sync problem - originating from the lack of rediscovery (alike rediscovery when you first login into a new PC and connect with the Start Screen) seems to lead to that the formal group is removed and not only is the pins from that group pushed to the far right - also all other potential pins on PC1 that is not a group member on PC2 is also suddenly appearing to the far right on the Start Screen. Test: 1) Login in with a new account &gt create a start screen on PC1 &gt create some group &gt install some program &gt and pin it in that group (do not put anymore pins in that group for this test) 2) Login in with the same account for the first time on PC2 (i.e. use you Microsoft Account or connected domain account), where that program is not installed &gt the group is &quotvirtualized&quot away (does not appear) &gt logoff or restart &gt login 3) Install that program on PC2 - that was put in that group on PC1 - 4) Later the Start Screen for some reason will mess up on PC1 - after step 3 The test was done with a connected domain account and a roaming profile. I.e. a normal use case in companies. View the full article
  17. Hi, Tried to contact Microsoft Technical Support by email but went around in circles on their Australian website. Seems you can only call the customer support line and they transfer you. This is not always suitable if you have a difficult question and have screen dumps to show the problem. Only way I could contact Microsoft this time was to copy an address from a technician replying to previous issue. Does anyone know of a direct way to contact Microsoft. Thanks Brian View the thread

  19. PowerShell probably got on my computer as part of an update from Windows. I don't know and don't feel I want to know how to operate it, as I don't see what good it is going to do me. So, since there is no Uninstall link, and it does not appear in Add/Remove Programs, can I just leave it and get on with my life? In other words, is it going to be harmful? View this thread
  20. After installing service pack 3, there is 100 percent demand on the CPU, and system idle is at 99 percent. Uninstalling the service pack, and re-installing service pack 2 resolves the memory leak ?? Computer slows the the equivalent of a pentium 75. This seems to be the norm with some AMD users in different forums around the net. All programs closed, startup programs suspended, and the cpu draw is 100 percent. I even tried a reformat and clean install to resolve possible, software and hardware conflicts, unplugging all but the to be local/ logical drive. This makes it difficult to install Windows 8, and resolving this may end a mass of complaints of install failures many are having to deal with. Including myself. I am running 3000+ MB, AMD 1.8, Ram/ 2 gigs. A basement and old configuration, but this problem is not limited to mine, but duals and quads as well. Anyone have any Ideas???? View this thread
  21. Windows 7 successfully downloads updates OK. Then later, no knowing when, Windows 7 simply re-boots RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF MY WORK -- WHICH IS LOST. It does NOT ask my permission to re-boot, it just re-boots. The re-boots are successful and Windows 7 runs fine thereafter. However, whatever I am working on when this happens is LOST. Where is the setting to make Windows 7 ask my permission BEFORE re-booting for updates ?? thanks, Bob View the thread

  25. I have a retail version of Windows 7 Home Premium, with key. I plan to build an entirely new computer (CPU, MB, case, memory, video card, etc.), but then use my current hard drive (because it's quite new), on which I personally installed Windows 7 about one year ago. I've read various posts on both Microsoft Forums and other sites. But the answers are somewhat contradictory: I'll just need to do a Windows repair I'll need to simply activate my Windows again via phone I'll need to do a complete fresh install and variations of all of these? Can someone give me the real story about what I'll need to do? FYI, I currently back up my data files using Memeo Instant Backup onto a Seagate external drive, and also use Windows 7 backup onto a different external drive. I don't, however, presently have a complete mirror image backup (or whatever it's called), although I could, of course. I'd appreciate some assistance on how I should proceed. Thanks. View the thread
