Virus changed all .exe files to 4g. When open property, the type of file is 4g and can't rename them. Can you help! View this thread

I am running a 2009 Dell XPS ONE 2010 with Vista Home Premium SP2. About two years back, I noticed that Windows Installer had quit working and I could not install Microsoft programs or uninstall most programs, could load 3rd party programs like Turbotax, but could not uninstall them. I purchased Microsoft Expression Web software and had to pay MS $100 to load it. MS uninstalled Office 2007, cleaned up Windows, installed Expression Web, and reinstalled Office 2007. When MS loaded Expression Web, they advised me to use Revo Uninstaller which can be forced to work. because the normal MS Program Uninstaller will not work I cannot install any MS programs such as the Windows 7 upgrade advisor or other MS software. When MS installed Expression Web, they said they could not fix the installer failure without a custom reinstall of Vista which I chose not to do. Strangely, MS Windows Updates work just fine. Over the last three months, I have read and tried all the MS suggestions to fix this problem without success. The installer failure message is "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed........." Now I want to install new web site creation software but it will not install. I purchased the Windows 7 Upgrade Home Premium package but it fails with the message my computer in not compatible with Windows 7. I suspect the upgrade fails because the Installer Service fails. I don't want to do a Custom install of Windows 7 due to the work required to reinstall all my software. I have an app dll that refuses to register in Windows8. It worked fine in Windows7. Some users report it works OK on there system but most report the same error When we run regsvr32 to register the dll, it generates an error that says it was loaded ok but the call to DLLRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80004005. Research on this error says it corrected by running with elevated rights. We run the process as an Admin. We have tried opening CMD prompt as an Admin, turned off Windows Defender, disabled Windows Firewall and also tried doing it in Safe Mode. Every attempt always returns the same error code. I have tried multiple searches but all say just to run in an elevated mode. We do but it still fails. All searches indicate the error is an indicator of a security issue. Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this and how to correct it - Can you help me find the forum that would be appropriate for this info. The app ran fine in Win7, and survived an in-place upgrade to Win8. It seems to appear with new OS installs or when the registry is cleaned of any reference to the app and then an install is attempted. On XP sp3, Need to delete Outlook Express 6, cannot find it in Add/Delete. Even searched hidden folders. Cannot find it, Also tried in Programs, Accessories, etc. How can it be deleted so we can try a re-install.? My computer recently contracted a virus (I forget the name, but I found a description on the Web). I removed it using the MS Emergency Response Tool which removed two files. I then ran MS Defender at full scan. Everything was clear. However, I now get a pop-up on the lower right of my window which says "Detected threats are being cleaned - No action needed." I think this may be a remnant of the virus or the Emergency Response Tool. I don't think it's actually doing anything. How do I get rid of it? I have a screen print if anyone wants to see it. Thanks. There is a threat on my computer that Windows Security Esentials is reporting as "allowed" that I would like to remove from the "allowed" list? I can not find the list or a way to remove this item because it is said to be "allowed". View this thread

I have windows 7 and have MSE installed. I contracted a virus Trojan:JS/Medfos.B and the MSE does quarantine and then I can click remove all but I do not get rid of the virus. I am having trouble with some of the features on windows 8. Although I have an O2 connection, I can access my email and google etc however on some of the windows 8 features it says that I am offline in the top right corner. Hi, I have problems with the updates in a Win7 x64 Enterprise system. There are two updates missing that can not be installed, telling error code 80070490, therefore I downloaded the tool to fix it. It has been installed but the error remains... it was set in the solution for that problem that I have to repair the system with an inplace upgrade. First it looked nice, Win7 collected the data... but after a period of 7 hours working on it, the upgrade programm said "problems with the upgrade, no upgrade available"... Then I checked the registry integrity and ccleander found a problem with wuaucpl.cpl.. therefore I checked the system files and I found out that some of the windows update agent files are missing: cdm.dll wuaucpl.cpl wucltui.dll wuweb.dll can I fix that problem? Is there a standalone win update agent 256 download available (I could not found any by my searches)? My admin tells me to completely start with a fresh system, but I do not want to lose all my unique settings... "Failure to configure windows updates. Reverting changes" I just brought a new laptop today and was in the process of installing a number of windows updates (for Windows 8). However every time I do this the updates get to around 15% and I get the message above (When I look at my update history it appears that around 45 updates failed to install). I followed the advice giving by your engineers on the 7th of November (re altering options via "msconfig") but this does not appear to work. Can you help please? View this thread
