  1. Okay, so like I said, when I try to get security updates, I get a message saying "An error occured while checking for updates for your computer. Errors found: Code 80072EFE Windows Update encountered an unknown error." Code 0x80244015 comes up when I try updating Defender. I've had this laptop (it's a Toshiba Satellite L305, by the way) handed down to me and it has a number of problems. Another quite taxing problem is that I have had frequent crash dumps. Some programs that I want to uninstall wont uninstall because the uninstall file doesn't exist. I've installed a free trial of Revo Uninstaller Pro, and that has helped, but I still don't know what's causing the crash dumps. One of my latest issues with the laptop is that my computer crash dumps everytime I try to open Chrome now. It was working fine, then I would get BSOD like I just described, so I tried uninstalling it then reinstalling it, and it worked fine again for about a day, then it happened again. I feel like it may be a virus. I have also been told that it may be a registry error, and that I can edit my registry, but I know next to nothing about computers, so I may need to be walked through this. I have AVG, and I've used that to scan the computer, and I've also scanned with defender, and both programs have only found adware. I don't really think that could do much harm. I'm not sure. Right now it seems like a big mess of problems. I think I should also add that the laptop does not have trackpad software installed, or at least that's what it seems like. The previous owners told me that the trackpad never worked. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Any advice will help, so please leave as much as possible. Thanks View this thread

  3. I recently attempted to contact Yahoo.com to repair an email problem and was directed to Click4Support. They sold me a repair contract including Microsoft Security Essentials license for a three-year term. They showed me a csrss.exe file in my task manager and stated it was a Trojan that was stealing my computer information and shutting down Microsoft security files. They offered technical support to remove the virus, stating my McAfee program would not remove such virus/Trojan. After three hours of remote access to my computer to "fix" my problem, my email is still messed up and I am out over $200.00. Is this service approved by Microsoft or have I been duped? They say they are authorized to work with Microsoft systems and that the free Microsoft Security Essential download is a scam, that Microsoft does not offer the program for free. Any truth to any of this or do I have to cancel my credit card account as they now have that information as well? Thank you. View this thread
  4. I have had the MS security essentials for some time now. Since Yahoo has upgraded their servers to include Australia, I keep getting Yahoo's stupid yieldmanager cookie that hijacks my browser and takes it to some avg isearch engine. Why does MSSE not catch and delete this cookie? I do not want it tracking me. I have blocked it in my tools in my browser, but it comes back. I have to wonder if MS and Yahoo are in cahoots here. This is very frustrating. View this thread

  6. I have an Acer Aspire One computer. This computer is a few years old, and up until a few months ago, the webcam worked just fine. But now, for some reason, my computer can not locate my webcam at all. I have tried to use it through Skype, oovoo, and even some public chat rooms. No matter what I do, I cannot find it. How do I make it work again? After posting this, I continued to look. Under my "Scanners and Cameras" thing in the Control Panel, there is nothing. It is like my webcam doesn't exist at all anymore. 11. Hello. I am just getting used to the Microsoft Surface with Windows RT and require some guidance on running the Windows Defender. How do I do this? I searched high and low and cannot seem to locate a suitable method. I was taken to a link that has a version of Defender available for download but it is dated 05/23/2007 and is out of date. Further, it says "This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor." Does Defender come pre-loaded on the Surface and, if so, how can I run it? I have tried searching for it through the Search Charm but cannot get it to run. Help would be appreciated. Thank you, DL View this thread

  19. Attempts to start the Windows Firewall from the Control Panel, result in error message "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings." And, the Services tab is inspected, Windows Firewall is not listed. This problem started a few days ago as a result of some malware that infected the PC. I believe the malware is gone now. At least the Microsoft Security Scanner (msert.exe), MalwareBytes and Hitman Pro all report no issues - even after a reboot and use of Internet Explorer. Belowis the list of malware stopped/removed chronologically, by tool.
