Request for detailed information on how Windows 8 metro apps work
Everybody has probably come across the metro app crashing issues immediately after execution. I have solved a couple of these issues so far. One issue I solved by adding "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" permissions to a registry key ("HKCLwow6432nodeinterface", group policy applying and excluding read access for this user), one by adding permissions to "C:Program FilesWindowsApps" directory (same user), another by adding permissions to "%localappdata%Packages" (same user again). The most annoying thing about troubleshooting these issues is that I don't understand the detailed behaviours and workings of how these apps work, and I can't find any documentation on it either. I'm working on using WADK and procmon to gain some knowledge at the moment, but want to get the information faster. Is there anybody who can step through the registry keys, executables, directories, network addresses metro apps generally use and require for successful execution and the permissions required to access them for troubleshooting purposes? What If There Were a Windows 8 "Ultimate"?
Imagine the Ultimate edition that never was. This hypothetical beast would have all the best stuff from Enterprise and Pro, nothing more. Everything would be bundled in. Of course, it would be incrementally more expensive to cover Microsoft's costs for proprietary codec licenses, etc. There are things in Enterprise I like, but the volume licensing model doesn't seem to suit me. Basically I have a need for one copy. Pro, even with a free Media Center, doesn't compel me to upgrade. So... Basic question for those still sitting on the fence (i.e., who haven't yet bought Windows 8): If a Windows 8 Ultimate upgrade became available, say for the same price Windows 7 Ultimate was a few years ago, would you buy it? Would having the best of all worlds be enough to push you off the fence? -Noel Detailed how-to in my eBooks: View the full article

How does Windows determine dual-boot?
I want to understand the mechanics of multiple-booting. Feel free to point me to Microsoft links which explain this. How does Windows know how many bootable OS are present? Does Windows query each partition at boot to see if an OS resides there? Or is a pointer added to the MBR as each OS is installed so Windows merely needs to check the MBR? Let me complicate the qustion slightly. Suppose multiple disks are involved, each with an OS or two. If Windows queries each partition at boot to see if an OS resides there, then multiple disks does not change anything. However, if Windows stores this information in the MBR, how does that work for multiple disks, each with its own MBR? Does Windows look at every MBR it can find at boot? One more question. If Windows adds a pointer for each OS to the MBR, then what happens if an OS is deleted, for example, when a partition is deleted or a disk containing an OS or two is physically removed? Playing a XBOX Music Store Playlist on Windows 8/RT
I must be missing something. On the XBOX Music App, under "All Music" from the xbox music store it shows a couple of store based playlists. For example "Who's Next". When I select a playlist there doesn't seem to be any way to play it. It shows a random album cover that seems to be unrelated. If you click on any of the tracks XBOX Music will show the album that the track belongs to. Is this by design or am I missing a secret gesture. View the full article

Can't run driver updates
I use an optical keyboard and mouse from Logitech. They sent me updated software for this device, in both 34- and 68-bit versions. (My OS is 68-bit.) I downloaded both but when I try to run either one I get an error message indicating "this is not a valid Win34 application." Also, I see that the files they sent me are empty. Logitech tech support reps tell me these programs are downloaded regularly by many users and work fine. Can anyone think of what's going wrong? View the thread

Blocked Driver
My computer is asking me to download the update from the Tags SA website, because Tags Protection has been blocked. There are two possible files to download. I don't know which is best for Windows 7 and i don't want to mess anything else up. The message I received from my computer was about a blocked driver. From there I found out about the blocked protection that may create issues the next time I start up my computer. View the thread

Everything was working properly in IE 8 until this update was installed automatically. Now I have to uninstall it before I can use the internet. I contacted MS support and did the Hotfix program as well as the Fix utility. When I open Google for example, it says the page cannot open and asks me to download a txt file to my hard-disk. one persons observations...John Scalzi punts the start screen
Hugo award winner, writer and current president of the SFWA John Scalzi received his new computer around December 14 and at the time was interested in the start screen and "Windows Store App" mode. You can read his initial thoughts at: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/12/14/tech-notes-on-the-xps-one-and-windows-8 One month later he is installing Stardock and writes "I’ve come to believe the Win 8 start screen, and the whole environment it propagates is just terrible UI for those of us who actually use their computers for work, rather than using them just to play games and get on Facebook." He makes several good observations about his work-style and how the "Windows Store Apps" do not work well for him. Obviously everyone is different and their needs differ, but it makes for interesting reading. Check it out at: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2013/01/16/punting-the-start-screen/ View the full article

I get an error 643 while installing Windows Updates.
Original title : WINDOW 7 WON'T UPDATE I am running HP Pavilion p6740f Desktop with Windows 7, 64bit, Windows Home Premium. I have never had trouble with using Windows Update. But today I have attempted to install a Windows Update [actually two] and I am getting the same results...failed. I have done nothing that would account for this problem. I did repeat the attempt to download updates several times...failed. In the fail message it says ERROR 643. I also went online to see if anyone, in google, had this same problem. Several people did, but they don't have a solution. I need some help. Thanks, Joseph View the thread

What programs can I run in cmd prompt? (win xp)
Many programs in Windows XP can be run in the command prompt window (hereafter, "cmd window"). Some of these are linked to widgets, like sysdm.cpl, others run programs that display output in the cmd window, like net statistics server. I am looking for a list of programs that display output in the cmd window. Let's just limit it to the standard set of programs that come with Windows XP, if that's possible. Anyone have a link to such a list? Thanks. View this thread
