  2. Imagine the Ultimate edition that never was. This hypothetical beast would have all the best stuff from Enterprise and Pro, nothing more. Everything would be bundled in. Of course, it would be incrementally more expensive to cover Microsoft's costs for proprietary codec licenses, etc. There are things in Enterprise I like, but the volume licensing model doesn't seem to suit me. Basically I have a need for one copy. Pro, even with a free Media Center, doesn't compel me to upgrade. So... Basic question for those still sitting on the fence (i.e., who haven't yet bought Windows 8): If a Windows 8 Ultimate upgrade became available, say for the same price Windows 7 Ultimate was a few years ago, would you buy it? Would having the best of all worlds be enough to push you off the fence? -Noel Detailed how-to in my eBooks: View the full article

  5. I want to understand the mechanics of multiple-booting. Feel free to point me to Microsoft links which explain this. How does Windows know how many bootable OS are present? Does Windows query each partition at boot to see if an OS resides there? Or is a pointer added to the MBR as each OS is installed so Windows merely needs to check the MBR? Let me complicate the qustion slightly. Suppose multiple disks are involved, each with an OS or two. If Windows queries each partition at boot to see if an OS resides there, then multiple disks does not change anything. However, if Windows stores this information in the MBR, how does that work for multiple disks, each with its own MBR? Does Windows look at every MBR it can find at boot? One more question. If Windows adds a pointer for each OS to the MBR, then what happens if an OS is deleted, for example, when a partition is deleted or a disk containing an OS or two is physically removed? 7. I must be missing something. On the XBOX Music App, under &quotAll Music&quot from the xbox music store it shows a couple of store based playlists. For example &quotWho's Next&quot. When I select a playlist there doesn't seem to be any way to play it. It shows a random album cover that seems to be unrelated. If you click on any of the tracks XBOX Music will show the album that the track belongs to. Is this by design or am I missing a secret gesture. View the full article
  8. I use an optical keyboard and mouse from Logitech. They sent me updated software for this device, in both 34- and 68-bit versions. (My OS is 68-bit.) I downloaded both but when I try to run either one I get an error message indicating "this is not a valid Win34 application." Also, I see that the files they sent me are empty. Logitech tech support reps tell me these programs are downloaded regularly by many users and work fine. Can anyone think of what's going wrong? View the thread
  9. Does Microsoft Outlook have to be part of my mailing system? I don't use it at all, but when I try to download from Yahoo mail, it takes me right to Microsoft Outlook - wants me to run their Wizard. Can you help? View this thread
  10. My computer is asking me to download the update from the Tags SA website, because Tags Protection has been blocked. There are two possible files to download. I don't know which is best for Windows 7 and i don't want to mess anything else up. The message I received from my computer was about a blocked driver. From there I found out about the blocked protection that may create issues the next time I start up my computer. View the thread

  16. Hugo award winner, writer and current president of the SFWA John Scalzi received his new computer around December 14 and at the time was interested in the start screen and &quotWindows Store App&quot mode. You can read his initial thoughts at: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/12/14/tech-notes-on-the-xps-one-and-windows-8 One month later he is installing Stardock and writes &quotI’ve come to believe the Win 8 start screen, and the whole environment it propagates is just terrible UI for those of us who actually use their computers for work, rather than using them just to play games and get on Facebook.&quot He makes several good observations about his work-style and how the &quotWindows Store Apps&quot do not work well for him. Obviously everyone is different and their needs differ, but it makes for interesting reading. Check it out at: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2013/01/16/punting-the-start-screen/ View the full article

  19. Original title : WINDOW 7 WON'T UPDATE I am running HP Pavilion p6740f Desktop with Windows 7, 64bit, Windows Home Premium. I have never had trouble with using Windows Update. But today I have attempted to install a Windows Update [actually two] and I am getting the same results...failed. I have done nothing that would account for this problem. I did repeat the attempt to download updates several times...failed. In the fail message it says ERROR 643. I also went online to see if anyone, in google, had this same problem. Several people did, but they don't have a solution. I need some help. Thanks, Joseph View the thread

  21. Many programs in Windows XP can be run in the command prompt window (hereafter, "cmd window"). Some of these are linked to widgets, like sysdm.cpl, others run programs that display output in the cmd window, like net statistics server. I am looking for a list of programs that display output in the cmd window. Let's just limit it to the standard set of programs that come with Windows XP, if that's possible. Anyone have a link to such a list? Thanks. View this thread
  22. Hi all, I've never actually posted on a forum before, yet here I find myself. My laptop died Christmas day, and I said goodbye to the world to laptops.. I longed for the days when I had XP on an old desktop and my life with productively using computers was simple, figuring a tower set up to display thru my nice shiny 47&quot would be more suitable to my life but put too much stress on a laptop running it as dual display. That's what I wanted.... being a broke ass student who cant afford a Mac and windows vista, and even 7 machines no longer being sold, what I got was Windows 8 :( Been giving it a chance for a few weeks but it's simply not there yet.... I am terribly depressed that the technology I so desperately need to use efficiently and with ease has let me down to this point. As a university student and paid researcher I need my desktop to function and multi-task seamlessly between multiple open windows, not apps! of each: pdf's, Excel and Word... yet that's not the case here. On paper I have the biggest and baddest computer I've ever owned...yet in reality I have a operating system on steroids that models its self after a game....just great! (so not!) And I'm not saying I hate what they've &quotdeveloped&quot I just wish Microsoft as a Brand had of created something original instead of layering the pre-existing x-box operations and app-centric-ness overtop of a cut to shreds version of windows 7. Its a great concept, but it's just that: a concept! I get that its to integrate touch technology and be more fluid in transition from tablet to pc to phone but none of the attributes (need for quick changes between apps and dinky icons required by the limited screen space available to those mediums) a tablet or phone or an x-box has so its really pointless. pretty sure everyone out there doesn't just dream of owning a touchscreen pc- I've distinctly made the choice not to many a times over the past few years for this very reason of touch integrated tech not being compatible with the basic function and ease of use for academic or business applications. This system does not function, there is NO ease of use for the more professional or business minded user. Microsoft you have successfully eliminated your core users in effort to appeal to children, the elderly and the social media obsessed...Id give you credit for appealing to the art crowd with your new approach to photos but lets face we all know Mac has long held that market...so really u had the business and education sector to appeal to with your networking computer concept and you blew it. thanks for nothing, Im now taking my brand new computer to see if a person who likely is your past employer can erase all traces of this near viral operating system and go back to one of your older operating systems. I wish I had of bought a Mac, and can now safely say I will never purchase a Microsoft product again. And worse I'm computer il-literate when it comes to code so the dream I have for windows 8 is unattainable- messing with registry is not a option for me- registry errors are usually the source of my issues not the solution. I've learned to avoid anything to do with it like the plague. View the full article
  23. Obviously windows8 has an issue with shutting down the computers, my both desktop computers (both hp, one year old) and my Toshiba laptop ( 6 months old) had widows7 and never had a problem shutting down, after upgrading all of them to windows8, I am having problems, it does not happen everytime, rather every 2nd or 3rd time. Microsoft has to come up with an update for this issue, it seems that I am not the only one. any suggestions? Thanks View this thread
