I want to upgrade my laptop from win xp pro sp2 to win 8 pro. I have attempted to do this online and am told the upgrade is not supported. I assume thlis is because I need to get to win xp pro sp3. However, when I attempt to run Windows Update to see what updates are outstanding, I get the message that I cannot go to that web page with error 0x80240036. In other words I cannot update my xp pro beyond where it currently is, sp2. View this thread

HELP Please. I have Vista Home Premium SP2. I am trying to install the "Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2742597)". I have tried every technical solution posted in the Knowledge Base, including the complete deletion and reinstallation of .NET, I've tried: "Method 1: Fix MSI software update registration corruption issues". "Method 2: Repair the .NET Framework" which includes the ".NET Framework Cleanup Tool" aka "dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip". "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821) [November 2012]" I've even tried every suggestion from the first 15 pages of this community post. I am able to install every update that comes across except this one. Biggest question is, if I have all the latest .NET, do I really need this? If so, any other suggestions for me to try? When you go to start and go in to uninstall programs in a Windows 7 Home Premium Toshiba Satellite T115D-S1120 and uninstall old update programs out of the computer with Windows 7 is it removed from the Hard Drive, or is there more that you have to do to remove it from your Hard Drive? I have read that you need to download a Windows 7 update remover tool to remove it from your Hard Drive is this true? Also, by doing this will your computer become faster? View this thread

Hi guys, All the lights are blue and fine, network light blinks as it should, the 'i' light is blue, all HDD lights are blue. I can ping the server. The server shows up both in windows under the 'network' section of explorer and in OSX on the left side of the finder window. If I manually power the server off (the only way for me to power it off because it is unresponsive) and power it back on, I can RDP into the server for a brief period and accomplish a few things before it becomes unresponsive. After that period I am no longer able to RDP into the server. Clicking on the server in either the windows explorer 'network' section or the section in finder on OSX does not allow me to access the files after the period of responsiveness. I don't know what to do. The admin that posted in the thread listed above said it was a dying drive, how can I test this? If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know! Thanks! P.S. Here is an oddity. On the easystore, when the HDD access light is on, I can access the server and shares just fine. Once that light goes off, I can no longer access the drives. Is this sounding like a bad hard drive? I just ran chkdsk while I could and it is reporting no bad sectors, the Home Server SMART add-in is reporting 'pending bad sectors: 194' on the system disk. I have some extra hard drives laying around, just wondering what I should do next. And here is another oddity. When I started typing this post the HDD access light was off and the server was unresponsive. The light just kicked back on and it is still pretty unresponsive (connected to it via RDP). I cannot access the files via explorer. I am going to shut the system down (hard shutdown is the only thing I can do in this case) and leave it off until I figure out what to do next. Should I be looking at replacing the system drive? Is there a better way for me to test these drives? What other suggestions do you have? View this thread

i have tried to install the update KB2726535 and the update fails. i have tried to trouble shoot and the microsoft download to fix it and it hasnt seemed to work either. at a loss at this point as to what needs to be done to correct problem, any assistance in correcting this would be great, thank you. MSE says that I haven't run a scan in awhile and the icom is red indicating my system is potentially unprotected even though the scheduled scan ran just last night. The same thing happened 2 days ago so I ran a quick scan and the same thing happened. The program is not recognizing scans when they are done. View this thread

I ran Microsoft Fix It because 3 updates failed to install correctly and it also wiped my update history clean. On a previous post I mentioned everything is working, but maybe I may have jumped the gun because now i'm not getting any new updates at all!( with the exception of windows defender) Any ideas? I have been trying to update my laptop with the above update but consistently get a failure notification. The update downloads and looks as if it is installing but then the error message comes up (code 80073718). I select the option 'get help with this error' which takes me to troubleshooting the updater ( I ran it as administrator). The troubleshooter found an error and repaired it so I tried to update again but yet again got the same error code and the update is still not installed. I have checked my internet connection in case something was interrupted but the connection is fine, I have tried both wifi and Ethernet. I have searched the Microsoft pages but can't find anything about this error. I installed windows 8 as an upgrade to Vista a couple of weeks ago. View this thread

I contracted a virus called "The FBI" virus. While removing this virus I lost my operating system (WINDOWS VISTA) I was wanting to replace it. I do have the original Product Key. I set up my wallpaper with a photo which was fine for a while, always on my desktop and I could go straight to it, suddenly a gremlin came and now I have a blue windows screen with an administrators key in the center which I have to click before I go to my desk top. It does not accept a double click to give me an option to get rid of it, so I redid my photo theme, but it is still the same. Fully updated, xp pro, ie8 when clicking start, all programs, windows update, goes to microsoft updates with compatibility view when connecting online to microsoft updates gets microsoft updates without compatibility view can I change the path for my start, all programs, windows updates to be microsoft updates without compatibiliy view? edit: have reinstalled os with a sp3 slipstreamed cd. edit2: no websites listed in my compatibility view settings. I lost my connection to my printer. I uninstalled the printer &amp now I can not reinstall. I can not get past the USB cable hookup of the install. The problem started when I tried to print a document. I have tried a new USB cable, used a different usb port, up dated my printer driver &amp did a check for up dates to my PC. My Windows 7 desktop has 239 GB of files of which 174 GB are in the Users category and 69.6 GB are in my Desktop which contains mostly duplicate files. I didn't understand the questionable duplication which the Desktop imposes until I realized that the reason I couldn't find recent files was because they were not saved in the right directory of the same name. Why does Microsoft not fully explain the difference between My Documents and Desktop Documents. What a total waste of time managing my files!!!!! Bruce Johnson . View the thread
