  2. I am helping an elderly neighbor with his HP Compaq desktop computer running Windows XP SP3. His computer locked up with the FBI scam malware. I used Defender Offline to gain back control (2 viruses were found and rremoved). I then downloaded and ran Malwarebytes which found several more viruses. Finally, he had installed AVAST Free on this machine and I scanned with that and it found even more things to remove. Then I noticed that the AVAST had been installed over MSE. I uninstalled AVAST using the AVAST removal tool, and uninstalled MSE using Control Panel/Add-Remove. I ran One Care Cleaner. I also ran the McAfee and Norton removal tools, just to be sure. I reinstalled MSE, but MSE could not turn on the Windows Firewall. After reading some Posts in this forum on this issue, I tried to turn on Windows Firewall through Security Center. I got the message that "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings". I checked services and found NO Windows Firewall listed there. Not sure where it is. Also, fyi, it appears Windows Update is not working either. I get an error message when I click EXPRESS to install updates ("The website has encountered a problem..."). YIKES. Looks like a real mess. Any suggestions on next steps? Thx, Mike T in VA. View this thread

Getting this rundll error upon startup: c:/users/name/appdata/local/libmapdb/usbwebpath.dllHave tried a number of fixes (1) cmd.exe - run as administrator - sfc/scannow (2) wisefixer download (3) ccleaner download(4) confirmed I don't have the World of Warcraft game (5) ran system file checker tool () RegCure download. Still getting the error. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 2007, Service Pack 2 (32 bit) on an HP Pavilion laptop. I've been freeing up C drive space over the past week, going from only 4gb's free to 26gb's free. I've been getting this rundll error for over 6 months, maybe longer. Can't find much online about this exact error. Would appreciate help figuring out why I'm getting this and how I can permanently get it removed?? Thanks! View this thread

  6. Hi all, I created 2 tasks in task scheduler to run at user logon: one that starts explorer.exe (to go to the desktop and skip the start page), and one that starts the RDP client in public mode. Even if I put a delay on the RDP, it always starts behind the explorer window. So I then tried some switches for explorer (/m, /MIN, mode SHOWMINIMIZED), also went in the user context's properties of file explore and selected &quotstart minimized&quot and nothing works... I also tried all these switches in the run box and they don't work there either. Am I missing something? View the full article
  7. Hi, I own a Dell Inspiron desktop computer. The original hard drive is failing so I bought a new one, same specs. I didn't think I'd be able to factory restore to the new hard drive, so I installed Windows 7 onto the new drive from a separate valid install CD I had. So... with the old and new drives in my system, when I boot up, I got the screen asking which OS I want to boot into. The default is the old one, so I always have to select the new install and continue. If I remove the old drive and put the new drive into its place, I get the "bootmgr is missing" error. If I leave the drives the way they are, and change the Bios to boot from the new drive first, I get the same error.I followed instructions here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/windows-7-bootmgr-is-missing-resolved-using-winre/8bb148bc-8035-4847-9696-888f7a0a9720 and I trying repairing the new Windows 7, to running the various DOS commands listed. Still nothing.I want to retire the old hard drive and use only the new drive, but can't at this time. Any help is appreciated. View the thread

  9. My laptop has a 40GB hyard drive running XP SP3 and is continually updated. I use well known tools to keep unwanted files and programs off the sytemn. Over the past 5 years my hard drive has steadily filled up and now paging rates have escalated and I must do something about this. I am suspicious about .NET and Silverlight which may have caused system bloat. I would like to remove both but wonder (a) whether this will cause noticeable problems to me, a simple user, (b) the frequency of usage by websites and applications with which I interact, and © whether this is an advisable way forward? I am a Pensioner and seek to avoid replacement of my HDD, laptop or otherwise spend on unwarranted upgrades. Or, should I simply reinstall a fresh copy of XP? View this thread

  16. All libraries &quotis no longer working&quot after few hours of PC is on. Delete-restore didn't help. Steps: Turn on PC Libraries &quotis no longer working&quot. //&quotBody text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account.&quot Press delete libraries. And restore default libraries. Take 10 minutes to add all folders. All works fine. Wait few hours (&gt8) or few restarts and it's again like on the image number 3. I've &quotDelete-restore&quot 4 times already for last week. Windows 8 Pro x64 English (clean setup, not an upgrade). This bug crashes libraries starting from the installing of Windows 8. 19. Hello,Since, apparently, buying an upgrade to w8 pro is pointless when you have an enterprise w7 on enterprise key (and don't know the key) AND you are a system builder and plan to upgrade your PC sometime in the future after installing W8, I have thought of a... workaround.I have a windows xp machine I plan to upgrade to w8. Can I install this windows xp on another machine and then upgrade it with another copy of windows 8 upgrade? (so essentially I have one license of windows xp I want to use TWICE to install an upgrade to windows 8, on two separate PCs).Thanks in advance.PS. seriously, it is surprising I have not been able to find this question in the database... and the earlier one too! Any help would be greatly appreciated. View this thread
  21. About a week ago I noticed that Windows update was constantly trying to download four updates these wereKB 2679255KB 2724197KB 2676562KB 2393802Each time they seemed to have successfully updated, yet the next day there they were again. Yesterday however Windows checked for updates and it said 'Windows can't check for updates' It also says that I have never installed any updates! I am also getting the error code 80070002. I have looked in various forums for help but everything I have tried has failed to correct the error. I tried system restore but the oldest restore point I had was not far enough back unfortunately. Could anyone suggest what I could try to repair the Windows update please? View this thread

  25. I've an older computer with a single hard drive that had been partitioned. The OS (XP SP3) is on the C: drive, but the C: drive was only allocated 10gb on a 120gb hard disk. I deleted the D: partition and made it unallocated space, but Diskpart still will not extend the C: drive at all. According to the MS site, Diskpart will not extend a volume on a Dynamic disk in XP, only a Basic disk. So, I checked and C: is formatted as a basic disk. I then made all the other unallocated disk space a partition and reformatted it as a Basic disk. Then I deleted the partition and attempted once again to extend C:. Diskpart will still not extend the volume, even when following the Diskpart instructions explicitly. So, I'm now considering making the unallocated space a partition again, then ghosting the C:drive onto the new partition and deleting the C:drive. There are no programs other than the OS on the C: drive worth saving. I'm attempting to make the hard drive usable so I can sell this computer. Any other way I can attempt to extend the C: volume onto the entire drive? Is my drive ghosting idea worth a shot? View this thread
