  1. I purchased the Win 7 X15-65733 product and using a new 8GB USB memory stick and followed the instructions to create a bootable ISO. The stick formatted and the program transferred until 100% when the progress bar turned red. It said something like data transferred but not able to get bootfile so ISO not bootable. I clicked Start Again and the stick formatted again but it said We are unable to copy your files, check your USB and ISO files and try again. The same unable to copy files report recurred. Help please. View the thread

  3. Hello, I have been having trouble for a while installing the following updates: KB2742592 / KB2656351 / KB2736428 / KB2600217 / KB2487367 Each time I turn off my laptop its tries and fails to install these updates and each time brings up the error code 643 in the update history. I have twice run the FixIt diagnostic program and this has found issues and fixed them. However the updates still fail to install and still try to install every time I turn off my pc. I have also tried updating the drivers etc and still this has not helped. Now I am experiencing problems each time I turn on my laptop. When I turn on my laptop (after logging in) the screen remains black for about a minute (whilst programs such as steam can load in the background), when the display finally appears the icons take a while to load after the toolbar at the bottom. After this has loaded the 'loading' light on my laptop is on constantly for ~3/4 minutes and my CPU usage rises to about 40% (sometimes up to 60) even though I have closed all other non-essential processes and no programs are running. I am normally unable to open any programs during this time other than the task manager. However during this 'loading' period if I try to open a windows window (for example the update history or my documents) these open but immediately become unresponsive and then 'windows explorer' becomes unresponsive and has to be restarted. As an additional note once during this loading time I tried to un-install an adobe program, but was unable as "an installation is already in progress" however no other programs/processes were running. Are there any ways to fix the updates not installing? And could this be the cause of my laptop loading so slowly each time? Thank you for your help, Matthew View this thread

  7. Hi, Hope the title explains issue, in short. O/S is XP Home SP3. Security Patches are installed and up to date. Anti Virus is up to date. Security scans (including Microsoft on-line) conform no virus, malware, etc (unless something is hiding itself real good!)The long version of the problem is as follows:I can't access the Windows Update server as usual (it hangs page while searching at the active x check) using either Help And Support Page or IE8 Tools. Task Manager says - Not Responding although IE8 is running ok in the background and the rest of the Help and Support Services are running OK. The usual M/S Update url's are listed in my IE8 OK Sites. This is a genuine XP and the Update Agent is checked as being installed.I have tried the automated Windows Update Fix It Tool (several times) and it doesn't fix although each time it says Windows Update Components must be repaired - it then applies the repair and (after reboot) the problem remains.Interestingly, automatic updates seem to be working. I know this because, after checking the Update Service is enabled and the Registry Key was in the right order and in the right place, i decided to try resetting the IE8 Advanced settings back to default to see if I was connected automatically to the Update Server for the latest Critical Updates for IE8 - and I was! So 2 updates were downloaded and installed. But, it didn't solve the problem.Windows Update has been running OK for me for years but since the recent issues regarding the so called Zero Day problem with IE 6, 7 and 8 I ran one of the Fix It (Workaround Tools) that Microsoft posted as a temporary "fix" before the patch was made available, which I then downloaded and installed. It seems to me the Update problem occurred after I installed these patch/fixes.I have CVE-2012-4969 listed in my Installed Programs and I believe this is the FixIt Patch repair from microsoft and (trust) this is not the nasty itself that it relates to!Seems to me a setting has got corrupted somewhere, somehow. I have run sfc /scannow but this didn't fix. I have flushed the dns but that didnt fix it either.I am wondering if the IE8 security settings are too high and its this that is blocking the active x script so I set them all to default and that didn't fix either. Also, owing to the recent Java issues (as yet unresolved as I understand) Java was uninstalled a few weeks ago - does the Windows Update require Java? If so this could be the answer but perhaps someone reading this might confirm and (please) offer some idea as to what might be wrong and what else I might try.Ok, so if the Automated Update Service is working you might ask why worry? Well, 1) I wonder why Manual Update has stopped working and seems not to want to be fixed by the means I've tried so for, 2) this makes me think is there some installed program blocking manual access that could also be malicious and 3) because as its bust I do want to fix it and also to get Custom Updates.I look forward to replies as I don't know what else to try.Kind regards. 10. I know it sounds like a stupid question but last time I updated my graphics drivers, they gave me a huge problem. I have the amd radeon hd 7770 video card and they want me to update to 13.1. I have read that 13.1 gave users a few bsod problems. View the thread
  11. Hi Guys, Just wondering if anyone else has seen this. Windows 8 boots ok. Logs in ok and start screen displays ok. I can run apps from the start screen without any problems. If however, I launch the desktop, it's blank. No icons, no wallpaper and nothing at all on the task band. Right click on the 'start button' I can access the usual stuff. Set command within cmd shows that the path to the desktop is correct Looking in resource manager shows that explorer is waiting on a service (WCT) but I can only get a pid for svchost. Has anyone seen the sort of thing before? Does anyone have any quick solution? This is the home desktop that the wife and kids have access to and there is a growing amount of decent in the ranks. If I am unable to resolve this soon, I'm going to wipe and rebuild. Cheers, Jay... View the full article

  14. Before I begin, I have searched for answers for this problem and the main thread people seem to point to as the answer (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/zh/w7itprogeneral/thread/3175f930-84f6-49f7-bccb-2964ea85d050) applies to Windows 7 and doesn't work for Windows 8. I have a Windows Server 2012 Essentials domain with several clients connected to the Essentials server as domain members. One of the computers is used by my daughter who was previously using Windows 7 with Windows Live Family Safety before I upgraded the server from WHS 2011 to WSE 2012. After domain joining the client, the Family Safety settings disappeared from Control Panel. This was resolved by enabling the GPO setting Make Family Safety Available to Domain Computers (I paraphrased the name of the setting). After a gpupdate, the machine now states User Accounts and Family Safety in Control Panel instead of just User Accounts and the Family Safety settings are available. When trying to enable Family Safety for her account, it is not listed. The only account listed is the Administrator local account and none of the domain accounts are listed. I found a blog post online which suggests a workaround (http://stevejenkins.com/blog/2010/01/using-windows-live-family-safety-on-a-windows-domain/) but this fix only works for Windows 7 as adding the users as local administrators doesn't populate them into the Family Safety user list. So it looks as though Windows 8 only will allow you to enable Family Safety for local accounts which are connected to Microsoft IDs which are in turn linked to Windows Live Family Safety? Doing this though means that the child has to login with their Windows Live password and not a simple password setup for them on the internal network. The Windows Live account password in question is a complex one which she doesn't know to stop her accessing mail, messenger and other services. The ID exists purely to allow the application of Family Safety. My current options therefore are to downgrade the machine back to Windows 7 where the features will work as needed (not ideal) or log her on with a local account and make the Windows Live password simpler for her to use herself (insecure, exposes more features to her than needed and takes away some of the features of WSE 2012 such as Folder Redirection and File History). Has anyone else experienced or tried Family Safety on Windows 8 domain clients or managed to get it working? Whilst I understand that WSE 2012 is primarily designed to replace SBS, with the end of life of WHS, it is also the successor to WHS. I think the use of a domain is spot on: Who wants to manage separate users and passwords on all your household machines, but not being able to use Family Safety in this combination makes it quite ineffective for the home pro users wanting the latest features of Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8. 23. I have an update to install &quotSecurity Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2785220)&quot which continues to fail. 80073712 is the error code I get. Ive had Microsoft trying to fix it remotely on my computer, so far it has taken up about 4 hours of my time sitting on the phone trying to sort this out. So far, no luck. Ive googled this topic and it seems I am not the only one with this problem. Myself and the Microsoft technician have tried every trick under the sun still without luck. My question to Microsoft is, what are you doing about this? If your own people cant figure it out, how can I? Please sort this out urgently because I am sick of failing updates and the inconvenience is unacceptable. View this thread
