  1. Rather than changing out the hard drive, I doubt that is the problem anyway, set the computer to not restart automatically when a system error happens. You can do that in safe mode in advanced computer properties. Once you set that the next time it reboots you'll get the bluescreen with the error code.
  2. This is probably a driver issue. The restarts are probably blue screens. Look in the system logs for any errors generated during these restarts. My bet is the graphics driver is causing the problem since it doesn't happen in safe mode when the full driver isn't loaded.
  3. Thanks for this one. When I saw elasticsearch I had to do some checking. I run a FreeBSD server with elasticsearch for site search here. Wanted to make sure I had everything up to date and checked the security lists to see if there was any vulnerablities in it.
  4. You set up a user account and use security preferences to restrict access. I set up all desktops at work so the user can access all the software they need and the internet. They can't download and install anything or access any other files or settings on the box.
  5. Any locks would be a limited user account on the system and wouldn't affect a clean install of the OS. If you are trying to do an upgrade install it would fail from that user account. I assume you chose custom install, removed all the partitions and then formatted to do a clean install. It could be a driver issue. Specifically the sata driver. It could be a bios setting. Try setting the sata mode to AHCI. If it's in that mode try IDE. I seen this a couple years a couple years ago when I was troubleshooting an issue like this. When you get error prompt do this: If none of that works download the driver for the sata controller, put it on a disk and use the option to load it when partitioning the drive.
  6. That is the default background in Yosemite, the version of OSX I have installed. I haven't installed El Capitan yet because Intellipoint doesn't work with it and Microsoft probably isn't going to update it any time soon. I have a new Logitech MX Master on the way and once I change to it I'll install El Capitan. One other note. I have a late 2009 model Mac Mini that came with Snow Leopard. I am upgrading to El Capitan now so I can sell it. If this was a Windows box running XP, which was what would have came pre-installed in 2009, I would have to pay for the latest version.
  7. I would expect IE 11 to be gone soon too. The new browser leaves a lot to be desired so I hope they wait at least a couple years to do away with IE 11.
  8. Since I switched my wife has also. She is 1 week into it. She had big problems with Windows 8 and 10 loading the software she needs for school. I told her to give OSX a chance to see if it was any better. She used my box a couple days and said it's time to switch. Went and bought her an iMac and since she works away from home got her a Macbook too. She is happy. Everything she had problems with now just works.
  9. I was getting annoyed with Windows 10. There are certain things that changed that seemed to be a step backwards. Doing little things was harder than it was in any previous version. The revamped control panel is the worst. Just trying to find one setting takes forever. I found I had to use the search feature to find the things I used to be able to go right too. Since I'm speaking about search, since Microsoft decided to move so many things, it leaves a lot to be desired. I'd search for something and either get the wrong results or no results at all. Start menu, while I liked it at first, is a mess. Since it takes forever to find the app you want to use I would pin it to the start menu. My start menu was an eyesore. I could go on for hours with the things I have grown to dislike in Windows 10, but, this is about OSX. I found that I was using my old G5 Mac Pro more and more for my everyday tasks. There were times when I wouldn't even switch over to my Windows box. My G5 is a 10 year old PPC box and not compatible with newer versions of OSX and some of the newer software I needed didn't work on it. My wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said a new Mac Pro. It arrived early she gave it to me. I set it up on the KVM and used the migration software to move my stuff from the old G5. Once that was done I used the migration assistant to move my files off my Windows 10 box. I've never went from Mac to Windows so I don't know if you can even do that with Windows and if you could I don't know how well it would work. The software worked exceptionally well for me. It took me a few weeks to get the box set up with everything I need. I had to find a Mac equivalent for all my software. It's now complete and I am using OSX all the time now. Yesterday I imported my Windows 10 install into Parallels so I could get ready to sell the box. The importer imported everything and all my Windows programs will be available to me should I need them. In my old Windows box I had a #rd gen I7 CPU and 32Gigs of memory. At times, especially when I was compiling code, the thing would bog down and take forever. In fact after I told my wife which Mac Pro to order I seconded guessed myself on the specs. I only ordered it with 12Gigs although I went with the 12 core Xeon 3.2 CPU. To my surprise the first time I ran the C compiler it whizzed right through and I was able to do other things while it was doing it's thing. I have to say I was surprised by that. In the future, since I like to tinker, I'll add some more memory. Not to say I won't go back to Windows in the future. If they release an OS as elegant and resource friendly as OSX is I will switch back. I still like Windows. All my servers are Windows. I just had to do what I thought was best for me. Here is a screenshot of my desktop.
  10. I knew it would only be a matter of time before node.js was used for this.
  11. I read about this earlier. Steam says it's not too bad. I disagree with what they said on their site.
  12. Apple has clearly said all along that this update had features specifically for the iPhone 6 and 6s to take advantage of the new hardware. I wonder how far this will go.
  13. Each hardware component has a unique ID. Even if you have 2 computers that are exactly the same with same hardware configuration you couldn't activate the install without a call to Microsoft. Windows XP, the first with activation, and Windows 7 will trigger activation if multiple components are changed at the same time. It knows the components were changed by looking at the hardware ID's. As Nev says Windows 8 and above does things differently so you'd have to call in to activate.
  14. I've done it hundreds of times. Never had a problem. Put new drive in. Clone old drive to new drive. Boot from new drive. I will either take out the old drive after first boot or change the cabling so new drive is first in boot change. Can also do that in bios.
  15. I use EaseUS. It's free and easy to use.
  16. You have it right. A change of hard drive will not trigger an activation as other hardware is the same.
  17. Merry Christmas to you also.
  18. Just changing to an SSD shouldn't trigger re-activation. If it does it will work the same way as before. Activate on first boot.
  19. It's about time. I hated that I couldn't view some of the videos.
  20. I tried this on an uBuntu install I have on my dev server. Sure enough dropped me right into rescue shell. Doesn't seem to be a patch yet for uBuntu.
  21. It looks to me that those drivers are supplied by Windows. I have seen this many times. The chipset and pci drivers are reliant on the Windows builds.
  22. I just bought software to clone my Windows install for OSX called Winclone. If I had know about this I could have used what was built in to Windows 10 to create a backup image.
  23. The worst of them all is any flashlight with the exception of the default app that comes with IOS.
  24. At the top of my list is network issues. It seems no one knows how to connect to one. When people move from one location to another they call me because they can't get internet. I give them laptops that will auto connect to all our locations yet they still have problems. Second on the list is freeing up space on the NAS for each employees documents that they share. Some users like to store their personal photos and videos. They then call me when they get an error that they have no more space. I am in the process of rewriting the section of the handbook that deals with this issue.
  25. I didn't realize it was this bad. Most Linux distros are distributed via torrents and that's about the only time I use the client.
