My Bitdefender Virus Vulnerability scan tells me that I need an important Windows update: Microsoft Silverlight (KB2814124). However, no matter what I try, this update fails to download and install. I've used the Microsoft &quotFIX IT&quot tool and it seems to be correcting things (registry changes, etc.) , but when I run Microsoft updates again, this update fails to install. Is it possible that I may have inadvertently uninstalled a Microsoft Silverlight update when I uninstalled some junk programs from the &quotUninstall or Change a Program&quot? I recently installed PowerISO and it has taken over my physical DVD drive so I cannot use it. The drive does not show up in Windows Explorer. The drive shows up in hardware settings, but with the note that the driver has been disabled and another driver is providing the functionality. There are issues all over the net on this WRT to PowerISO (wish I had seen these before I loaded it) but no real concrete solutions. I have tried uninstalling the device, reloading drivers and even bought a new DVD drive and installed it but it comes up with the same issue. None of the MS fixes work. I did a complete refresh of BIOS and CMOS to no avail. The drives do not show up in the BIOS settings but do show (with issues) in Hardware settings. I also removed PowerISO, which did nothing. I then re-installed it and changed the Virtual Drive setting to &quotnone&quot thinking that this was taking over my physical drives. Nothing. So I have uninstalled it again. View the thread

Hello, when I boot up my netbook asus 1201n, Windows 8 pro starts as usual. But after showing the loginscreen I get an alternating black and grey screen. I can hear (and see at the led) the hard drive working, but besides the alternating screens, noting happens. After days of determining the problem (and reinstalling Windows 5 times) I found update KB2809289 to be the cause. All other recent updates can be installed without problems.I ignore this specific update for now, but would like to install it for security reasons. Also I am afraid to install coming updates as I don't know whether it will be causing problems or not. I found it particularly difficult to restore Windows when this problem arose (especially without the possibility to start Windows 8 in safe-mode). I have to reinstall Windows every time when I encounter those alternating screens, so that's a lot of hassle. So a solution for this problem would be greatly appreciated. View this thread

The last two nights windows has tried to apply an auto update to my window Vista ultimate system, the system has been functioning fine but after I shut down the system and the update is downloaded which seems to go fine, when bringing up the system and allowing the update to configure, it never completes, it gets to a point where there is a background image and the cursor is active but noting else is visible or able to be accessed. After waiting for hours, my only option is to cut the power, enter safe more and restore the system to the state prior to the update. What should I do? View this thread

On my b/up drive (E) I have a program called "urexe" from unknown publisher. I have had "exe" problems in the past. Following a recent windows update my Aero desktop stopped working. If I run the diagnostic tool it tells me Windows Desktop Manager (WDM) is disabled. What I have done so far: Run a full system scan - Norton 2013 - No issues Re-run the Windows performance tool - 7.6 score Re-started Desktop Windows Manager (DWM) and Themes from the Services tool many times - Checked it is correctly set at Automatic Checked the registry setting for DWM - All normal, matches my laptop which has no issues. Updated to the latest NVidia driver for Win 7 Ultimate 64 Bit - Even though old driver was fine until the Windows update Checked my profile - no issues Logged off and on again as Administrator - same problem Rolled back to several restore points in the past - same problem Anyone have any other ideas - Things were fine and had been since I installed Win7 until the Windows update, since then no WDM View this thread
