  2. Windows IT Pro An often irreverent look at some of this week's other news, including the return of the WordPerfect suit, Google and Facebook apparently vying for Skype, the dumbest acquisition rumor I've heard in a long time, the battle of the Microsoft and Apple co-founders, a court shoots down Google's attempt to halt Android openness suit, the reports of email's death are apparently exaggerated, Hotmail comes out on top in webmail duel, Windows Phone Marketplace goes down for the count, and Sony apologizes. ... Hello everyone! Here's my situation: I have this windows server 2008 running really nicely. I've created all the roaming profils and their base data on the server so that they can log from any computer in the domain. (i'm pretty sure you knew that but it's just in case you might ask). I want to know if it is possible for the users to have their informations, mails, so and so forth from outlook save on the server, more precisely, in their roaming files. Let me give you a situation. The front desk is having an issue with a client that is saying that he sent an email to the superviser. So the superviser comes down and open his session on the front desk computer to s…

  6. Windows IT Pro For years, Intel's devotion to Moore's Law--which, in simplified form, suggests that the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles every two years--has resulted in ever thinner microprocessors, the latest of which are down to 32 nm in thickness. But this week, Intel announced that it is now increasing the number of transistors on its chips by growing in a third dimension. And according to Intel, these so-called 3D chips are a truly revolutionary new approach. ... View the full article

We are currently using Windows Server 2008 in our office. Our local IT guy has very little experience in servers and thus am looking for additional help. We currently have a couple staff working from home full time and are using a third party application for remote access. This software does not allow access to their microsoft outlook nor to the computer drives (c: drive etc) while connecting remotely. Is there any way we can set up their homes so that they can access the server and their local drives as well as have access to our exchange server?

  14. Windows IT Pro During his keynote address at Blackberry World Conference on Tuesday, RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis introduced an unexpected guest: Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who recently allied with struggling smart phone giant Nokia in a bid to make the Blackberry and other rivals obsolete. So what was this appearance all about? Is Microsoft having second thoughts about its own smart phone platform, Windows Phone? Or is this just business as usual? ... View the full article

  16. Hi all, I am trying to use an external Lacie Biggest Quadra 2.7TB Raid5 drive connected via USB2 to a w2k8 stn server. I initialized the raid5 drive through the unit (assuming this is hardware driven) and with the drive as GPT try to format it through disk manager or diskpart and the format will not complete. I connected the drive to my w7x64 pc and I can format the drive with no problem. I can then connect it to the w2k8 machine and it recognizes the drive. I can create a shared folder and save/delete to it locally or from networked pc's. But at some point after initiating a w7 backup or data transfer from networked pc's, the drive becomes inaccessible w/ w2k8 lo…

  20. Windows IT Pro But there were some noteworthy cloud-related failures last week that speak to a much wider problem we're going to experience more and more moving forward. 24. Started by Jisamaniac,

I suppose the problem started when the users keep disconnecting randomly every now again, this past month. I checked the logs and the DNS disconnects every 12 hours at 3:00 AM and 3:00 PM, then the AD is looking for the DNS. The DNS, automatically restarts within 10 minutes, so downtime is not as bad as it could have been. The funny thing is the defragmentation happens EXACTLY at the same time. Defragmentation is turned off when I checked it by the old school way "C drive, right click, properties, etc." SO my question is 1. Why would defragmentation cause the DNS to crash on a windows 2008 R2 server? 2. How do I go about fixing this/other suggestions? Thanks …
