Windows IT Pro Confirming rumors that began blossoming late last week, Microsoft this morning announced that it will purchase Internet communications firm Skype for $8.5 billion. The software giant lauded the deal's potential to increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications for both consumers and enterprises, but let's be clear here: This deal is about one thing and one thing only. And that is to keep Skype out of the hands of competitors like Facebook and Google. ... View the full article

Bulletin Severity Rating:Important - This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft PowerPoint. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted PowerPoint file. An attacker who successfully exploited either of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. Installing and configuring Office File Validation (OFV) to prevent the opening of suspicious files blocks the attack vectors for exploiting the vulnerabilities d…

Bulletin Severity Rating:Critical - This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user received a specially crafted WINS replication packet on an affected system running the WINS service. By default, WINS is not installed on any affected operating system. Only customers who manually installed this component are affected by this issue. View the full article

So I recently started a new virtual server cluster, including two DCs, an IIS server and a File share server. First three flew through the installs perfectly, but I cannot add the fourth one to the domain. I have tried everything I can think of, changing the computer name and description, pinging the DCs, changing the DNS server entry and the DNS order, removing and adding the IIS server from the domain to ensure the DC is valid, yet nothing seems to work properly. The DCs are working, the IIS server can add and remove fine, yet the file sharing server just keeps failing on the authorization to join the domain. I have run out of ideas and am reaching out to the commun…

Windows IT Pro In the tech industry, the current industry superpower always believes that it won't succumb to the same mistakes as its once-dominant predecessor. Microsoft, thus, was eager to prove it wouldn't become the next IBM, and of course it became just that over the next decade. And Google has publicly stated its own goal to avoid becoming the next Microsoft. ... View the full article

Hi, I have just installed Windows Server 2008 R2 as a file sharing server for 20 staff... and also to be used as a .Net testing/dev server. Can someone kindly tell me how I should be setting up user accounts & groups for file sharing? I would like to create file sharing only users, but I can only seem to create new users with a desktop user account on the actual server? Thanks in advance for any help. H.Risley

Have a weird issue all of a sudden. I have an administrative log in for my 2008 domain controller. All of a sudden today I cannot log in at the console or through remote desktop. I can log in from a workstation and access all shares, including administrative shares. I attempted to log in as administrator and since I haven't done this in a while it prompted me to change the password. I changed the administrator password and now can not log in as administrator either. I'm baffled.

Hello! I am planning to programmatically IP ban (Windows Firewall inbound rule via netsh) all players who get banned from the game server running on my root because so far quite a few people got angry and attacked it (mainly simple DoS attacks). Can this lead to performance problems in the long run? Have you ever blocked out a thousand remote IP addresses (not a range)? Thanks in advance!

I just installed windows server 200 R2 , but now so many questions are wandering in my mind, and hopefully i can get some answers through this post. If i may say, windows server is a server operating system that is used to control, allocate network resources ? I have a good understanding in Networking technology , but i am new to this part of Networking. so here are my questions : 1) Do you need more than one computer in order to use windows server ? 2) Does the computer need to be connected in some sort of networking device such as switch or a router ? …

Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows Today it is consumers, not businesses, that are determining what technology is important. And as these consumers embrace entertaining hardware like the iPhone and iPad, and simple and free web services like those from Google and Facebook, they are also turning towards technology to solve life's other problems. Here are three areas in which I've found interesting technological solutions. ... View the full article
