Hi, I just got myself a VPS server 2008 RC2. I have added a domain role to the server. Then I have a Windows XP laptop at home. I am trying to connect this laptop to the domain. At this point I am using Wifi connection, so I know, that I won't be able to log in to domain after computer restart. I can ping the server from my laptop. Also I have changed the DNS configuration, so the server's ip is first on my list. Also I have created an account in Domain controller for my laptop) But I can't add laptop to the servers domain. It is giving me error: "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." (error code 0x0000007B ERROR_INVALID_NAME) …

Hey there! I'm new to the forum, and I'm glad I found this resource, as I'm going to be learning server 2008 r2 and setting up a server... I have a few basic questions about networking it properly so that I can see it from the outside. I have the basic concept, I think, but it's not working at the moment... this is how I had it set up currently: 1- Business line from Cox with an external static IP, which I believe is using IP passthrough. 2- Linksys E1000 router, configured to receive static IP, with the following information (supplied by cox): Internet IP address: 98.190.168.244 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.240 Default gateway: 98.190.158.241 DNS1: 68.105.28.1…

Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows This week, Microsoft held a formal press conference at which it revealed many (but, as it turns out, not all) major new consumer-oriented feature that will come in this version, called "Mango" internally. And when we combine that with some business-oriented Mango features we learned about the previous week at TechEd, we suddenly have a more complete picture of where Microsoft is taking its stellar new mobile platform. Windows IT Pro At a press conference in New York on Tuesday, Microsoft stepped up its reveal on the second major version of Windows Phone, codenamed "Mango" and now scheduled for early fall. However, the software giant fell well short of the full disclosure that many (including me) were expecting, instead claiming that the release would include "500 new features" while only divulging perhaps a dozen of them. What's with all the secrecy? ... View the full article

Windows IT Pro With the US government quietly agreeing to cease its antitrust oversight of Microsoft earlier this month, you may have assumed that the software giant's legal wrangling over its one-time market power was a thing of the past. Well, not yet it isn't: This week, Microsoft revealed that it will appeal an "excessive" $1.35 billion fine that was imposed on it by over-zealous European Union antitrust regulators in 2008. ... Windows IT Pro Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer appeared on stage at his company's Developer Forum in Tokyo, Japan on Monday and seemed to spontaneously spurt out a few interesting details about the next version of Windows, called Windows 8 internally, and the next version of Windows Phone 7, known currently as "Mango." The Windows 8 revelations are particularly interesting, coming as they do just days after Microsoft issued a stern warning to its partner Intel. ... View the full article

Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows Last week, I set out to write an overview of the Microsoft announcements and interesting products from TechEd 2011. The resulting article, What I've Learned (So Far) at TechEd 2011, was thus somewhat of a failure since it really covered only two products: MultiPoint Server 2011 and Windows Phone 7 "Mango." Sorry about that. But here's a wrap-up of the other interesting news from TechEd 2011. And as you'll soon discover, there was a lot more happening at the show. ... View the full article

I am running a 2008 Server as a DC with DNS and manually set the IP address on LAN #1 to 192.168.1.150. After rebooting the server, the network connection is showing connected but when I click on the Details button, it shows a 169 IP address and the Default Gateway is now blank. I am able to use the LAN #2 temporarily. Anyone having the same problem?
