HI All I have issues with the VSS writer on Windows server 2008 R2. Basically whenever a backup runs it fails with error backup in process. When i check the vss writers, i notice that the Microsoft exchange writer is in "waiting for completion" state. This is a exchange 2010 server and is thepassive nodes. I am using networker with exchnage binaries to backup the passive copies. NOTE i have restart the server this does change the VSS writer(s) to a stable state, however when the backup runs again it fails with same error and the writer goes back in "waiting for completion" state. Can anyone help

  3. I'm pretty new to servers but have a fair understanding of windows, I have an old desktop that I installed this on a few days ago. At random intervals of use (anywhere from hours to 5 minutes) the server becomes completely unresponsive and the screen appears as shown in the attached file. It seems to happen more often while trying to download and install windows updates but that way just be a coincidence. System: Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2 X64 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ NVidia GeForce 6100-M9 2GB OCZ Memory Seagate 1TB ST310005 I have updated the mainboard drivers and am attempting to get completely up to date with windows updates, but the going is slow given t…

i am installing computers in a network. i am tasked with setting up a KMS service to get let the new pc's, which are installed through an image. i have used the script and a key (server 2008 and a win7 one) to register it and activated it through the /ato command. i do not find any information on how a client pc would react when i add them to the network. do i need to enter the kms key to that client pc also. in the product key section or should it acquire some code from the kms service so i do no longer need to enter any product key each time i install a pc and add it to the network? some info seems to indicate i need to use the kms key as a product key on…

I will be installing several Windows 2008 servers and know how to install Active Directory. My question is because these servers will be in the environment of a state department of corrections and a few users will be inmates who need to be restricted as to what they can access as compared to staff users, I am curious what you might suggest: Should I setup multiple forests? A separate or multiple OUs or just a simply inmate user group and define in that group what inmate accounts can access and NOT include inmate accounts in any domain groups? Thanks,

  7. I built a new Dell server running 64 bit Windows 2008 R2 server OS on it and I am having problems with my XP workstations. The work stations do not always map the drive connecting to the 2008 shared folder, when it does map the drive the users can access the data but at intermittent times the server drive will disappear on them and not be accessible. When this has happened they are unable to do a run to the server by name or IP, if I reboot the server access is restored but this happens to often to be rebooting the server all the time. Windows7 PCs do not have the same problem and always have access to the shared folders on this server so it is just the XP workstations. O…

Hi guys, Some advice please. I have bought a copy of Windows server 2008 from Phoenix Software for our school and i had to down load it as well as the licences etc. I have burnt the files to disk but the server with a new hard drive wont let me boot from CD/DVD. I had downloaded the free trial and that lets me boot from disk. Am i doing something wrong? My other question is now i have the correct product code for Server 2008 can i put that in on the trial version to make it a full working OS? Thanks for looking at my problem guys. Scott

hi every one. I have two major problem with my windows server 2008 that I couldn't find any solution for them. MY first problem is: I've installed SQL server 2008 and ran an ASP.net Application (I have wrote the application) on IIS 6. For debugging the program also I have installed Visual studio 2010. While running the application on visual studio I have no problem to access my database on my SQL server but on the IIS my website can not access the data base. I have checked my Connection string and every thing which link my site to the data base server. Nothing is wrong with them. I thing the problem is with the firewall but I can't fix it !! and my second problem…

Hi I have a issue with Windows 2008 R2 server. We installed it, but now the thing is, I can remote desktop into the system with Administrator and all is fine. I created a user on the system, but when I log in with this user, the server dissapears, and I can no longer ping it. What I have to do then is go to the machine, ctrl + alt + del, log in with Administrator, and then connect again to the internet. Is there a way I can keep this from happening? I am not even sure what is causing it to disconnect from the network. Any help would be greately appreciated. Thanks Kobie Wolke

Hi! I have one computer, that i do not use and i would like to use it as a windows server for domain and VPN access. I have one desktop computer and one laptop computer and i have a couple of questions. 1. Can i have only one domain user for both computers (logged in at the same time), or do i have to create a seperate domain user for each computer? 2. At the moment i am testing the configuration. I can succesfully ping domain.net, server.domain.net, or computer1.domain.net, but I can not ping computer2.domain.net (on computer 2 it is reverse.. i can succesfuly ping domain, server and computer2, but not computer1). 13. Hi everybody, I'm new to the forum and new to Windows Server 2008 as well. A friend of mine called me to help him with a new workstation for his office. I've built it and hooked it up to his workgroup network. He has 6 more workstations running Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro. One Server 2008 with one role installed: File Services. Upon connecting his new workstation I've tried connecting to the shares on the server but got the "\\SERVER is not available. You do not have permission...." message. The new workstation can connect to all other workstations and read/write to their shares. Had my laptop with me so I joined the workgroup and tried connecting to the server's…

  15. Hello Everyone! I have a Windows Server 2008 set up as a DNS Server among other things, and I need to alter a DNS setting for a domain name so that all LAN computers get a different IP address than what it listed with other DNS providers like say Google or OpenDNS. I think I did this right: Open Server Manager Expand DNS Server Expand DNS Expand (SERVERNAME) Expand (networkname) Action > New Host (A or AAAA) Name: sub.domain.com IP Address: IP.Address.For.ServerLocally Add Host That creates a com, domain subdirectory structure with a record for "sub" with the server's internal IP. However, the workstations still return with the external IP for the serv…

  16. Right, I started revising for 70-640 Configuring Windows Server 2008 Active Directory. To do this, I installed Windows Server 2008 on my computer, created a domain called contoso. So far, I have followed the book with practises etc and no problem. Now, I used Virtual box to install ServerCore as I didnt have another computer to work with and the problem I am having here is, I cant join "contoso" domain. I have set ipv4 static ips without a problem but cannnot join domain and i am guessing its a network issue, virtualbox not allowing connection between Server01 and Server02 so i hoped I could use some help here. Setup ---------- Server01 (Windows Server 2008 install…

I am trying to map a drive like so: net use \\10.10.10.10\sharename Password /USER:Username /YES I get a 1219 error telling me that you can't map more than one drive to the same resource. (note I am mapping without a drive letter, because I am using in an SSIS package and I don't know what drive letter will be available at runtime) But if I try to disconnect the drive like this net use \\10.10.10.10\sharename /DELETE /YES It tells me it can't find the network resource. How can I be mapped to a drive that it can't find? How to get out of this situation? The user I am using to map the drive is a local user on the remote 10.10.10.10 box. Thanks

I installed a new 2008R2 64 bit server and moved a couple hundred Gig of data from my old 2003 32 bit server to it and shared it out and set permissions as they were on the old server. Users try to access their data only to be denied access at different levels in the sub folder structure. When I go to the folder and reset the permissions it acts like it is working but will just sit there with the status bar going across the screen forever and I am unable to even cancel it and have to log off the server in order to stop it. Even as the administrator I cannot change it nor can I even copy or delete the folders or files it will just hang. Has anyone seen this and kn…

Hello, i have question on Group Policies. The scenario could be like this: Lets say I have OU XXX with 2 sub OUs: XXX_Users and XXX_Comps. There are 200 users, with same restrictions, privileges, etc... One day 2 users are promoted, and they have gained privileges to auto start some program upon logon... 1 user chooses Calc.exe and other chooses winamp.exe. How can I set that parameter on user level inside GP? that option should work anywhere user tries to login (like other location, or other OU). If you need some more explanation on this, feel free to ask. Thank You in advance Neven

  20. Ok so I got a bunch of viruses a while back and I cleaned them all from my computer using a spyware software. But ever since then every time I open a program it asks me what I want to use to open it with. It always offers the internet explorer and Firefox (because I use Firefox and not the explorer) and it also offers the browse button. Sometimes if I'm lucky I can use a file from the 'browse' and open what I need, but that's not often... All my games, Office, and even my solitaire can't be opened! I would be so happy if someone could help me. :( Thanks you guys! -Virus Victim.

  22. Hi there! I have hit the wall like you would say in my seat. I have installed Windows Server 2008 RC2 64-bit on my HP Probook 6450b Everything worked fine until I realized that I didn't have any internet connection. I know that Vista drivers should work in Windows Server. But they didn't. So I installed my wireless drivers. They show up, YAY!. But they don't work either... The wireless card is found and installed, but it says Disabled. I have tried various methods to activate it again. Does anyone have a solution for my problem? Thanks for reading this!

Hi, I am trying to configure VPN access to my Window 2008 Server. I have managed to set server roles: -have installed IIS server with all security addons. -have installed Netowork Policy and Access role My problem is: When I go to Active directory user and computers, I open the user that I would like to allow access to VPN services. Then when I go to Dial-in tab I am getting this Error message (screenshots included): Could not load the Dial-in profile for this user because: The endpoint format is invalid. Then I click OK and another error shows up: Dial-in page initialization failed. I have been googling all over the internet. I have found some inform…
