Hello, I will start this thread without giving all the information, I will fill it as necessary. We built a new server 2 months ago and we now use it. It's a normal PC box but it does have server hardware. There is one addition: OCZ Vertex 2 180GB which contains the database only. The OS is stored on a RAID1 of 500GB hard drives. This server runs Oracle 11G 64 bits. I'm an advanced PC user but I am not an IT professional. This new server was built following my recommendation because we had problems with the limited memory available in 32 bits. So here is the issue: We discovered 2 weeks ago that the server was rebooting unexpectedly and randomly. There is n…

I was wondering how I would apply a GPO to every user on my domain except a specific one...for instance, if I was to edit the Default Domain Policy - how to stop it affecting everyone. I know on 2003, I used to just deny the GPO to the specific user - but unsure of how to go about this on 2008? Help much appreciated

Hey there, I was wondering what the best way would be to stop users being able to log onto servers (either locally or remotely) - Obviously Domain Admin accounts etc can automatically do this, but I'd like to be able to control who can and who cannot log into the server...would this be a group membership based solution or something similar? Help much appreciated, R Green

In every classroom we have one printer. If a student logs on in classroom A, I want that they only can print from this printer. If they go to classroom B, they must only print from the printer in classroom B, ... Now I have set up A GPO, if they logon in -for example- classroom A, the printer of classroom A is added to their printers. If they go to classroom B, the printer of the classroom B is added to their printers, but the printer of classroom A is also in the list. That is what I want to prevent. How could I do that? thank

I want to continue studying for the test but If I am studying the wrong answers it is pointless. Does anyone know where I can check my answers or get an answerkey. I have also been studying "MCITP windows server 2008 server administrator study guide" by Darril Gibson is this a good study guide or can anyone recomend a better one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm administrating a server 2008 r2 with apr. 20 user pc's. Our accounting software backs up to an external FTP site. If I back up directly from teh server, there is no problem i just connects and backs up directly. But if i try the same from one of the user pc's i get a time out and no back-up :-( What is wrong? Firewall is off on the user PC. I've tried to turn off the local virusprotection an still no luck. The server is setup with the default local policys. I've tried to look trough all settings on the server i could think of but i'm still kind of a newbie, and therefore a little scared of touching to much :-S The user PC's have no other problems connect…

Hi! I recently had to rebuild my work PC and laptop from home. When I did, I now can't remote into work. I get an error message, "The computer that you are trying to connect to cannot be contacted. Verify that it is turned on, is awake, and is connected to the network." I have tried all that I know and I can't find the problem. I can connect to my work Exchange server just fine. I am running SBS 2008 at work, along with Windows 7 Pro on the PC and laptop. Any ideas? Thanks! Scott

Hi All! I hope I am posting in the right section. Please accept my apologies if this is not the right section. I am kind of new to this, but I am intrigued by what the IT guys at my work do. I am looking to do a career switch. I have recently purchased 2 "beginners" books, but after installation......I am a bit lost. Hoping someone can help me with some of my technical questions. I will try to give a quick synopsis of what I have tried so far...... I have copies of WinXP, Server 2008 and Win7. I decided to put 2 copies of Server 2008 in Virtualbox in hopes of making one an email and intranet server.....and the other serving as a file server (shares files?). I a…

Hi All! I am trying to learn how to effectively use Server 2008 and I am not going to school (too poor) nor do I work in the industry. I just want to learn a little bit about network administration and have chosen Server 2008 as my study tool. All I have are two "beginners" books, which are actually catered more for the intermediate user. Just in case anybody is reading and is looking to mentor me......here is a tidbit of info: I currently have installed 1. Virtualbox 2. Server 2008 twice (I want to see if I can set up two servers) 3. Windows 7 4. Windows XP My computer is running 4GB of Ram while the processing speed is at about 3Ghz. From what I un…

Ok hi, so i just installed windows server 2008 R2, its on a seperate partition to my XP installation. The problem is, when server 3008 boots, its grey and everything is classic looking, like old style start menu, and everything is old style grey like some windows services havnt loaded or something? The XP and server installations are on seperate hard drives. Do i need Windows 7 installes and install server 2008 over it, or is windows server 2008 R2 completely stand alone? There are also more issues relating to hardware, one or two wireless lan card wont enable. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Hello, I'm new here and already start up with a problem. I have installed Windows Server 2008RS 2 on a PC running an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core CPU with 4GB RAM. The installation process worked like a charm, but the trouble started at configurating the server. During the first config. screen where the time zone and other tasks are set up, I clicked to set up my network configuration and there it started. The onboard network controller won't recieve an IP from the router (D-Link DIR 825). DHCP on the router is enabled. I've already tried to set up a static IP, enabled/disabled the Windows firewall, but nothing works. What am I doing wrong?

Okay here is my layout and what I want to do, I have a windows server with two NIC's installed. One NIC is connected to my cable modem, the other NIC will be connected to my wireless router which in return will give access to the other computers in my home. However all is not simple, cannot get the router and the internet to play nicely together. RRAS installed but no link up between the two. How can i go about doing this? Also my main reason for doing such a thing is this, security, I want the server to scan all incoming outgoing requests, and scan for viruses and such. Basically an added layer. P.S. Router is a Dlink DIR-655 Extreme N Gigabit wireles…

Hi, I have recently bought a used Dell Power Edge 1950, with dual Quad core xeons and 32G of RAM, which came with standard on-board VGA card. Searched on dell site and found that nVidia Quadro NVS 290 can be used with server. So, bought one, inserted into one of the unused pci-e x8 slot and installed drivers. Device manager shows no problems, but there is no display from the graphics card. Dell does not allow to disable the onboard VGA card, I was wondering that windows should let me choose graphics card or at least if I could get display on to both the monitors. I have attached a screen shot of device manager and display properties. Please, help me out. Th…

If I had a copy of Windows Server 2003 and a copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 and wanted to install and configure 2003 with AD/DNS and do an actual upgrade/migration TO 2008 could I do that from within a virtual environment? Crazy question I know, and I am assuming this could be done? Just want to be familiar with the the entire AD/DNS upgrade process/commands. The reality is that we are still on 2000 AD but I believe the best procedure would be to "stand-up" A 2003 machine first? Am I correct in saying that you cannot migrate from 2000 to 2008? Would this statement be true? " The best bet would be to convert the schema to Windows Server 2003 and then upgrade from 200…
