Hello all. I am in the beginning stages of learning Server 2008 R2. Everything I have learned already is just from internet tutorials and youtube videos, so bear with me a little here. I have set up Server 2008 R2 on a virtual machine and also created 2 virtual XP pro machines to simulate my small office where I plan on actually using Server for real (once I learn enough). I have already installed and set up the following roles and features: AD DS, DNS, DHCP, Remote Desktop, IIS, and Application Server. I have created one OU and added all my users to that OU. So what I am having trouble with is assigning group policies well several different types of group policies..…

level: novice First, I found IPSecPol.exe for windows 2000, does it exist for 2008 also? What I want to do, and there may be a better way to do it: My SQL Server sa acocunt gets attacked constantly. I've renamed and disabled it, but the sql error log fills up with failed attempts to login to the missing sa account. I can monitor the logs and find the ip address, so if I had a command line way to block an IP address I could do that while the attack was happening. I know I could just not use sql authentication, but this is not an option right now. Also, I could enfore password policies and lock out the user after so many failed attempts, but I don't kno…

Im Trying to copy the information from an external USB hard drive onto my server and started of moving about 350gb worth of data. When i do this the transfer rate i get it 3mbps wich i consider to be very slow? But it also serverly affects the functionality of the server - it will no longer allow remote connectio…

I am trying to transfer network shares from the existing physical Win 2003 server to VM Windows 2008 server with robocopy utility. It is copying the files and folders without security permission even though I used /SEC switch. If I use the same command between two Physical with same OS, it is copying along with security permissions. Is there a any limitations between Windows server 2003 and 2008 or what could be the reason. Are there any other tools apart from robocopy to complete this task. Thanks Rosh

Dear all, I am having problem inheriting a parent group's permission to a child group. OS: Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise. Scenario SECURITY GROUP A ..........|______Security Group B ..............................|__________ USER A If I place permission on a folder and restrict Group B from it, User A cannot access the folder. However, if I place permission on a folder and restrict Group A, User A still can access the folder. From my observation, Group B does not inherit Group A's permission. I also checked effective permission and it shows nothing when the restriction is applied to group A. Is there any way I can work this around? Thank you in adva…

We have a Windows Server 2008 standard 64-bit running SQL 2005 Standar 64-bit with a Xeon processor, 8GB mem, 2x RAID mirror set and another extra HDD for backups. This server runs IIS 7 and is a fairly high traffic website. Currently the server would sometimes just reboot unexpectedly otherwise it runs like a dream without any issues. Question: How would I go about troubleshooting this, as I am not sure what kind of monitoring I need to setup to trace the cause of these reboots. Any help would be appreciated

As any administrator of SBS knows that when you log on much like the Server Management Console on all of the other server editions do the SBS Management Console comes up at logon. This screen shows that I have a number of critical errors under security and also under updates. When I go to the console's reports page, the detailed reports tell me that several computers are way out of date and their firewalls are not turned on. Seems like a nice feature, however the computers in question are no longer a part of our network. They were removed a while back before I got here which was at least two months ago. I removed them from the network using the SBS Console and cleared the…

Hi: I don't know if this question is a simple one, but I have spend the past whole day searching for an answer which I could not. Basically, my problem is this. I have Windows 2008 Server, and this is a home environment. I am doing this for centralized control, and network storage space. Anyways, here's the issue. The ONLY way I can connect my laptop to join the domain is to set the clients primary DNS server to the IP of the server itself. When I do this, and go to Computer -> change from workgroup to Domain and put the domain name, it will pop up with username/password. If it is set as automatically assign the DNS, it will say the Domain cannot be contacted…

I'm getting a lot of brute force attacks on my sql server sa account, usually from a variety of IP addresses, but there was one IP that kept coming back for several days, so I created an IPSec policy to block it. My question: Is there a way to tell (event?) that the IP address attempted to connect but was blocked? (this almost seem counter-intuitive, but who knows?) I ask because I want to make sure my block works. Obviously if I see the IP address show up in my sql logs again I know it did not, but not showing up again does not prove it did work. Also I'd like the satisfaction of seeing the IP blocked. :) BTW, I need sql authentication, but I have already renam…

Hi all, I'm a programmer with just enough server knoledge to get into trobule. On our hosted virtual 2008 r2 server, every 5 minutes there is a new set of events in the application log. They start with the event: received control channel command 'reload' and then there is a series of 7 additional events describing the success of the reload. The result is a large event log. Is this normal? What process is causing this? why would it need to 'reload' whatever its reloading every 5 minutes? Here is the initial event in detail. Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - 3 4 0 0x80000000000000 123046 App…

Good morning! So every once in a while, a computer on the network gets infected because some dumb user wasn't paying attention to what they were clicking, it FLOODS the mail queue with Spam, and then we get Blacklisted.. and if you've ever been blacklisted, you know how much of a pain in the butt it is to get off!!! Do you know of any solutions to stop Outgoing spam? It seems most solutions are for inbound only, and the only solution I've seen is the Symantec Mail appliance.. Thanks in advance =)

Hey, I'm rather new to the whole server - experience and I'm searching for some things... I would like that the My Documents - files are synchronized when the user log on/off. I suspect that could be done with GPO's? Do I have to manually create a folder in the shared folder on my server each time I create a new user. And do I have to set permissions for that user each time? I can't figure this whole thing out! Somebody can help me? Thanks!

Hi @ all. i have an HP DL 380 G6 Server (Windows Server 2007 Standard SP2 Intel XEON CPU X5560 @ 2.80 GHz (2 processors), 4GB RAM ,32bit) which has the following problem. I can not copy large files (e.g 2-5G).It stuck on the 'calculating' process. If i press the cancel button, my PC also stuck and i have to reboot it. This problems appears at his local hard disk (NTFS/RAID 5) and at another one which points with an iSCSI in an EMC Clarion CX120. The strange thing is that it was working well for a long time and it first came up when we disabled the iSCSI connection due Test Purposes. When we enabled it back, we came across with that situation. It is not …

I need to stop a specific user from becoming affected by the password complexity requirments of the default domain policy - I know I could put them into a seperate OU, but that isn't a viable option. Is there any way that you guys know of that would allow the rest of the policy to effect them but not the password section? Thanks in advance R Green
