  5. Hello, I have been designated "server setter upper"... there is no IT department here I am afriad. Please be patient with me. I have been trying to fathom this for the last 3 days. In essence, the GPO applied to the OU which my group object is listed under is not being applied to any of the group members. It does however get applied to any individual users put into that OU. Please look at my screenshot (also attached). It depicts the problem exactly. ...anyone got any ideas? thanks in advance, Michelle

  6. ok so i was recently trying to forward port 8016 to the internal host of 192.168.0.100 and prior to installing my server, all this was working fine. The host is a DVR, which im setting up again for remote access and viewing, the problem ive got is, the host wont accept connections and the port wont open, and so i thought id check the server to be sure that nothing was stopping it, no NAT config or routing issues and found the following The DVR is on 192.168.0.100 and the "internal" device on my server is also on 192.168.0.100, so im assuming that port 8016 is forwarding to the internal device on the server, atleast thats all i can think it is. I could rectify this p…

I set up a new server with DNS, DHCP and Active Directory. First question is, is there a problem putting all 3 of these roles on the same server? The server is a Win 2008 R2 server. I am having problems adding all of my workstations to the domain. Oddly enough I have only been able to add my workstation to the domain but no others. I have no idea why this is I've checked the settings on my workstation and they are identical to the other workstations that will not connect to the domain. I am running into a wall as far as the next steps to take to find my problem. I am also wondering if this could be a result of reverse or forward look ups. I am attaching a screens…

  8. Is there a way to automatically configure folder share permissions based on the name of a folder? Say for example a user creates a folder (anywhere on the server) named "Quotes". I would like that folder to automatically belong to the Quoting Group and exclude access by anyone not in the Quoting Group, even if the user that created the folder is not a member of the Quoting group. We have a database application that creates and manages a large number of folders. It creates thousands of numbered folder "sets", each numbered folder having a standard set of sub-folders like Sales, Purchase Orders, etc. We need to control access to the sub-folders based on Group membership.…

  9. Hi all, I'm newbie to Windows and sorry for the FAQ. A domain (mydom.edu.hk) is setup with 2 DCs. Clients on other vlan can't join the domain with error "The network was not found". All ports between DCs and clients are opened in firewall, while Windows firewall are disabled for testing purpose. Then on the DCs, I run dcdiag /v /c /e /d and got following error: ------------ cut here ----------- Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\MY-DC1 Starting test: Advertising The DC MY-DC1 is advertising itself as a DC and having a DS. The DC MY-DC1 is advertising as an LDAP server The DC MY-DC1 is advertising as having a writeable directory The DC MY-DC1 is adve…

Hey Guys, I'm going to rent a Windows Server, but I have a question. If I have 5 useable IP addresses on the server, can I make each browser I install (Firefox, Chrome, IE) connect to the outside world via one different IP out of 5 available? If so, how?

Hello all, I currently have a windows server 2003 with printer and file server role. The server has three drives: disk 0, disk 1 and disk 2. When I try to run the windows 2008 setup I received a installation error. When I researched the error it said it was due to a disk mirror setup. I removed the mirror. It seems disk 1 is the main drive and drive 0 is the spare drive. When I run the setup again it says this computer does not have enough space for temporary files. Windows installation needs at least 464 mg of space on any partition. When I researched that error it said I need to make a partion active. The only active partition is the DVD drive. I'm in computer manage…

It is a very general question. How does disabling the power management in the BIOS enhance or reduce Windows 2008 R2 performance ? I have read some AnandTech articles on Xeon P and C states but I am not sure how disabling this on a 2P 4C system would somehow enhance the OS's performance thereby enhancing the application software performance. I would gladly read up on any references. Thanks.

I'm hoping someone can make a suggestion as I'm at a loss. I have one server with 3 NIC's, WAN, LAN, and VLAN. WAN has the internet. LAN has a static IP assigned to it. VLAN is the hyper-v network adapter. I install Hyper-V and configure it to use VLAN. Several restarts occur. Then, I install DHCP, list LAN as the adapter to bind to, set the scope, and set server option 3 to the LAN ip address. I then install Network Policy & Access, select NAT, select WAN as the adapter sourcing the internet, and LAN as the adapter to share internet with. LAN and VLAN are connected to the same switch, VLAN gets it's ip from LAN's scope. VM's get their ip from the VLAN adapter, …

  19. Hi there. I am really upset and frustrated big time, because I entered this password before which looked like this: AdMiNpW!. That was exactly what it looked like. But I was able to log into my server before, with no problem. And then I was happy. But when I restarted my computer, it wouldn't log me in at all! But I really did type my password and it looked just like that. So I also tried to reset my password, but that didn't help either. That was just useless too. But why when I restarted my computer, it wouldn't log me in for again? I mean this is really making me upset and annoyed a lot! So what am I really doing wrong here with this? Can you give me some helpful hints…

Hi all, We currently run a Windows 2000 server that hosts a number of websites and allows users to FTP to their website directories. We decided that it was about time for an upgrade and recently purchased Windows Server 2008. I understand that there are significant differences between the 2 versions of Windows, however I have attempted to set up the new server as much like the old server as I could. It currently runs IIS7 and uses IIS6 for FTP. From what I can tell everything appears to be working correctly, however there are a few things that I am unsure of. First of all, the default website resides within the C:/inetpub/wwwroot/ directory and each seperate web…

  21. We have a really old 2000 Server that is currently running our DNS. I want to move that over to a Server 2008 box, but I'm not sure of the best way to do this. The Server 2008 box is already configured as DC and I have the DNS service installed, but it's not configured. I'm wondering if I can do it one of two ways: 1) Set up the 2008 box to be an additional DNS server and then simply take the 2000 server offline. 2) Set up a new DNS configuration on the Server 2008 box and then tell DHCP to give everyone IPs with the Server 2008 box as the DNS server. I have no idea which is the better course of action or how to actually do either. The current DNS setup on the S…
