In Win 2008 server I need to be able to see extensions, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it. I also need to be able to set column widths. I expect to be able to drag the edge of a column, but all I am able to do is change to order of the columns, which I DONT want to happen. I desperately need to change the file type of a file, but I cannot do that. I need to create FetchLIS.exe.config. I started by creating a new text document. When I renamed it, The system invisbly added .txt to my new name which I can't remove, rendering the file useless. Please help. Thanks, Jon Jacobs

If I use a GPO to configure the auditing of object access on a 2k8R2 server and then check the Local Security Policy of that server, the setting for Audit Object Access (Security/Local/Audit) is listed with a different icon than the rest (the changed icon indicates the settings are in fact being received from GPO) but the Security Setting column does not correctly reflect the policy applied settings (Success, Failure). Instead, it just says No Auditing, just like all the other options that were not set via GPO. If I double-click on the Audit Object Access setting, the options to configure are grayed out (as they should be) since they're being applied via GPO. So the …

ok so ive done a bit of research on this but nothing really works i found that creating a batch file with cd C:\Windows\System32\ rasdial.exe MY VPN DOMAINNAME\USERNAME PASSWORD might work and schedulling its startup with windows scheduler. however, this is ratch unsafe storing my username and password in a BATCH file and also, when i run the batch file, it doesnt connect. So then i tried, add shortcut to startup folder, unticking boxes etc. but still doesnt connect on startup, is there another option for this What i am aiming for is the vpn to connect on logon then the network drives to connect on logon too. Thanks!!

Error: no remote desktop license servers available to provide licenses The remote session was disconected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide licenses. Please contact the Server Administrator. There are no people logged in the system. We installed the licenses as we usually do but it is still giving the error. The server is part of a domain but even on the domain controller in terminal Services Manager, the server is listed under the domain name. It seems a bit weird and we really need to solve it as soon as possible. I would appreciate if someone helps. Thanks Thanks, Adrian

Hi, I have Windows 2008 R2 Dedicated server and its running fine. I am running camfrog chat services in my server so I can't enable Windows firewall in this server. If I enabled the camfrog isn't working. However the server is getting freeze and at that time its having 1Gig of network lagg. after few minutes its getting normal. On that time I am not able to access the server due to heavy lagg. But the ping response is always normal while that lag is arrised. In camfrog chat service totally max 600customers only making chat. Can anyone please let me know how can I stop this laggy and ho can I find this connections after the laggy is dropped. Thanks an advance!

is there any way to lock down printing preferences on connected printers on a user workstations. When I connect a printer, it gets the default settings from the server. That's all good. But the user can go to his Printer folder, select printing preferences and change those. Ideally, I want the user only to be able to change the settings on individual print job and not for all jobs as it is now. we are using win svr 2008 R2 with citrix terminal server 2003 I've tried to google this info but I can't find anything.

I am currently enrolled in an introductory course on Server 2008 and I have a few questions that are not directly answered in my textbook. If someone could help me out I would be greatly appreciative. 1. Why does a policy set in the Computer Configuration node of a GPO linked to the domain object affects all computers in the domain, including all computers in the Domain Controllers OU and the Computers folder. 2.When might nesting OUs be appropriate? Discuss the advantages. Thanks in advance, Drew

ok im trying to host a game server (counter strike) from my server, and currently i have 3 devices, Network connection 1 which is my servers (PC) ip address with DNS and everything, my loopback connection at 127.0.0.1 and the other one which i dont know what it does "Internal". My problem is when i launch the server for cs, it is running on the "Internal" device giving it the ip of 192.168.0.210. ive tried port forwarding the port 27015 to 192.168.0.210, but this doesnt work. I have had it running once on the local connection 1 192.168.0.2 and dont know how i did it, and forwarded 27015 to 192.168.0.2 and that worked fine, i was able to see the game server in the s…

hi, i saw there was already a post on this but had some questions of my own. Ive just enabled NAT and am learning how to configure it. Ive setup a DMZ on my router to my server, all works fine and found that windows firewall was controlling my port forwarding rules... my question is am i able to disable windows firewall from controlling port forwarding and use my NAT device to configure it. I found that if i click on IPV4, NAT, Local Area connection and then in the tab "Services and Ports" it has some options for port forwarding? is this a possbility.. also i found in windows firewall there were heaps of ports open, or listed threre anyway, wouldnt this make using…

I recently installed windows server R2 2008 on one of my computers. I would like my other computer to join onto the new server, without losing my current information. Is there a way to do this? Current setup: Home Workgroup: with 5 computers. Comp 1, Comp 2, etc. New setup (domain) Home.Server: Wanting to move the computers from my workgroup on to here. When I add a user with Active directory, i obviously get a new user with empty pictures, docs, etc. There must be a way to take current users and information and transfer them into the new domain, right?

Hi, this is probably a noobish question but here goes anyways: I have a secondary partition for my data on my server containing some shared folders and some folders with user permissions set. I need to backup all of the drive data keeping these shares/permissions intact so I can upgrade my RAID array from 5 to 10 for certain reasons. Would it be possible to use robocopy to backup all files to an external hard disk, then use my RAID config to create the new array, and then use robocopy to transfer all the files back to the new logical drive WITHOUT losing the shares and permissions? If not, it has been suggested that I get a copy of Acronis and try that. Any fee…

I am the administrator for the whole system (network) and I have done something by accident (in active directory) which is preventing one of my computers on the network (webdev computer) from accessing it's own C drive (access denied). Furthermore, when I am logged into the Windows server 2008 as "Administrator", I look under "Computer" and I see the "C on WEBDEV" drive, but even when I click on it in there, it denies me access. I have access to everything else except for that drive. P.S. When I am logged in as a "user" or as "administrator" on the WebDev computer and look at the C drive, there is an icon with 2 people in it (I am assuming this is an icon for permissi…

I am deploying Windows Server 2008 R2 in a hotel for their business center to simplify management of all the computers. The one thing that is bothering the heck out of me is that the guests will be so confused when they see the computer asking for a password for login. I already have the computers auto-logging in upon boot to a customized Guest account profile and upon logout, it clears all of their personal data. That is great - except it brings back the logon screen which asks for a password. Is there any way to have the computer auto log back in after a logout to the guest account? OR better yet a shortcut on the desktop that says like "Clear Personal Data" or "Reset" …

Hi All! Is it possible with Server 08 R2 to have a user account that is temporary - as in only valid for one login then cleared of everything? Specifically, the account gets wiped of everything on logoff (i.e. all files deleted, internet history cleared, etc - essentially a new profile upon logon)? Is it also possible to retain default browser/other application settings persistently? It would be annoying for users to, for example, have to type in a name when they open Office for the first time, or have IE, Firefox, and Chrome ask them if they want to set them to default, IE8's "Welcome" setup wizard, etc. Thanks! Ross
