Hello, I was really surprised - NTFS does not support group quotas? How can I set disk quotas for every user with specific user group? Now, after the user creation (in AD) I have to run scripts to set quotas (fsutil quota). Is there another easier way?

ok im angry, im really really angry lol. i just got a new server, running server 2008 r2 32bit. Intel D865GBF Southbridge Intel 82801EB (ICH5) Chipset i865P/PE/G/i848P ive real numerous posts regarding this and how many people have simply disabled the device in device manager and re-enabled it but and all problems were solved, but this is not the case for me So, all i can find for the manboard are XP drivers, so i installed them and they installed fine. But the "x" still remained at the volume icon in the taskbar, so i thought the drivers were incorrect being XP drivers. So today, i went and purchased a new sound card. Windows 7 compatible. installed it,…

  5. hi, ive changed my server over and put a new PC in and im experiancing some weird problems. Firstly, i cant install Web PI (Web Paltform Installer), it brings up a funny error and ive tried all troublshooting steps. Secondly, i think it may be something wrong with the os or something, as a new install i just tried to activate windows and i cant remember the exact error but if it comes up again ill screenshot it, it said something about failing to find correct DNS details and quit. Internet and everything is fine, however another thing is it seemed to come installed with heaps of security settings with IE that im slowly working on removing, i think i disabled Adva…

Hello I am using Windows 2008 Server R2 X64 using microsoft remote desktop where the audio is redirected to the client via remote desktop. The server has no sound device, yet via desktop experience it has "Remote Audio" device installed. All is fine, except at times - after several hours of work - audio files will not play. When I try to manually run windows media player on a .wav file I am getting "windows media player has encountered a problem playing the file" and a windows media player window saying "media changing ....". The computer works fine. The problem needs a reboot to be resolved until the next time. All audio files are in good shape. No disk problems whats…

I had a system failure and needed to restore from a backup, but I am having many problems. I did a full system backup to a NAS drive a few weeks ago. Our server failed (replaced HDD) and I needed to restore from that backup. I tried to restore from the boot DVD but got an error message. I decided to complete a fresh server 2008 install and try a restore, with no luck. Here is exactly what happens: - I launched Windows Server Backup - Selected Recover\A Backup Stored in Another Location\Remote Shared Folder\ - I entered the NAS location path: \\192.168.101.135\office\full system backup - I get the following error message: "The process cannot access the f…

  8. Can anyone recommend reliable yet affordable tape backup software for Windows 2008? Don't need fancy features Backup Exec has. Something more down-to-earth like ntbackup.exe to transfer files on tape. Thanks )

I work in an office with 4 computers on a network with a VERY old computer running windows server 2003. We recently purchased a brand new computer running windows server 2008. I was hoping there was something similar to the Easy File Transfer for the server editions but haven't been able to find anything. Is there something similar or somewhere I oculd find directions on manually saving any data I need to keep? I keep finding posts on migrating but they all refer to migrating the software but not the physical computer. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I have a windows 2008 server (x32) running in RDS mode on a W2K8r2 Doman, if I assign any policies to the user, e.g. printer mappings, Drive Mappings ect. it can take literally hours to logon.. if I remove policies the server will logon immediately. I don't see this issue with the w2k3 server or with XP/W7 clients (Xp has the client ext. installed of course). I don't see the issue if the account has admin rights with policies. I suspect it might be UAC?? but am at a loss as to how this can be. I am currently running SP2 with all the current patches. after hours of Google searches this looks like it could be related to clientside extentions but no patches will …

Hi, Im looking at combining a Server 2003 machine, running as a web and file server, with a Windows 7 machine running IIS to host movies, onto a single Server 2008 machine. Ive heard that having a number of music and video files on this server could make it more attractive to hackers. Ill be running two external websites, an internal site to host my video collection to a video appliance, and a file server to host my MP3s to an audio appliance. Id like to set the server up to isolate the media files as much as possible from the external websites, and to secure the entire server as best I can. Id appreciate any input as to if this is possible on one server, and a…

ok, so i know im posting alot, but ive got alot going on haha yea nah sorry about that, but heres todays question Its about NAT, ive researched about NAT, and really TRIED to understand it, but just cant grasp it. I cant understand what NAT does. It appears it somehow changes the ip addresses? Maybe you could just write up and explaiin to me exactly how NAT works and what is does..i see theres many different types of NAT because at the moment, my server has windows firewall disabled and NO NAT, and i beleive it is something to do with security. (this probally explains my other post where i think someone else is logged onto my server haha!) Thanks!! you R…

Hi, In regard to this blog: http://blogs.technet.com/b/thenetworker/archive/2007/12/09/of-file-access-from-the-command-prompt-and-trace-analysis.aspx Did some simultaneous wireshark and Sysinternals process monitor logging and now have an issue with identifing an image path or file/process name associated with the SMB process ID [ Process ID: 65279 ]. Process ID: [ 65279 ] value from the SMB packet header. Sysinternals process monitor does not reveal any activity related to that PID. Nor does the Windows task manager. But, wireshark log does show request being sent on behalf of the PID 65279. Reading this KB article [ http://support.microsoft.com/kb…

Hi guys! I have set up a vanilla deployment server to test within the new network I am rolling out at my company. This is to replace an inefficient system of manually restoring a Norton Ghost created image. These are the things I require from it: Request an administrator password (pulled from AD) before allowing the install. Currently this is happening from default settings, so I don't want to lose this when I change anything. Automatic computer naming. We have a naming convention in place (LT-XXX and DT-XXX where XXX is a number and LT is laptop and DT is desktop). I don't mind if it requests this as a manual input during install, but currently it autocreates a …

First of all.. sorry about my english.. and sorry if I ask some stupid questions ) I work at a small school.. and this week we have some problems connecting our computers to the network. It seems quite random if the computers get logged on to network or not. The weird thing is that the first 5-10 PCs that we turn on is connected OK to network.. then there is almost random if they get connected or not. I was looking at out server today and there are MANY errors.. (see attachment) -- Is there some quick solution to this?

  17. Hello, is it possible to automatically create some folders for some group of users in Active Directory? My idea: 1. user USERNAME will login on some client PC (PC is joined to domain which has two domain controllers: AD1, AD2) 2. specified directories will be automatically created on both domain controllers and connected as a network drives (e.g. \\AD1\private\USERNAME, \\AD2\public\USERNAME) I know how to automatically map network drives but I don't know how to automatically create these directories (and set them some permissions). Is it possible to do this automatically or I must to do it in manual way?

Hello I have Windows Server 2008 R2. When ever I change systempropertiesadvanced-change desktop look(eye candy) to customize, after logging off the settings return to normal. If I enter sounds(control panel) and change my sound scheme to no sound, after I log off and return it will change back to Windows default. I can change most settings(desktop wallpaper etc), but some settings are forced back to defaults. Is there a policy thats doing this? All of this is happening on standard users accounts. I can change what ever in Admin. Another question: My Windows Server running very quick, but I noticed RAM is very cheap these day. If I upgraded the comp…

  20. Hello. I am having a strange problem with a specific users account in Windows Server 2008 R2. The account keeps locking out after the administrator (sort of me) unlocks it. I am able to unlock it, but it keeps on locking itself again, almost immediately (i.e., within 2 minutes after unlocking). I am wondering whether there is another service or program that is having this effect on the account. Also, this phenomenon does not happen with other user accounts. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I would start debugging this problem? Many thanks. Keith

By Paul Thurrott Soon, mobile developers will be able to publish apps to the Windows Phone Marketplace that target Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango." But how does that work exactly? What about those users still using Windows Phone 7? Todd Brix explains what happens in a blog post today on the Windows Phone Developer Blog. Source: Win Super Site

  22. I have a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server issue with Crystal reports dlls. I am implementing the terminal server configuration for 3rd party software that we use to access a SQL server DB. I am using Win server 2008 R2 on the terminal server. All of the workstations connecting to the TS are running Win XP. Many of the new reports supplied by the vendor present a window with drop downs for variable and sort selections, which is great, but this is the cause of my problem. Many of my users cant run the new reports and are presented with blank drop down menus when the new report is run. However, other users dont have any problems with the reports. For users that g…

I have a server (2008 x64) with an installed application that prints to a printer Generic / Text Only. I want to connect two terminals by RDP to this server. The two PCs that are going to connect remotely has windows 7 x86. This connection already did and that's fine. The problem is the printers. Testing the printing of test page redirected printer, it communicates but nothing comes out on paper. Problem could be drivers? If it is so generic I use the text windows. Another doubt: it may give problems that the printer is installed on the server with the controller and the V64 are x86 pcs?? I try to install the driver for the x86 server but it asks me the files (. Inf) file…

Hi I'm trying to apply a few settings for Internet Explorer using Group Policy and everything I've tried doesn't work. I've tried using Preferences > Windows Settings > Registry and creating the changes under there but no joy. What I'm trying to do is modify the following registry keys in HKCU [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PageSetup] "header"="" "footer"="" "margin_bottom"="0.75000" "margin_left"="0.75000" "margin_right"="0.75000" "margin_top"="0.75000" "Print_Background"="yes" "Shrink_To_Fit"="yes" I've got a few GPOs and they work great but this registry thing is driving me insane...
