Greetings. Firstly I am an absolute newbie to Windows 2008 Server but am trying to help out a local (very poor!) school. I have been able to set up users and do basic stuff but at the moment, they have a huge worry. There are large amounts of internet data being consumed and from the data sent to us by our ISP, there are large amounts - 200-300 megs per hour, being SENT out every hour for periods of 5-6 hours maybe once a week, not necessarily at the same time, often late at night / early in the morning. The school is not a big computer user, there is no one in the school using the computers, and more is going out than is coming in which doesn't make sense. The ISP cannot…

  2. Hay friends, I want to surf the internet in windows 7 thru windows server 2008. I have windows server 2008 R2 64bit installed in one computer and windows 7 ultimate 64bit installed on the other. I want that in the computer with windows 7 installed, to be connected to the internet thru the windows server 2008 internet connection. Now I know I have the solution call ICS- but the thing is- I can't manage that, because my windows 7 cant connect thru the windows server 2008 internet connection, and I cant get it to work! So, my final questions is: How do I manage ICS in windows server 2008 64bit and windows 7 ultimate 64bit to work correctly? How do I mana…

  3. I had one user come up to me saying they couldn't save to a series of shared folders on a particular server. Other uses were not experiencing the problem when accessing the same folders. After some troubleshooting I was able to determine that the use has these folders set up as mapped drives, however, each folder shows up as only having 74.6MB of free space when it reality it should have over 2GB. I also mapped various folders from multiple servers to the users profile and found that this issue is only occurring on the D: drive of this particular 2008 R2 file server. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to proceed, any ideas?

Hi, Has anyone encountered any issues whereby the windows 2008 firewall is enabled for no apparent reason by itself? I did a windows update last night and this morning all my windows 2008 R2 servers had their windows 2008 firewall ON. GPO does not have a policy that enables Windows Firewall at all cost.

Hi, I am having an AD environment with 5 DCs. ns1.test ns2.test ns3.test ns4.test ns5.test FSMO role distribution was pending, so virtually ns1.test had all the roles and was the only DC which had writable partition. While some testing I lost ns1.test. I format ns1.test and tried again to attached to domain, but its giving an error saying "You cannot attach any new DC till the time RID master is down" I have all the other four DCs up and running, but I am not able to attach ns1 again to domain. Even though its an testing environment but it has some critical test result and requirement. I will highly obliged if someone can help me on this. - Pra…

Id need to preface this by saying that I am not a IT person but have worked with servers and software a long time. I currently have a domain controller running windows 2000 server and file sharing. I also have another system running 2008 server. My goal is to migrate everything from my 2000 server to my 2008 server. This is what Ive done so far. Ran adprep/forestprep and adprep/domainprep on the old server Pointed the TCP/IP configuration on the new server to the old server Added the new server to the old server as a member server Migrated DHCP service from the old server to the new one Ran DCPROMO on the new server promoting it as an additional domain controller …

Hi Team, New to this form and been away from servers for a bit and recently had to implement a 2008 server in a school. Currently all the users are XP SP3. Here is my issue. I am trying to map a few drives to users based on their group memberships. so... for the sake of keeping this short lets talk about just the faculty group. I created a group called faculty and added all faculty menbers to it. I created a share on the server \\server\GroupShare\FacultyShare I gave security rights (full Control) to the faculty group In GPM I created a policy called faculty and linked it. I went into the users and preferences and drive mappings and told it to map a dri…

hey guys, Hope everyone is doing well. I need some help regarding POP3 emails accounts. I have non domain users who have direct access to the internet , so they can use the outlook by configuring the usual settings for pop and smtp which is normal and working perfectly. Now, when i tried to join these users to a domain, they couldnt access the pop server anymore ( POP3 server is hosted by my ISP ) . I was wondering if its a DNS issue or maybe i have to configure the windows server 2008 to relay or reroute the emails. so my question is how to configure windows server 2008 ( if needed) to Send and receive e-mail over the Internet so that domain users can acces…

Hi everyone, I've started setting up a Windows 2008 server as a bit of a home project, basically to teach myself how to use it. I'm having trouble with some file permissions. Here's what I have set up: In my active directory, I have "user one", "user two" and "user three" which are all part of the domain users group. I also have "administrator" in the domain admins group. I have created a folder called "HomeFolders" on the C drive of the server and shared it. I can see this folder from my client PC when logged into the domain. The HomeFolders folder has read only access from domain users and full access from domain admins. This works correctly. Inside the…

  12. Hi, Recently I installed a couple servers in Windows 2008 R2 (no sweat). I also established disk mirroring in both servers (no sweat either). But I began to think about what to do i case of disaster, so I build a test server to simulate disk failures. I found that if disk 1 fails it is very easy to recover (just install a new disk 1 and re-establish the mirror). BUT if this disk 0 is the one that fails it's another story. I have tried different ideas, searched TechNet, searched Internet and I did not find a solution to this theoretical but possible problem. Can anyone give me an step-by-step solution to this problem? Regards, CNGarcia

  17. Here's the setup, I have a small lab that connects to the server on the other side of the building, yesterday out of the blue 2 of the machines cannot login to the server using the default login of "Student." When prompted for credentials and they are entered I receive the following message "the trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed" Now, with my limited knowledge I figured that if i login to the machine locally and unjoin and rejoin it to the domain this might solve the issue. Except one problem, in windows 7 you can't get to that screen without entering the Admin credentials. (which i have) After entering the credentials I still…

Hi, Not sure if this is the right place for this, apologies if so. We have recently upgraded to a SBS2008 set up from a SBS2003 environment. everything has gone well apart from we have some ageing windows 98 clients (that cannot be upgraded or replaced - long story) and I need to be able to map a network drive. In the 2003 environment we had to allow anonymous access to this share and (risky i know) enable the guest account, but it worked. I've done the same here but when I try and map the drive using a script I get Error 55: The specified resource is not available. The computer that shared the resource might have been turned off, or the permissions might h…

I cant seem to find anything about how to use this within a domain though (server 2008) do i have to make all of my servers and clients one of these ip addresses? I will go way over 5 if i do have to. I do have another router (that i can connect to their bt hub i assume) - i only have 1 NIC in each machine. if i somehow manange to make that work - i need some of the servers to be accessable from the internet (like exchange server etc) - anyway im sure that will come after getting the actual ip addresses working. Hope someone can help me or im really stuff…

  21. Hi, I would like to restrict write permissions on certain file types to the normal users. Only the Administrator should have the write permissions on certain types of files. For example, restrict write permissions to users for the type of files say, chm, swf, vbs, inf etc. Is there any way in which I can do that other than going to each file and changing the permissions? Is there any way to do this using group policy? I appreciate if any one can help me with this or atleast give me a hint in which way i should look further. Thanks and regards, Tom

  22. Hi there, Here is what I want to accomplish. I have a folder structure set up for students and teachers. In the folder I have folders for Assignments (teacher can r/w/e etc and students just view) DropBox, where students can drop a file into the folder but can't open the folder, but what I need now is a folder where the teacher can handback assignments. I have created the handback folder, and gave the students full rights to the handback folder, where they can then create their own folder. They are able to create the folder and put files in the folder, and read the files, as well as delete the files. Other students are not able to open any of the files in the othe…

First let me say hello to all as I am a new member here. I look forward to learning all that I can from the knowledgeable people in this community. Now to my issue, I am a new administrator at a school where there is a server and I don't really have that much server experience but I'm trying to learn as I go. The server and all that good stuff was already setup when I came in to take over so, that part is already done. What I am having trouble with is that teachers each have a folder on a shared drive on the network that the students save work to. Now here is where things get difficult for me. The teachers want students to be able to save and read the files but not…

Hi i will try to explain my current setup to help with the question At the moment all servers are 2003 version, i.e. AD server, Exchange server, File server, Terminal Server, ISA Etc. over the last few weeks i have upgraded the users to windows 7. windows 7 creates a new profile for the users (a .v2 version). the terminal being 2003 is based upon the same idea as xp is only looking at the users old profiles and is unable to see the new profile. my problem to solve this issue in thinking of upgrading the terminal server to server 2008 as this can work with the new profile type, i think. my question is will the new 2008 server set up as a terminal server sit ni…
