I need help, I am fairly new to server 2008. I set up some policies to affect a certain user and everything was going well. Once I came back and try a policy that would restrict users from using programs except the once I allowed, some how the policy affected all the accounts even the admin account. I allowed it to use only 2 programs which are IE and some banking program but now i can not make any changes even with the admin account i can't access anything. Is there any way i can turn of policies without the admin account?

  4. Hello, let me try to describe the problem (this is my first question on this forum). Operating system is Windows Server 2008. There is a folder, on domain controller drive, named: FOLDER_1, and file, in this folder, named: FILE_1. There is also OU, named: OU_1. Members of this OU should have been granted access the folder: FOLDER_1 and file: FILE_1, as follows: - OU_1 should granted permissions on FOLDER_1: 'MODIFY'. - One member from OU_1, named: MEMBER_1 (MEMBER_1 has not been granted membership of any Admin group), should granted the 'Modify' permissions on a file: FILE_1 - All other members of OU_1, should granted only 'Read' and 'Read & Execute' permi…

Just deployed a new server on my home network for storage, DHCP, DNS running Server 2008 Std. Been very disappointed with the transfer speeds I'm getting copying files to and from the server. Over wireless (g) I'm lucky if I get 1 Mbps. Wired with gb controllers and gb switch I get about 18 Mbps. Drive to drive copies on the server itself fly (around 300 Mbps). If on the server console itself I browse to "\\localhost\Share" I still get a slow speed (around 28 Mbps). This led me to believe it's a problem with the server configuration, TCP/IP or something. Any advice or ways to better troubleshoot to narrow it down?

Hi guys, I came across this site during random searching for answers, and was wondering if some of you guys could offer some assistance. I come from a helpdesk background and never really played with servers at all except for very basic administration. I have this project to set up a new Domain Controller, and install an SMTP server on there. I have managed to get the server installed, installed ADDS, DNS server, and an SMTP server through IIS 6, which is up and running fine. I can also telnet to the server though port 25. my problem lies here, It is required of me to be able to send a test email, I think via Telnet from a specific address, not related to the dom…

Hi, I have 2 servers, both are domain controllers and Active Directory Domain controllers. I have transferred all the FSMO roles to the "new" server and to my knowledge the "old" server now does very little. However, when switching the "old" server off all the clients become incredibly slow pretty much unusable. The "new" server is the DNS, DHCP and GC server as well as the operations master for everything, however the "old" server still seems to have some link with the Active Directory. What can I do to break this dependancy? Cheers.

I've just installed Windows Server 2008 Standard. I have puchases domains, and a static IP as well. Also I am reading Windows Server 2008 For Dummies...and I am still stumped lol. Is there a tutorial out there that basically takes you from installation, to hosting sites? I would like to use the server to host about 4 sites, when I am done. I guess my questions are mainly about which Ip address I use (for the router) and how I find that info...Also, how to do the port 80, what to enter in the DNS info, AND, how to set up the FTP (I ALWAYS) had trouble with that. At some point I would like to be able to access my server from other places (it is in my basement rig…

Hi, I've recently installed a vanilla version of Server 2008 to take over from our old SBS 2003 server which is close to death. Everything seems to have migrated well and the new 2008 box is running as a DNS server and a DHCP whilst clients are able to log on and off and access the internet as usual, IP's are also being issued successfully. There is one problem, browsing the internet is very slow going, and I think it's DNS related. When typing in the URL to ANY website, no matter the site, the browser (multiple browsers on multiple platforms) hang for around 5-6 seconds before loading the page instantly. It's very odd as it's not like it's making any progress then …

  12. I'm having trouble with a particular Windows update - KB2463332. It's an SQL Service Pack 4 update, if that makes any difference. Anyway, the update says that it has successfully installed, but the next time that WSUS is run, it appears as a Windows update that needs to be installed. This has been going on for 3 months now. I've rebooted several times, even doing a "clean" reboot without any non-Windows services or startup programs running, thinking that they might be conflicting with this update. Below is a snippet from the CBS log, which gives a small indication of what might be wrong. Unfortunately, anything that I've found on this subject will not work on Serv…

Hi all, I have a problem with my new 2008 terminal server. In our domain we have users with roaming profile and users without roaming profiles. When a user without a roaming profile (like an admin user) logs on to the terminal server, everything seems fine. But when a (win7) user logs on with a roaming profile true remote connection. The user gets a black background. The look and feel of the windows are also a bit different. I think it's because the terminal server wants to load the theme of the user, buth it can't. Because can't be loade on the terminal server. I want to set up the terminal server so that they all have the same windows classical theme.…

Hi, so this is also my first DNS setup, but i know nothing about DNS, i dont know how it works or what its for HAHA! all i know is its something to do with the internet, correct. Very new to this and keen to learn.. had a play around with setting one up but as you could immagine didnt get far, I guess my question right now is how exactly does it work and what exactly is it for, and maybe do i need one What lead me to setting up DNS was the fact that i have a DHCP server configured and i want the DHCP server to issue the DNS of the server not the router, eg, the DHCP server is 192.168.0.2 and so i want a DHCP lease to be IP: 192.168.0.xxx Gateway: 192.168.0…

As it is such a common role for a Windows 2008 server, i suggest adding a category of topics for Active Directory. DNS is already there, but for more hardcore AD related issues a separate category for AD would be nice.

Hi, My client has a share on their SBS2008 server that they use to track work and to do this they sort by Modified date. Recently they have noticed a speight of random old files appearing at the top of the list with new modified dates. I cannot work out why. I know this is a vague description of whats going on but at this stage I'm still looking for clues as to why this is hapenning. can anyone offer any clues or point me in the right direction? Thanks Mark

Hello all, first post here. I have a 2008 R2 terminal server that by all accounts is working fine. I have one particular user that I gave a new laptop to (W7 Pro, updated fully), and he can not print to his redirected printer. When you are in the remote server the redirected printer shows up and everything looks fine. If you try to print, it does nothing. If you try to print a test page from the redirected printer properties, it fails instantly. I can not figure out why this one machine can not seem to handle redirected print jobs. I just reformatted it last week and ran all windows updates. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b199/TTU98SS/Capture2.png http://i…

Here's the quick and dirty of it, our SSL cert signed by our CA has expired. Typically the CA emails the requester before it expires and warns them but the requester was a former employee, his email was disabled when he left and therefore the warnings are well somewhere in email limbo. Nothing we can do about that now only make better choices in the future. But the issue is that now that it has expired I cannot seem to just press the renew button. I go into IIS 7 on our server 2008 sbs server, in our domain I go to server certificates. I select the expired cert from the center pane and press the renew button on the right. I select "Renew an existing certificate using a…

Afternoon everyone, came across this site, thought I'd ask the question. I work in a school, we have a .gov.uk domain name, we recently employed a company to build a VLe - virtual learing environment in short a web based interface that allows students, parents and teachers access to configured resources. Moodle. Anyway, annoyingly the builders haven't followed the spec originally layed out. Externally we have a domain name of www.xschoolvle.co.uk this has been associated with an IP on the VLe server to which external trafic is forwarded - no problems. However they, the builders, have configured the VLe in such a way that the content of the VLe can only be accesse…

One was placed at OU, lets say A. Another node located at OU B. I have the domain users group added to the local Administrator group and was given FULL CONTROL on both servers. Server A does not apply the GPO on the ACL for D drive (.\Users group is within the ACL) hence, the domain users (With Admin access) does not facing any issue access to D drive. However for server B, the GPO applied and it will remove .\users group. The domain users are not allowed to access D drive, it will throw "Access …
