  1. Hi, Finally I can post my video tutorial, it explains how to migrate a DC and a FS from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. I hope you can find this video helpful and if you have comments / suggestions, answer to this topic!

  2. Recently I had a VMware ESXi (4.1 and 5.0 are the same) environment and creating three VM server (Windows 2008 R2 Standard). I found a interesting thing is whenever I manually changed the ESXi host time a big value let's say 5mins or 10mins. And roughly within one hour later, all three VMs have been changed the time, like "The system time has changed to ?2011?-?12?-?29T07:27:38.500000000Z from ?2011?-?12?-?29T07:22:41.502723100Z." EventID is 1, and user is "system". I checked everything with the w32time service inside the windows registry and disable all NTP, even disable w32time service. This one seems to happen again and again. Then I enable the logging with w32t…

  8. So I am new to this forum, new to Microsoft Server products and today I setup my first Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard. I followed a toturial on how to setup Active Directory and DNS. Then I setup DHCP, which all work properly. Also for school, I had to make a bulk import, and with help from a youtube tutorial I made it to work and have now a Active Directory filled with users in there devision maps. What I wanted to do now was giving each user a homefolder, profile map etc. So I began to read on the internet, searching and watching tutorials, but I just don't understand the difference between folder redirection / profile maps / homefolders what they do etc..…

I'll try not to rant. This used to be easy. Now it's not. I went to Server Manager. I added the File Services Role. I installed the Windows Server 2003 File Serices and the Indexing Service. I rebooted. The Indexing Service is running. I checked "Always search file names and contents" in the search options. Searches for a folder containing files with the searched-for text fail. Some similar threads talk about enabling disks for indexing. I don't know how to do that. There's a whole lot of stuff out there about adding folders to libraries and somehow enabling indexing on them but (say what?) - hey - there's got to be an easy way to do this. No? I know I ca…

Folks, Any one recommend a good online (cloud) back up service that will allow their service to be network mapped? This way the back up can just save there instead of a second local drive. Thank you. Ed

If this is in the wrong section i'm sorry, this is my first visit. Hi all, I have recently been trying out the "shutdown -i" command via cmd. The problem is that one of the computers connected to the domain will not shutdown. I am attempting to do this from the DC and am using the built-in administrator account so i am in the domain admin group. it's weird as I can get the shutdown -i to work on all computers but one. Cheers for all your help..

Okay I am about to shred my MCP on 2003 server. Or maybe there is something I am missing here. No laughing please. Question: I just installed a 2008 R2 server. Added it to our domain. I am trying to set up shares on the network and my test user can read but not write to folder area, unless they are domain admin. I gave him full access via NTFS and Share permissions and get an error "You do not have permission to save in this directory. See the administrator to obtain permission". Our users connect via Citrix, and I mapped a drive manually in DOS. Still, no cigar.

  17. Hiya, I have a problem adding instalation software to a group policy. I have created one, I've got a user whom I want to install firefox when he logs on on his account. I've added him to Administrators group and the folder with the package is in the network and is shared to everyone and when I search for the package in the Edit console of a group policy and add the package I get an error message "Operation failed, unable to find information about software emplacement. Run software check to make sure the software is correct" (sorry, my English is not proficient). What do I do?

We have Outlook 2007 email. My mother thinks she did something when she was fooling around with it. Now every time we get an email, and then read it, and then leave Outlook and return, the email is gone. Not in the inbox (where it should normally be) and not in the other Outlook folders. Nowhere. Again and again. I have used the search function and tried to find the emails but they are gone totally from the computer--not in any folders in or out of outlook. They immediately become deleted permanently. Any idea what she could have done to cause this?

  20. Hey everyone. We got an issue with our Windows Server 2008 R2. we are hosting some Counter-Strike servers from it. the problem is, people with an ip that starts with "77" can't join our server. so we tried a few things, i made an allowlist in the firewall but that didnt help. now, one of my mates has 2 servers in the same hosting center as our server, 1 that runs on the same network as mine and 1 that runs on another. and just to inform you guys, my ip on the server also starts with 77, same for my mate. so when he tries to ping our server from the one on the same network it works fine. but when he tries from the one outside the network, he gets timed ou…

Hi everyone I am thinking to get a server and install Win2008 R2 Enterprise edition. My plan is to create 4 virtual machines. The first one is going to be the active directory the second VM is going to be an SQL server the third VM is going to be sharepoint and the fourth VM maybe a print server, not sure yet. I am no expert with Windows and I just want to ask whether this setup can cause any sort of problems because everything are hosted by virtual machines. Also when you install Win2008 R2 does that include Actice directory or AD is a separate installation? Many thanks goude

Hello everyone Could anyone please help me understand the difference between Hyper-V and SCVMM? I am the systems engineer of a small college and being mainly a Linux environment, windows user profiles are becoming a problem. For that reason we are planning to get a Windows Server that will run 4 virtual machines. VM1= for Windows Server 2008 VM2= for an SQL Server VM3= for Sharepoint VM4= maybe a print server In order to manage these VMs I was looking at Microsoft's Hyper-V and SCVMM but I find it difficult to understand the difference. Could you please advise on what would be best for my case? Many thanks
