I have Windows Server 2008 Enterprise as my primary DC, and I would like to add a second DC that is running Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard. When I run the AD setup on the 2003 box it gives me this error: I do not have the DNS role installed on my primary DC. My DNS is handled by my Untangle router/firewall. Does that need to be there for this to work? Thanks, Tommy

Let me start off with saying that I am new to this forum and am not sure if this has already been answered. Also I may be tech savvy but i'm new to server 2008 so if possible I would prefer step-by-step instructions. I will attach a photo of my problem to this post. This is the first time I used this function so I don't know how long this problem has existed. I don't think I did anything wrong and I think that this is some type of system error. Hello! I had a couple questions that hopefully can get answered. 1) I want to install Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition solely for the use of letting other computers connect to the server through a remote desktop connection. (i.e. they would have their own desktop and programs etc) I have been reading around and what it looks like is that there is only a maximum of 2 concurrent remote desktop connections allowed? Does it only include administrative accounts? What if I made one administrative account and three standard accounts. - The 1 administrative account for me to install applications etc. - The other three accounts for my users. Really, th…

Hi all, I have an application running on Windows Server 2008. The application is sending and receiving packets. Upon certain time for the packet sent by my application, I get ICMP TTL expired message. After some time Windows 2008 gives enetreset exception and after that no packets are sent to my application. I am using UDP to send and receive packets and my application requires that. Can someone explain why this issue is seen and when enetreset will be raised? Also this issue is not seen when i used Windows Server 2003

hi there, i'm struggling with the MS 70-642 "configuring network infrastructure" book. right now i'm in chapter 7 "connecting to networks" and i want to configure a NAT server and client. somehow i can't manage to get the nat client to connect to the internet. i followed the instructions in the book, my configuration looks like this: 2 virtual machines in virtualbox, each running windows server 2008 r2 server 1: - installed the ad ds, dhcp, dns and network policy and access services roles - assigned 2 netword adapters for the machine. one that uses NAT (resp. my host computer's configuration = internet access. my host resides in a domain environment) and one…

My server is Windows Server 2008 R2, and my clients are all Windows 7 x64 I can transfer files between clients and the transfer speed is around 65MB/sec, but transferring files to the server it slows to a crawl of around 3-6MB/sec. Also server becomes inaccessible to other clients while that painfully slow file copy is in progress. On another possible related note. If i right click in one of the folders on a network drive and click new folder, nothing happens, but if i try it again it says "New Folder" already exists. Refreshing doesn't seem to show new files for a long time. Also If I open excel or word for that matter and attempt to save a file on the network d…

I need to backup/copy the mapped Z:\fileshares on 2K3 server to D:\bk on 2K8 server folder that has 3 folders each containing an Access database. This folder is located on a Windows Server 2003 and the z is mounted on a Windows Server 2008. I want to create a Scheduled Task on the 08 server that copies this folder nightly into new directory named with the date "YearDayMonth". I've looked into FastCopy and RichCopy but I don't see the ability to create this directory. Any example of hot to create this batch would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi everyone. sorry if this is in the wrong section, this is only my second thread. So, I've installed Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition for educational purposes in my home. I've connected three desktop PC's and have four users in AD. I've created a FolderRedirection group policy to redirect all the users files "My documents, music, pictures etc.) the GP applies perfectly to existing users and all is well. However when a create a new user and add it to the FolderRedirction group, the policy does not take effect. I've tried using "gpupdate /force" and also deleting the local user directories from the C:\ drive however it just logs the user on with a temp profile.... …

Hello All, I have a question about trying to setup a client computer to connect from a home-based office. Here is our current setup Main Server in the Office running Windows Server 2008 R2, it is configured as a Domain Controller and the client computer is connected to the domain while in the office. The network has a Netgear VPN in place. We have shared folders and databases on the server that need to be accessed from either on the road (hotel room) or from a home office. My question is what do I need to setup in order to have the client computer able to connect from a home office location? I have tried using Shrewsoft VPN Client software to establish a co…

Over the Easter Break I thought I would build a new server at work via VNC on VPN but the blasted thing wont present the login boxes on Ctrl+alt+Delete over VPN (VNC is installed). works fine on older 2003 servers and winXP so can import the registry if anyone knows of a regedit fix?? I have also noticed that the Ctrl Alt Delete function wont work on windows 7 workstations either. If the server/workstation is already logged in VNC will work fine. Please any ideas?
