  1. Google has teamed up with Udacity to make available a free course in Android development available to all – complete with videos, quizzes, course materials and forums. The course is called “Developing Android Apps: Android Fundamentals,” and it provides everything you need to learn how to make an Android app step-by-step; provided, that is, you already have a basic understanding of programming in general. The Android course is presented by Google Developer Advocates Reto Meier, Dan Galpin and Katherine Kuan, and also features personalized feedback and direct guidance from coaches for students who are also enrolled in Udacity’s paid, guided subscription program. The aim…

  2. Peggo is a simple web service that takes your favorite YouTube videos, whether they're music, podcasts, or other programming, and saves them as audio files so you can listen to them later or offline. It even removes silence to keep file sizes small, and normalizes volume so you don't get surprised if you're listening through headphones. Peggo is the spiritual successor to previously mentioned Dirpy, which is long gone, but not forgotten. Using the service is simple: Just paste in a YouTube video you want audio from, select the time-range you want to record (by default, it's set to the entire video), and toggle options like volume normalization and silence removal. E…

  3. An extensive research paper from a security specialist revealed earlier this week that governments and other third-parties with malicious intentions would be able to use certain tools in iOS to extract information from iPhones and other iOS devices, without the user’s consent or knowledge. Apple has already issued a response on the matter, denying the existence of backdoors in its products, and further emphasizing the security and privacy features of iOS. “We have designed iOS so that its diagnostic functions do not compromise user privacy and security, but still provides needed information to enterprise IT departments, developers and Apple for troubleshooting technica…

  5. A new variant of the Android ransomware Simplocker has been detected and it comes with encryption capabilities for archives, which is the preferred format of many backup apps for mobile devices. Security researchers at ESET, who uncovered the first trace of the crypto-malware for mobile in the first place, warn that the fresh strain has been prepared for targeting a larger audience, as the ransom message is now in English and the demanded fee increased to $300 / €222. Cybercriminals seem to have learned their lessons during the test run on the Russian-speaking victims and included 7z, ZIP and RAR compression formats on the list of files the malware should be encrypt…

  6. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has confirmed that his company will amalgamate all major versions of Windows into one operating system. Speaking on the company's quarterly earnings call today, Nadella told analysts Microsoft will "streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system." Describing the implications of the change, Nadella said "this means one operating system that covers all screen sizes." Previously, under the management of Steve Ballmer, Microsoft had multiple teams producing different versions of Windows working separately from each other. "Now," Nadella said, "we have one team with a common architec…

  7. I have a newer Dell desktop and it has XP on it. I have run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor and apparently it is compatible. What I would like to do is set up a dual boot system, if possible. I have the dell disk for Windows 7. I have installed simple straight forward operating systems but I have never set up a dual boot. I'm not sure even how do go about it. Any help would be appreciated.

  8. Microsoft's reboot of its operating system is expected to be released at some point next year. The Microsoft Windows operating system is possibly the most successful piece of software in the history of computing. It is certainly the iconic package on which Microsoft Corporation has built its reputation and status as the worlds biggest producer of computer software. Windows 8 Slated That Microsoft has taken a bit of a battering recently, not least because its most recent iteration of the Windows operating system, Windows 8, could be reasonably described as one of the most disastrous software releases of all time. Battered critically and unsuccessful commercia…

I know this user so we need to take this seriously.... Rich-M My First-Ever Virus Alert Submitted by Ken Dwight on Tue, 07/15/2014 - 07:33 Share to: Facebook Twitter Google Plus LinkedIn Digg Delicious In the 12+ years I’ve been operating as The Virus Doctor™, I have never issued a general Virus Alert to all of my clients and subscribers to my e-mail list – until now. In the past week I have learned of a very widespread virus outbreak that could ensnare even the most cautious users of the Internet and e-mail. This outbreak crippled a major hospital in the Texas Medical Center, in Houston, and surely many other computer users around the United States. But …

  11. I've tried this out and it works really well. I haven't tested it on Windows 8. The target platforms are Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. Windows: If you've got some old emails you'd like to retrieve from Windows Live, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird, Mailviewer can do so—no installation required. Mailviewer can view an email database from Outlook Express, Windows Vista Mail, Windows Live Mail, and Thunderbird. Just open it up, browse to your mail database, and you'll be able to see your messages as well as search or extract individual ones. The best part? It's completely portable, so you don't need to …

  12. I think this is a good thing! I wonder if FireFox will follow suit.... Those determined users that continue to use torrents will just keep on getting infected. A number of tech pundits and helpful "you should install these apps" lists often feature uTorrent as a must-have BitTorrent app. Google, it seems, would disagree. According to a recent article from TorrentFreak, the search giant has allegedly placed the uTorrent installation executable on its naughty list for Google Chrome. Some of those attempting to download the latest build of uTorrent from its official site have been hit with a warning within Chrome that the uTorrent.exe file is "malicious" and that Chrom…

  14. I have an HP printer but I can not afford to feed it, due to the tri-color cartilages. I bought a Canon wireless printer and my 2 other HP computers can see it and use it. My Pavilion s-1217 can not see it. My printer has been checked by Canon and my Router has been checked and upgraded by Belkin. Both are working fine. I have called HP several times about this computer. The last time, your tech downloaded the HP Print and Scan Doctor software but it can not see this printer. Canon suggested that the computer may not be able to use IPv4.

  15. Last month we learned Google was developing a new version of Chrome OS codenamed Athena. Now the company is offering a first look at the updated operating system, and it looks like a huge change from the version of Chrome OS we know today. What we get is a very early first draft, so keep in mind that the final version is sure to be way more polished. The redesigned version of Chrome OS still looks pretty cool though, offering a new card stack UI similar to the current Chrome app for Android or the recent apps menu introduced with Android L. Google’s François Beaufort describes the new design as a “collection of windows with some simple window management,” adding that i…

Does anyone know for sure which if any version of Acronis True Image works with Windows 7 64-bit, not just to CREATE images but to reliably RESTORE them? I see making the backup isn't the issue but restoring often is.

In an area you aren't familiar with and just want your iPhone or iPad to get you home safely? Luckily, Siri can help you do just that with help from the built-in Maps app. All you have to do is ask! How to get directions back home with Siri and Maps Press and hold the Home button to launch Siri. Say something like "Take me home." or "How do I get home from here?" Siri will pull information from your own contact card and give you directions home from wherever you are. When the Maps app launches, tap Start in the upper right hand corner to begin voice navigation. Remember that in order for this to work, you'll need to have your home address saved in the C…

  18. A flurry of tweets with the hashtag #MH17, referring to the recent Malaysian aviation tragedy, have been discovered to be nothing but a lure to unsuspecting users to land on malware-delivering web pages. Crooks are quick to gain advantages from any sort of event in order to promote malicious links that generally lead to compromising computers and loss of financial details. According to Trend Micro, some Twitter messages written in Indonesian and using the aforementioned hashtag, contain short links to domains that have been associated to a variant of Zeus Trojan as well as the Sality malware. However, it appears that in this case the cybercrooks are seeking to in…

  21. NEW YORK—How do you feel about living under the same roof as a robot? Not a robot such as Roomba that will assume your household vacuuming chores. But instead a robot named Jibo, who if Cynthia Breazeal has her way, will become a newly adopted member of your family. Indeed, Jibo, the brainchild or rather robot-child of MIT professor and social robotics pioneer Breazeal, is being called the world's first family robot. Breazeal's long-term vision is to bring robots into our everyday lives. "We're about humanizing technology," she said in an interview. Along those lines, Jibo is no toy robot. The Wi-Fi connected robot stands just under a foot tall tall and carries t…

  24. Google is the preferred search engine for millions of people, with the giant company having many other web-related products available for users, all built around, or in relationship with search and ads. While most users know how to perform a search, use Gmail or navigate with Maps, they may not be aware of some of the nifty hidden tricks Google has included in its online services. Business Insider has listed some of the useful Google services-related features that you can check out right away. For example, typing “Atari Breakout” in Google Image search will let you play a quick game in your browser, where you’ll have to destroy blocks made of actual images. A differ…

  25. By this point, most of us are fully addicted to our smartphones. And when we find ourselves without Wifi or data service, our most direct connection to everything becomes almost useless. That’s where GoTenna comes in. The device is launching into pre-order today, and lets users create their own closed network on which they can communicate. Here’s how it works: Let’s say you’re out in the woods camping with a big group. You keep one GoTenna in your bag or near your person and it connects to your phone via BluetoothLE. Since they’re sold in pairs, you can hand off the other GoTenna to someone else in the group, who also pairs it with their own smartphone. Let’s say…
