Your phone is probably the most personal device you own. You carry it with you at all times, and it can access a large chunk of your most sensitive data. Here's how to keep it secure using just the basic tools provided by Google. The following features and services are available to nearly every Android device without third-party software or services. As we mentioned in our Lifehacker Pack, Lookout is a great security suite on top of what's already built in, but even if you don't want to install extra software, the following are the most basic security measures everyone can (and should) set up as soon as you get your phone. Remember, the user is the weakest link in the …

Want to check out the new Windows 10 Technical Preview but find yourself not invited to the party because you run OS X? Or are you the cautious type that wants to check out this latest release, but you don't feel comfortable nuking your current install? Here's how you can play with Microsoft's newest operating system by installing into a VirtualBox virtual machine. Note: The following screenshots were taken on OS X, but the process is the same on the Windows platform. 1. Sign up for the Technical Preview. This will give you access to a product key as well as the .ISO downloads you need. If you don't want a product key, you can download the .ISO files direct from Mi…

Yesterday, we began an exciting new chapter in the Windows story with the announcement of Windows 10 and what it means for our enterprise customers. As part of our new approach to building and delivering Windows 10 to customers, we want to make sure we get feedback in real-time as the development process is ongoing. Getting an error code 0x0000001 at startup. It will not go into Safe mode [F8] just keeps looping over and over, this unit runs windows 8. Also no sticker with the product key so I can't reload the OS, help? I was able to get the recovery process by Pressing f9 at the right time but after the recovery was done, it back to the same looping process, I am guessing my only hope now is to do an OS install? If so, how can I tell which version of windows 8.1 was originally installed on this unit and also since there isn't a product key anywhere on this unit, how will I license it when it goes to the net?

The potential problems this recent revelation highlights are immense. I set up a dual boot Puppy Linux Precise 5.7.1 / Windows XP Pro arrangement earlier this year in order to provide safer internet activity in the light of Microsoft support for XP finishing - how ironic. But of course the bash problem goes beyond one for home users of Linux based systems because so many online servers utilize bash as does much smart technology. I'm keeping an eye open with regard to what I should do for my own system, advice so far is varied and not entirely clear for a user of only limited understanding of the underlying structure and workings of Linux. Apparently this weakness …

Normally the last thing I would suggest is a refurbished hard drive but at $19.99 they can go a long way servicing used computers.....and honestly I would rather have a refurbished WD drive rather than a new Seagate or Hitachi. Microsoft is preparing its first official look at the future of Windows next week, during an invite-only event in San Francisco. While a number of leaks have unearthed features and changes in an upcoming release of Windows, currently codenamed Threshold, the naming of the release is still largely a mystery. Referred to by many as Windows 9, the next major release of Microsoft's operating system could simply be called "Windows." There's plenty of evidence to suggest that, and a new report from Reutersclaims Microsoft will unveil a new name for its Windows product on Tuesday, which could be Windows 9, Windows, or an entirely different brand. Microsoft currently refers …

Last night, researchers at Malwarebytes noticed strange behavior on sites like Last.fm, The Times of Israel and The Jerusalem Post. Ads on the sites were being unusually aggressive, setting off anti-virus warnings and raising flags in a number of Malwarebytes systems. After some digging, researcher Jerome Segura realized the problem was coming from Google's DoubleClick ad servers and the popular Zedo ad agency. Together, they were serving up malicious ads designed to spread the recently identified Zemot malware. A Google representative has confirmed the breach, saying "our team is aware of this and has taken steps to shut this down." "That's when we thought, somethi…

This is my main desktop system: Intel I-5 Quad Core 4670, Gigabyte Motherboard Z87M-D38, 128 GB Crucial SSD drive, WD Raptor Sata III 300 GBb Hard Drive, 500 GB WD 7200 Rpm Sata III 32 meg hard drive, 8 Gb 1600 Ddr3 A-Data ram, EVGA GTX 280 video card, Pioneer DVD-RW 24X, Seasonic 750 watt Psu and Windows 7 Pro and its about 2 years old. Lately I have been having a few issues with occasional BSOD and in my experience, 98% of those are caused by ram or hard drive and that is where I believe my system is the weakest. A-Data Ram is not great and as much as I love Crucial Ram, Crucial ssd drives don't have a great service record. I have Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3…

Microsoft is busy preparing a "Windows Technical Preview" for later this month, but the software maker is also privately testing an "Office Technical Preview" for the next version of its popular Office suite. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s Office plans tell The Verge that the company has been distributing copies of a future version of Office to partners and testers recently, providing an early look at new features. While testing is in the early stages, we understand Microsoft is adding the "Tell Me" helper found in its Office Online apps to the desktop versions. Tell Me sits at the top of documents as a type of help and search tool. It’s similar in function to Clipp…

My touchscreen pc has lag problem "when scrolling", otherwise the reaction time is good. I am suspecting this older pc as being the cause of the lag since it's only 1gb RAM and the processor should be around a 2.0 Pentium, the jukebox software [Etouch] which I am using, it's developer said "Disk access is also a thing you will want to look at. I use an SSD as the boot drive where E-touch is installed". What do you guys think, what would be the best I can do to speed up that lag time? Get the fastest HDD available, or use a more powerful touchscreen pc, or would this need a touchscreen pc with the best graphics card?
