Are registry cleaners a good idea or bad? I have done some reading and some say they are bad and some say they are bad. Has any one here had any experience with them good or bad. Or are they even necessary looks like Microsoft would build it into the operating system if it were needed. Sammy Castagna

Is there some such concept as "residual electricity"??? There was a problem with a computer at work...it's a new Dell running WinXP Pro...everything's fine, I go to lunch and come back to a blank screen that won't wake up from power-save/sleep mode!! I do the obvious and check connections, making sure they're secure and whatnot. I turn off the computer and turn it back on a few times, to no effect! Tech Support suspects some kind of a "power management" issue -- whatever that is -- and suggests that I leave the system off for a few minutes, literally, to let things "clear"...whatever that means. Sure enough, however: it works! So now I'm here asking, b…

Over the last three days, I've tried to access two separate youtube links on two separate occasions to find the W98 system freezes as the page is initially displayed. No keybd/mouse response. Required a hardware reboot to recover. I don't normally access youtube, but had done so in the previous week without problems. First link was: The first time the problem occurred, I did a quick disk check - lost clusters found (and repaired). I retried the same link with number crunching background activity disabled - with the same result. Repeated disk check and then attempted to run defrag - incomplete after hitting a bad sector. This was repaired by running …

Reported here and elsewhere, it appears the WGA server is down and any attempts to validate will fail, leading Vista to think it is not a valid license and disable a number of features in the OS include Aero. My recommendation is that you DO NOT do anything that would cause Vista to attempt to validate, such as downloading software from MS that requires validation. WGA critics, let's here what you have to say. -- Tom Porterfield

There are profound technical reasons why Windows is crap. This is just one of them: Let's look at the WinMain function called by every Windows program. It has the following prototype: int WINAPI WinMain(HINSTANCE hInstance, HINSTANCE hPrevInstance, LPSTR lpCmdLine, int nCmdShow) hPrevInstance is a legacy from 16-bit days. If there was an existing instance of the program running, the new instance needed to know about it because programs running under 16-bit Windows shared the same address space. Consequently, the programmer had to take measures to ensure that the two instances didn't conflict. Most programmers simply limited the application to …

Previous "Service Packs" have often been software rewrites - in file size nearly a re-install. Those rewrites have benefited from an infinity of combinations of hardware, software, user settings/errors, and from an army of professional malware defenders fighting guerrillas who attack vulnerabilities just for the fun of it. Considering past SPs, I wonder what Vista SP1 will include. My guess is that SP1 will not add much in the way of security, but will push it further into the background and less intrusive. Perhaps massive usage data will enable security functions to be safely trimmed and made faster for most. Will SP1 add stability? Vista overall…

XP Death Watch http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/05/27/XP-deathwatch-T-minus-five-weeks_1.html Even though it has had its own problems of late, Windows XP remains the most-used version of Windows. The newest data from Web metrics vendor Net Applications, for example, pegs XP as driving 73 percent of the personal computers that went online last month, five times the nearest competitor, Microsoft's own Windows Vista. Which is why an impending deadline five weeks from today is important. According to Microsoft, June 30 is the last day it will permit retailers and OEMs to sell the nearly seven-year-old operating system. [ Make your voice heard.…

I m not sure what to think of Ballmer, with his monkey dancing and all, but I don't think I like him. I just wonder if he has been tempered by all the people asking him "what is it with that vista, why did you release it with so many problems?" questions by friends and technical savvy folk. I'm sure he might not be accepting how bad vista is out in the open. but he has a problematic product in his hands.. If we had a way to snoop into what he really thinks about vista, I think it would be a big surprise for fanboys. I'm sure he is wishing vista would just go away... perhaps that's why they are pushing hard to get win7 ready.

I apologize for posting this article as it has absolutely nothing to do with Windows or Vista. However, the majority of current and retired members of our military have a right to know. I hope some of the people reading this will voice their opinions Berkeley to Marine Corps: You're Not Welcome BERKELEY, Calif. Local officials in this liberal city say it's time for the U.S. Marines to move out. The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and "if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests." The measure passed this week by a vote of 8-1. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,32…

http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/vista/10_things_i_warned_microsoft_about_windows_vista.html this is an article by Joe Wilcox and he states: "I worked as an analyst when Microsoft developed Windows Vista. Execs asked for my advice, and they got it. Did they listen?" But of course the vistaboys and frank king of the apes, will just discredit him too... it seems like they think that their own experience is better than US pros.. yes me included... with over 25 years of computer experience, I know when an OS is POS. let the mud flow freely for vista! let the truth shine, and THEN lets decide if we should use it or not... not get it shoved down our t…
