Hey pete so I am here again with similar issue from last year, wish I could have remembered which thread that was I can follow whatever was done in it but sorry can't find it without having to go through every post I have ever made on this forum. I am not sure if this problem is virus related so want to rule it out first before looking at possible hardware issues. When it's working right it's fine and fast but hanging too regularly for the past couple months. Anyway so I ran Mbam, Adwcleaner and JRT and will post the logs here but FRST 64 whenever I try to run it as Admin I am getting the attached prompt but windows defender is NOT turned on so I am confused, help …

Verizon/AOL has sent out a notice to users stating that they need to update their email client server settings. For a POP3 account, this means changing: incoming.verizon.net --> pop.verizon.net, port 995, SSL enabled outgoing.verizon.net --> SMTP.verizon.net, port 465, SSL enabled So I did this for someone today. Everything worked. I didn't expect the email client would proceed to download emails from about a year ago. It downloaded over 3,000 emails. I guess the new server doesn't know that these emails had already been downloaded. I called AOL tech support. The person who answered ended up telling me that they were actually from billing and couldn't ad…

Affects all unpatched Linux, Mac, Chrome OS and Windows PCs As long as Adobe's Flash Player plugin is still alive and installed on your personal computer, it will only cause damage to it. Adobe Flash is often described as a security vulnerability, as it it's full of security flaws and Adobe won't patch them as fast as they should. The latest, as reported by Reuters, is said to let hackers plant malicious software on your personal computer. The malware was discovered by security firm Kaspersky Lab and it's called FinSpy or FinFisher, which is usually used for surveillance by law enforcement agencies. According to the report, Kaspersky Lab was actively trac…

I am wondering if anyone can offer any advice / recommendations re NAS backup systems? I have an ever-expanding collection of videos, currently standing at about 3TB (and I want backups of everything too) and I am having to back up between USB connected external hard drives. I am looking at something along the lines of a 4-bay NAS system which will allow hot-swapping of drives, and don’t need anything in the way of encryption or RAID setups. So nothing fancy – just an expandable home networked file system, I guess…. Trouble is, I don’t really understand the blurb and am spoilt for choice – Google it, or look on Amazon, and I am presented with a thousand options and …

Company admits that more users were actually hacked in 2013 The Yahoo hack saga continues, this time with more information provided by the company itself, who reckoned in a statement that more users were actually hacked in 2013 than it previously revealed. Yahoo said in September 2016 that 500 million accounts got hacked in 2013 as part of what it described as a state-sponsored attack, albeit absolutely no specifics on the hacking group or the country behind the breach were provided. Yahoo, however, released an updated statement in December to bump the figure to 1 billion, saying that it discovered evidence that twice as many accounts were hacked than it init…

When it comes to trying to breach the data on iPhones, scammy text messages are apparently all the rage. In just the last year, we’ve had the text that could instantly crash an iPhone, and the flaw that allowed hackers to steal your saved passwords with a single text. Now, some Apple users are reporting another possible hack attempt, this time through their iMessage accounts. Mashable reports that Apple users, including one of the publication’s own employees, have been suffering hack attacks tied to their iMessage and Apple ID accounts, both on their computers and smartphones. The issue, which Apple support says is likely an attempt by hackers to steal personal info…

With social media, gathering information has never been easier, making Business Email Compromise the land of milk and honey for cybercriminals. Recently, ransomware like WannaCry or Petya has generated dramatic headlines around the globe. The pernicious online threats have become a shooting star among malware vectors, gaining notoriety and troubling millions of businesses and individuals alike. However, another cyberthreat lurking beneath the surface and causing even greater damage is business email compromise (BEC). Unlike most other cybercrime activity, BEC entirely depends upon social engineering. It involves a faked email from a co-worker or corporate exec…

On a Windows 2000 Server domain the last 4 or 5 times we've expired passwords we have had Windows XP users call and tell us they didn't get the password expiration warning when they logon to the computer and they are unable to access the exchange server or log into the internet (Websense). It's never the same users each time nor is it all of our XP users. So we have to uncheck the box for User must change password at next logon and then change it manually. Any ideas as to why this happens?

I'm looking to create audio files from old tapes using Windows 7. I tried Windows' Sound Recorder and Audacity using the laptop's mic input. That works but the sound is poor. I also tried Roxio's Easy VHS to DVD 3 Plus. That works pretty good. Does anyone have experience doing this?

A new tool analyses the ransom note and the encrypted file in order to offer the appropriate decryption tool - if it exists. The success of ransomware means the number cyber criminals are looking to cash in on the file-encrypting malware appears to be ever increasing, whether they build it themselves or buy it from distributors in underground online marketplaces. With new ransomware variants appearing all the time - recent new discoveries include PrincessLocker and Defray - and malicious developers continually updating tried and tested ransomware families such as Locky, it can be difficult for the average user to understand what they've been infected with should…

The Retefe banking trojan is now using the EternalBlue exploit that helped spread WannaCry to make attacks more effective. A trojan banking malware campaign has returned and now it's leveraging EternalBlue -- the leaked NSA surveillence exploit -- to target Swiss financial institutions. Developed by the NSA but revealed to the world by a hacking group, the EternalBlue Windows security flaw exploits a version of Windows' Server Message Block (SMB) networking protocol to spread itself across an infected network using worm-like capabilities. It was by using the EternalBlue exploit that May's WannaCry ransomware attack was able to spread so quickly. The tool …

I'm working on an HP Mini. It's here just for a checkup. Last week it seemed good. Nothing needed. I put it aside while. Now it won't boot properly. When you turn it on, it gets to the screen giving you the option to choose F9 to change boot device order or F10 to get to the BIOS. Then the BIOS screen shows briefly as expected. Then it goes back to the F9 / F10 screen and stays there. Pressing F9 or F10 does nothing. I've pulled the hard drive - same issue. I'd expect it to say that no boot device was available. I swapped out RAM. Removed AC and battery power. Pulled the BIOS battery. Problem persisted. While the hard drive was out, I ran chkdsk on it - no errors…

Could CPU usage replace adverts in the future? The Pirate Bay is experimenting with cryptocurrency mining as an alternative way to raise revenue rather than rely on advertisements. If you visit a certain breed of webpage in the quest for material such as pornography or gambling, you are often inundated with irritating clusters of ads howling for your attention. Some of these pages may also contain malvertising, in which visitors are led on to fraudulent websites, to download malicious files, or are faced with their browsers being blocked until they agree to download nuisance or frankly dangerous software packages. While certain kinds of targeted ads can be…

The app was compromised for almost a month Piriform, the company that makes the popular CCleaner application, just announced that their application was hijacked and used to gather information about its users and send it to an unknown party. Hackers usually prefer to penetrate insufficiently secured servers and get the data they want in that manner, but that usually means that webmasters and programmers were not doing their job. Compromising the code for an application to gather information about user’s devices before that app is distributed is on a different level. Piriform hasn’t said anything about how their systems were penetrated or how the executable w…

Following Google’s lead earlier this year, Bing has added fact checking tags to search results. A fact check label might now appear below results from Snopes, PolitFact, and other fact checking organizations, making it much easier to see their ruling on any given claim. Rather than having to click into the link, the site’s verdict — true, false, or somewhere in between — will now be pulled out into the search preview. begun adding its own fact checking tools. Google, meanwhile, began rolling out fact checking tags to its news sections late last year, before bringing them to search in April. Source: The Verge

Hi, My system is Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32bit. I have noted an error reported by the Windows Event Viewer that appears to relate to the .Net Framework v.4. This problem seems only to be associated with attempts to install Trusteer Rapport after having had to uninstall it for technical reasons. I have posted about Rapport in this forum before so need to state now that I am not really interested in having it on my system (my bank pushes customers to use it but they have given me assurances that I will not be disadvantaged by not using it). The reason I attempted to start the installation process was to try to discover what was causing the Rapport installer to…

Got a call from someone asking that I set up his new computer. It's a Wow computer. They run Linux. https://www.mywowcomputer.com Guy is a senior citizen. Wife recently deceased. He doesn't really know what he's going to do with machine. Well, he may use it to check out some travel sites. He's not expecting to do any printing. I know other users who just use a tablet and have no need to print. My thought is that he'd be better off with a tablet or a Windows laptop. Geez, that Wow computer cost $1,000 USD. He has a 30-day return policy. What you all say?
