I've been noticing lately that some of my programs (mostly the bigger memory hogs) fail to remove themselves from the processes list after I close them. The memory usage goes down to negligible levels, usually, but I can't help but feel that this is indicative of something more sinister. Has anyone heard of/seen a resolution to this kind of issue (apart from a rebuild; that's on the schedule, for when I get time) I'm on XP Pro SP1, with all of the critical updates that have been offered since the SP.

Since the Gamma release of vBulletin 3, the user information has been displayed along the top of all the posts in threads, and many people don't seem to like this, and are used to the older left-side-info style. As such, I've added a new option. Click the "Edit Options" link on the left side bar (if you're logged in) and you can now choose your thread viewing style. Let me know if you find anything wrong.

So far I have tried: Cleared the CMOS Checked that the ram i am using is the correct type - in this case PC100 Tried the motherboard both in and out of the case Tried both with all of the hdd, power led, speaker jumpers connected and disconnected (started by shorting the power switch with a screwdriver) Now the problem is, it turns on and the processor fan spins around and a little LED which is hard wired to the motherboard goes on but i get no beeping (or speaking as suggested by the Soyo website) to suggest that something is wrong and not…

Hi Everyone! I have a (rather, quite a few questions) to ask. Firstly, I have installed a sound card (that accepts 1 digital and 1 analogue audio input both at once). I've got front_audio installed using the motherboard's onboard audio system. Does this mean that my front_audio set won't give me any sound because all sound is going through my sound card? Secondly, I've got a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM installed. Does this mean that one has to use digital while the other one has to use analogue? Also, with the analogue 4-pin cables, is one of the wires actually meant to be missing (i.e. 4 connectors, 4 pins, but 1 connector leads to no where)? Thanks in advance!! …

Hello all. I just entered the world of WinXP about 3 weeks ago. I had visited Bob Gibson's grc.com and ran the XP fixes he offers. I'd like to suggest a WinXP Install FAQs so new XP users like myself can easily learn what to turn off and why, such as Universal PlugNPlay. Maybe also offer information such as WinXP's attempt to connect to Microsoft just by hitting the F3 key on the desktop to bring up the search window (thanks to Kerio Personal Firewall for pointing this out.)

Hi all. My dad is looking into getting a new system. We need a new motherboard, in the 100 USD range. We are getting: AMD Athlon 3000 Barton core 2x 512MB PC4000 sticks of memory 1x 160Gb SATA drive So, the board needs to support the 3000 Athlon, 1 Gb of memory (and fast, PC4000), and the SATA standard. We also need it to have legacy IDE ports for some of our older drives. Dont care what chipset it uses. Just want a good reliable motherboard for a fairly fast system. Overclocking is not a big priority, although some BIOS OC capabilities would be nice.

I'm looking for new gifs to use on the forum main page to replace the V images next to each folder. I found one and need the 2 more. Take a look at the attachment. That would be the gif to replace the one for new posts in forum. I need one that would have the screen unlit for no new posts and one with a lock on it for locked forums. I've been searching for these for a week now and can't find them.

I've got a GF3 with a Personal Cinema daughterboard on it. It has been performing beautifully, until recently. I now get audio fine, but the picture is a patern of black and white bars. Don't know if anyone's had experience with this oddball card or not ...

It is ALL aluminum. No plastic that I noticed anywhere. And it is so light, compared to the 10000 lb. Antec I replaced. Nice and roomy inside and the entire back panel is removeable with thumbscrews to pull out the MoBo tray, PCI cards included. Just have to disconnect the power supply connectors and it all comes out! The top has a USB/Firewire port setup, which I removed and replaced with the included top fan rig. It even comes with a floppy an…

Well I had to reboot my computer and it's been a few hours. As soon as I turned it on when it was rebooted, I saw that when I use the volume controls on my keyboard and the 'Connect' button which opens IE, it shows the volume in green or shows 'Connect' in green at the bottom left of my screen. The buttons still work but now I don't see the little indications of what point the volume is at and things like that. Can I get it back? It's not really a big deal, just something I'm picky about.

The other day I got off the computer, shut it down, took care of some things, then went back on a little later. Now, this was very odd. When turning it on I found that after one of the screens (for XP users, it was after I saw the 3 green rectangles go under the XP logo and then I was waiting to see "welcome".) after that one was blue, and I saw it for about a millisecond, then my computer restarted. I had not gotten to the desktop, I had not gotten my welcome message. So, on the "HP Invent" screen (first one), I hit F10 to begin system restore. This however didn't work. I chose the non-destructive system restore option, let it go, then it brought me to the screen with th…

I recently got a Radeon 9500 Saphire card. Its a great card by itself, but it has a unique feature. Its crippled. In reality, it was made from a 9700 core. They crippled 4 of the pipelines to sell it as a cheaper card. People realized this and modified the driver, so that the extra 4 pipelines could be used. Check out this site for more details: http://www.ocfaq.com/softmod/index.php You MUST get a 9500 that has the "L" shaped memory, not the "I" memory. The L memory is the crippled 9700 and is 256 bit, the I is 128 bit and is NOT a crippled 9700. You can softmod it as well, but it only turns in to a 9500 Pro. The 9700 NP 256-bit can turn into a full 9700…

Is this something I have to watch out for? Because I don't want my computer to be ruined because I opened like an EXE that had requirements for my vid card that weren't compatible, then it blows up and I'm out a lot of money.

Hey Ok, after my server has been running for a few days or so, and I open up IIS and I try to open the Properties window of one of my sites the window won't show. But then when I go to close IIS it won't close properly becouse it says a window is still open but it isn't. I can fix this by rebooting but I'm really getting sick of doing that. Has anybody had this happen, any possible solutions or reasons this is occuring ? Thanks for any responses regarding this

Everywhere I go these days people are warning about viruses and other malicious files. Is there anything right now that could help me against them? I have McAfee but I want to take the necessary precautions, considering I was hit by the MSBlast and that wasn't fun. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello everyone! As some of you (such as excaliber) may know, I've been building my own PC. Now, everything is set up and running- almost, that is. I've got 2 hard disks, one of which I don't know how i managed to format it, but I did. However, I don't know how to format the other disk anymore. The 2nd drive has nothing on it, and has no file system (new disk). The first disk is currently running WinXP Pro with NTFS (which can't be read by MS-Dos anyway). So, if you can help me in anyway to format the 2nd hard disk, please reply! Thanks in advance :(

This story seems to get more interesting with new press release, but this one seems pretty funny if nothing else. With Novell claiming to still own the Unix copyrights, this could have a huge impact on this case if there is actually anything behind the Novell claims. Read Full Story
