I found a quite powerful and useful tool lately, which deals with drive and printer mapping, configuration, active directory and policies. It makes scripting almost obsolete. It comes with a handy GUI, better than ScriptLogic if you ask me. I thought that some of you might be interested, because I was searching for such a tool long enough, and maybe some of you were too. Risk a look, you can download a trial also: http://www.usermanagementservice.com greetz, Antimend

thanks in advance for some info... in order to speed up my computer i recently decided to upgrade to WIN XP (home version) from my WIN 98 second edition. i called and ordered the upgrade from Gateway. during the initial stages of the upgrade i was asked to insert my WIN 98 disc. after looking everywhere i am unable to locate it. according to Gateway i will need to purchase the XP install rather than the upgrade since i lack the 98 disc. my daughter has a WIN 98 S E disc. would it work if i used her disc? i don't want problems w Microsoft down the road but do feel that i purchased my WIN 98 and one is enough. she has only one disc. is that all there was to WIN 98? i woul…

Hi Folks, Im new here and just popped my head in looking for some help on software I require. Imagine you have 10 laptops that you give out to members off staff regularly for a certain amount off days. Now imagine that these members of staff are a bit reluctant to return these laptops? Lets say you want to give out a laptop to someone for 3 days lone. Is there any software out there that you can use to make the laptop stop functioning after this time period has elapsed? Forcing them to return the goods as they are no longer any use to them? All help appreciated. Andy

  8. I installed an Iomega 250 Zip internal driver in computer having Win98se as OS. I then upgraded to XP. Zip still worked fine. Then I had to reformat due to a stupid error on my part doing a clean install. I was glad that happened because things ran even better...except for the Zip drive. Control panel recognizes the hardware but the yellow question mark indicated the software couldn't be found. XP couldn't locate it, the driver disk wasn't recognized, the Iomega site's driver selections weren't recognized, the Iomega help desk didn't come up with any solutions, nothing!! I like using the Zip driver and I use it for various backup such as Act2000 so I don't wa…

Having some thoughts and was just looking for some opinions. I have to admit that im not too keen on intels chips however, I am thinking of getting a new laptop and am looking for 64 bit AMD processor ones (for obvious reasons) and a centrino. I have a pc which i use for most of my stuff, its just for a few games and general bits and bobs. I like lightness but its not essential, and I like speed, again not essential. All good arguments for both. Which do we think would be best and why?

Whenever I've installed an NT-based OS, be it NT4, 2K, or XP, the installer always seems to want to load a massive number of drivers, most of which seem unrelated to the system I'm installing on. I mean, I counted 10 separate keyboard drivers once! Is there some way to speed up the install process by specifying which drivers are needed ahead of time?

I have had this problem for quite some time now.Sometimes I boot my computer and I am able to connect to the internet without any problems. Other times I connect, in other words, my DSL WinPoET dialer connects , but when I open my browser it will not find any web sites except the website for my local library. All other sites return the usual cannot find website message. It doesn't matter which browser I use IE, Netscape 7.1, Avant Browser, My IE2, or Mozilla Foxfire, nothing connects. I have updated my AV definitions and run a full system scan and it comes up clean. I have two spyware programs installed, Ad Aware and Spybot, I update and run these frequently, and they sho…

Hope one of you can help me. As you can see, I can get online to some sites via IE 6.0. I am running Windows XP Home and have already done a reinstall of IE 6, Outlook Express, and even XP. Still, same thing. Some sites come up without a problem (Yahoo), but if I navigate further into sites like Yahoo, it gives me a server error. I am running on a Comcast cable account, and they have verified that I am rec'g full bandwidth without any timeouts, so they're saying it's my browser. I've done everything I can think of. It's starting to become very annoying. Does anyone know why this happened, and how I can get rid of it? Will I have to wipe out my hard drive and reinstall my …

I've been trying to get FTP running from my webserver, but have come to a bit of a problem. The server appears to work fine, as I can connect to it and perform FTP operations both locally and on my LAN. The problem comes when I try to connect from outside. Outside clients can connect and authenticate, but when I try to get a listing or perform a transfer, it stalls. I run the server over my cable service, with the appropriate ports forwarded through my router (I've tried several ports). Anyone have an idea?

I just replaced my Geforce 3 video card with a Radeon 9600XT card. Before this my Geforce was able to put my Viewsonic GF775 monitor into powersave mode with not problem. However, my Radeon will put the monitor into standby mode only (screen displays "Check Signal Cable and the LED remains Green). I have all the latest drivers and ATI tech support is nonexistent. Does anyone have any suggestions. I am running a KVM switch with my spare computer containing my Geforce 3 and is able to put my monitor into powersave mode (screen blank and LED yellow). Thanks,

Hi I am looking at buying a new hard-drive for an old machine, but would want to move it to a brand new machine in about a year or so. I was thinking about buying a UDMA-100 drive, i assume this would work with an older computer that currently has an old hard-drive from about '97? I know it wouldnt run at UDMA-100, but doesnt it run at the max speed the motherboard would support (in this case probably UDMA-33). Can i at a later stage put this in a system with a new SATA drive? Or do i need to have the same type of drive in the entire system? Thanks.

So, the demo's out, what does everyone think? I've played around a bit (read: blew off hw for a weekend to play), and it looks to be a really diverse game. You've got your classic deathmatch, in either team or single, the Onslaught mode that is almost like BF1942 (with an Unreal feel, of course), Bombing Run, which I can only describe as 'football with guns', and a bunch of other modes. Definately getting this one.

Hi Again, I got a new PS and got everything powered up, but still having booting problems. First I cleared the CMOS. Then I turned on the system. The POST screen came up. Pressed F1 to continue, another screen came up and it asked if I wanted the Windows to boot normally or safe mode. I chose safe mode. After that it took a few seconds as if the something was going to happen but it reebooted, and I was back to the POST screen. Here now I could see a new line added ' CPU unworkable or has been changed. Please see CPU softMenu'. The Abit Bios has a softmenu to change CPU clock and other stuff. So I went into that and checked it out, I left everything at default (the way …

I'm hoping someone can help me on this one. I am wanting to utilize my PC sound system (Dolby 5.1 NVIDIA SoundStorm with Creative Surround Speakers) with my TV. Is there any way to do this. I have found several sites that tell me I can do the opposite. All I'm wanting to do it to be able to watch a movie in my DVD player that is hooked to my tv and the sound to come out of my PC speakers. Is this possible and if so, what do I need to purchase in order for it to work? Thanks in advance for any help Dixiebell
