Is it correct for me to say: Windows 2008 group policies will not be recongnized on a Windows XP client because these clients use adm files, not admx regardless of the forest / domain functional level. Can I have a Windows 2003 DC servicing XP clients (adm), and have a Windows 2008 DC servicing Vista (admx) clients within the same domain?

No error messages are generated that I can find, but it routinely tries to install KB929729 security update for ..NET 1.1 and SP1 for Office 2007 and fails each time. The OS is Vista Home Premium 32 bit. If more info is needed, let me know. This one has be puzzled. -- CrashGordon

The control panel cannot be accessed from the start menu, you cannot open display properties from right clicking on the desktop, you get no functionality in the security center, printers will not print. I was printing fine yesterday but when I came in this morning it was broke again. I restored to restore point of yesterday and all was working again. This is an issue with Vista. It is not machine specific. I know of others having the same problem. I checked the event viewer but did not notice any updates. Can anyone help with this?

We just had WinXP put in my husband's laptop computer (he had Win98), and I've set the power option for "Never" as far as hibernation, and yet it goes into hibernation anyhow when it's left alone for a few minutes. Also, I've set it for Windows Classic, and it reverts to WIndows Classic Modified.

I am running updated versions of "Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware" and "Spy Sweeper" on a Gateway GT5220 (Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 2; aka: XP Professional Version 5.1.2600, Service Pack 2, Build 2600). This is a 'home computer' which makes me "Computer Administrator" according to "User Accounts" in "Control Panel". I used information from: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272623 (which apparently does not apply to Windows XP - oops!) to experiment with adding 'commands' to the 'pop-up' menu one gets by right-clicking on a folder in Windows Explorer. I added two commands to "Folder Options/Edit File Type/Actions". …

Hi, I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 with default Polish languange. I wanted to check the new addition "Dreamscene" that showed up in my "updates" section but it doesn't work - it downloaded ok, it installed fine (and says that it's installed) but it doesn't work! In order to get it working I need to install the English MUI language pack. I checked it in the "Updates" section, downloaded it but can't install. No matter what I do it always stops during install displaying ERROR CODE 2. Nothing helps. I read that you need to install "KB942903" ti fix this, and so I did. It didn't change anything. Still the same error and I'm unable to install english mui. …

I want a second computer (which uses XP) to be able to connect to my internet connection. I have a Netgear wireless Router, and a security enabled wireless network. The other PC can connect to the wireless network, but cannot see the internet. In Vista's Network Sharing Centrethere is a properties box which deals with Internet Connection Sharing. But when I try to tick the 'Allow other users to connect through this computer's internet connection' box and click OK, I get a messagebox come upo telling me that 'An error occured while internet connection was being enabled'. Am I doing this in the right place? if so what else do I need to do to enable …

Stan honey, you know that you need to take your medicine. By the way your boss called. He said to bring back the bucket when you get to work. They have no place to store the mop when cleaning the floors. Your boss also said you could get a Hard Taco on your lunch break for free. Think outside the bun.

I just reinstalled Windows XP onto a PC of mine. When I first start it up, I go into Admin Tools -> Services and begin to turn on services such as NetBios Helper, DHCP, themes etc. so I can do basic things like run the internet, autoupdates, etc. However, whenever I restart the computer, none of the settings save and I have to redo these everytime. How do I get these settings to become permanent?

I have my monitor set to turn itself off after a period of time in Windows, but it sometimes wakes itself up without any external (mouse or keyboard) intervention. Is this a software (Windows) problem or hardware (monitor/cabling) problem? OS is XP Pro 32-bit with SP2. Thanks in advance.

No Windows 7 discussion group? Anyway, installing Home premium (received early in UK) I find that the DVD drive (D) isn't recognised in Windows Explorer albeit that DVD is recognised when loaded into DVD reader/writer. No problem was experienced using Windows 7 Ultimate RC1. So why problem now?

Question for you. I work in a High School. We have a mobile lab of 12 gateway laptops....we just set up a new AD enviornment. Here is my problem. The laptops on the cart are wirless. I have new students trying to log onto the laptops but cannot because they can not reach the domain, thus can not authenticat and build a profile. Is there a way in XP(SP2) to set the wirless card to be active all the time so that a new user that has never logged onto the laptop can access the domain? i have tried setting in Network connections but can not get anything to work. There are Broadcom wireless cards in the laptops Thanks JP

I installed the universal USB driver software mentioned here awhile ago, works great on 2 W98 machines, as my flash card functions normally. In a third machine there is a problem. The driver software above installed normally. I then plugged in the flash card, got the usual screen finding driver, everything normal as I saw on the other 2 machines. The flash card drive icon showed up in the System Tray. If I select it for Unlock, it shows as drive F, and names my particular flash card. But drive F does not show in windows Explorer. I tried rebooting, tried Safe Mode, don't see it. How to see that drive so I can use it? ms

At "http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm" I found listed "85. Set Detail View for all Folders Open/Save As", which takes me to "http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/fx3summ.html". There I can find a utility called "File-Ex" which costs ~$20 and which appears to provide the capability to do something I've looked for in the Windows XP forums and haven't found. What I'd like to do is have an application's Open File dialog default to the Detail View, be sorted by modification date in reverse order, and not have the "Size" and "Type of File" columns obstructing my view of the modify date. Have I overlooked a way of doing this which does not involve investing…

hi, is it possible to change profile path specified in AD user properties on the fly? I have many users who logon on public computers with their mandatory profile, but in some locations computers have different software installed, MS Office in this case version 2000 in one place and 2003 in another. I want that user profile will be changed by computer name on which user is logging on. I wrote a script which changes "CentralProfile" value in ProfileList key in registry and placed in users GPO startup script, but it seems that user profile specified in properties loads first than the script who changes path. Thanks in advance
